Plasti Dip emblems
 

So later this week when I get my badges in from Toyota, the plan is to head over to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up some red plasti dip and prep the emblems so I can take the old ones off and stick the new ones on all in one go.

Question is, which is better... spray on, or liquid? The spray on looks like it takes FOREVER to cure, and I have to do 4-6 coats, whereas the liquid looks like 2-3 dips and you're good to go. Anyone have any experience with this as far as prep work / use / satisfaction and which they prefer.

So I have some recent experience with the spray and lemme tell you, it's a bitch. If you go that route make sure the cans are warm and make sure you shake the shit outta them. Then keep shaking. Then shake some more. You cannot shake them enough. And when you spray, spray closer then you think. 4-6 inches.

For your purpose the dip seems better - if you had a larger surface to cover, I'd suggest an airbrush application. Rattle can paint in general sucks compared to professional style airbrush application; I can't imagine rattle can plasti-dip is any good.

That said, I'm biased - I know a guy who works for a paint distributor, so I have occasional access to their test lab, complete with $$$ spray guns and a booth...

use spray. its way easier, will come out more even, you wont get drip the hardens on one side and the cure time really isnt that bad. I plasti dipped my entire car for the winter and that only took 5 hours including the prep. I let it sit for a day but with emblems its not as important

I'd caution you against the red. The pigment bleeds from it into whatever you dip. It may also get in/on the paint of your car over time. Red is the only color I know of that does this with plasti dip.

I've rattle canned a few things with the black and it was easy just watch some YouTube videos and take your time. Make the last coat a little thick and it self levels and smooths.

Done a tone of Plasti-dip, always used rattle can and if you take your time it will come out great...

I think some colors are easier to spray then others. I had a hard time with coverage with the white

Will this still happen if I coat them before I put them on the car, or will it bleed even then?

One example I saw was a superman theme. The guy had like 6 non red layers of dip on before he added red stuff. When he removed it his white brz had a red S on the hood still.

I only plan on putting layers of red onto the emblems. Is there anything I can put over it as a final coat to seal it/keep it from bleeding?

Why not just paint and clear coat the emblems?

I didn't think of that. Figured paint and clear coat would be a bit more in depth, but didn't really look into it.

ive used the rattle cans a ton of times and loved the outcomes, but one thing you should watch out for is when you wash your car. I took mine to one of those self service washes and didnt realize in their pre-wash there is some type of goo-gone in it. the plasti-dip started to peel off.
