Another One of These: Totaled or Not? Heartbroken

I was driving on the highway on the way to work, and all of the sudden, my car started to slide into the left shoulder. I compensated and slid into the right lane and back into the left lane. Regained control for a few seconds and it started to slide again and then spun out into the guard rail. Winter Storm Hercules vs summer tires and the storm won.

My car is at the tow yard now and won't get appraised until tomorrow at the earliest. But I figured while I wait, I'll get a poll going to see what you guys think. Totaled or not? What do you think?

totaled, twas a mistake to have the stocks on.

willypongtb 01-02-2014 08:05 PM

wow that sad to see but most important you ok.

BRZNutt 01-02-2014 08:06 PM

Ouch, that sucks! I'm glad I had my winter tires on the way home tonight...hope everything works out for you.

BadMoon 01-02-2014 08:06 PM

Drove it for the second time today in those conditions and summer tires. Never again. I slid all over the road. Anything over 20 and I would go into a drift. And the fucktards behind me actually kept riding my bumper. I'm a bit ashamed of myself having tried to drive it again in these conditions. I was a danger to myself and everyone else on the road. So never again. Winter tires or no driving.

I'm glad you are okay.

Redlinedfrs86 01-02-2014 08:31 PM

Damn that sucks......glad you are ok

Wattage 01-02-2014 08:39 PM

Why did you not purchase winter tires?

MikeNYC 01-02-2014 08:42 PM

totaled but all that but at least your ok

Fett4Real 01-02-2014 08:47 PM

How fast were you going?

pche 01-02-2014 08:48 PM

Dude, it's a Subaru, it's made for the snow!!

J/k, that sucks man, glad you're ok. I'm the one who voted not totaled, I've seen worse gotten fixed. Doesn't look like the roof is buckle so it might not be. However, it's better off totaled because it'll never be the same.

xwd 01-02-2014 08:53 PM

Hard to say if it's totaled or not, would be right on the cusp. I'll say it's totaled based on the airbag going off.

But yeah, $500-600 for a decent set of tires is a small investment.

TylerLieberman 01-02-2014 08:56 PM

Im no expert but if I were to guess, id say totaled

I was going about 40mph straight on the highway, following the tire trail in front of me. I think i must've drove over a patch of snow or something and threw my car off balance.

I kept telling myself next week, one week after another, which is completely my fault. Driving in western NY: it's not a matter of it, it's a matter of when.

glorydays 01-02-2014 09:02 PM

damn im in nny on summers... kinda scary. send me your nav unit??

bestwheelbase 01-02-2014 09:04 PM

@TM glad you (and those around you) were not injured.

Hopefully others will learn from this. Even though they're not as pretty as fancy BBS wheels and high-performance rubber, a cheap set of steelies with winter tires is a worthy investment.

Turbo95eg6 01-02-2014 09:15 PM

Damn...

ntron1 01-02-2014 09:17 PM

Sorry to see. I chose to keep the summers on and spend $2,500 on a 1999 4X4 Blazer. I know some say it's ok in the snow with the right tires but frankly, I will run out of talent before the car does. She's safely parked under a blanket of snow at the moment.

Wattage 01-02-2014 09:23 PM

-Have winter tires

-Don't drive too fast

-take turns SLOWLY

-give yourself LOTS of following distance

-change lanes extremely slowly, so slow that it feels stupid

-Keep the car in as high a gear as possible to minimize torque

-Leave early if driving to work

-pay attention to weather reports

-use MINIMAL steeting inputs. MINIMAL

Follow these tips and you can drive this car in ice, snow... no problem.

Mad1723 01-02-2014 09:25 PM

Winter doesn't forgive in my part of the world and we learned to respect the wrath of mother nature. Glad you're alright, but running summer tires on a road with snow on it will never end well. Some may say: "It's fine, I've done it before". Well it only takes one time, doesn't it?

It's clearly totaled, hope your insurance covers you well @TM

White64Goat 01-02-2014 09:31 PM

My guess is it is total loss. This car is listed at an insurance auction and has less damage, so........................

Yeah man way too fast. But you know that. I again slid above 20. I don't even know how you got it up to 40? Glad you are okay and I will be buying my tires or I'm not driving any more.

I told my wife tonight if I took that same drive home in the same conditions 100 times I would no doubt wreck 35% of the time. That's rolling the dice. :eyebulge:

Just looking at the pictures, I know it's the kind of temperatures you need winter tires, no question about that. We have a law stating that if you don't get winter tires installed by the 15th of december, you get pulled over and fined a lot.

I don't think you guys need that, as your weather is nowhere near as bad as ours.

But some common sense about this is necessary.

Sorry about your car OP, but this could unfortunately have been easily avoided. 40MPH in such conditions is downright dangerous for you and others. Sorry about your loss, it's an expensive lesson to learn.:sigh:

iceman666 01-02-2014 11:41 PM

TM,

Condolences with respect to your BRZ. That said, I agree with the comments above, 40 MPH is way too fast in an RWD car without (and even with) snow tires given the conditions.

About 10 years ago in my S2000, I got stuck on the Palisades Parkway (south of Bear Mountain) for 6+ hours (stopped under an overpass) because I didn't realize it was going to snow. I was extremely (extremely) fortunate not to total my S2K. . . Slid off the road into a bush doing less than 10 MPH in one only places with no rocks / guard rails (did I mention I was extremely fortunate).

When I retired my Prelude and went to the BRZ (daily driver), I knew there would be certain days / weather conditions where I will be:

1. Required to drive less than 25 to 30 MPH on back roads (avoiding highways) to get home.

2. Grounded until snow stops / plows do their work.

Bottom line, accidents happen (snow or no snow), cars are can be replaced (you cannot be). Glad you're okay.

That said, when you get your replacement use a bit more caution during inclement weather.

dsgerbc 01-03-2014 12:39 AM

Good you're okay. I'd say it's totalled twice over.

Yeap. Do all of those when around other cars of hard objects. On winter tires. If no winter tires - leave the car at home in winter weather. RWD cars can spin out in a flash even on the best tires, if one isn't careful.

Heck, any car can spin on crap tires in an instant. Saw just that happen right in front of me. A truck (pretty sure it was a 4x4 nissan) changed lanes a bit to eagerly (asphalt in-lane, lines of snow between lanes), probably also quickly backed off the throttle, next thing he saw was a concrete divider.

Thank god he didn't bounce of it too much.

andalicious 01-03-2014 01:15 AM

Totaled... especially since you had an airbag deployed. But glad you are OK.

KayC 01-03-2014 03:22 AM

Glad you are okay, but it's really irresponsible of you to drive in those conditions with summers on. Not only are you endangering yourself, but also others drivers around you. Here in BC Canada, insurance won't even cover you if you are on summers during winter.

Lesson learned I guess.

akahenry 01-03-2014 04:01 AM

It's totaled but let this be a lesson to you (OP) to change tires accordingly, especially during the winter.

mjh712 01-03-2014 09:38 AM

Sucks. I took a turn doing under 10 mph & slid out when I hit a patch of compacted snow. I bought winter tires 2 days later. Today, I drove to work with the snow tires, got all sorts of funny looks, & was the first one to my office; & now everyone here is calling me crazy. (Now I know I can wait to come in later on days like today, 6+ inches) Spun the tires a few times, only accelerating from lights or turning with some snow on the road, but night & day vs. the HPs.

AznBRZer 01-03-2014 09:50 AM

With all of the threads about snow tires on this forum, I'm simply amazed that one doesn't take it to heart.

Glad you're safe OP and I hope everyone that's sitting on the fence about snow tires has learned their lesson here.

You drove over a patch of snow. NO WAY.

This is correct, but the most important factor is the tires. Even with minimum Torque and steering input, one of the rear wheel can slip, and loose traction. If it does at 40MPH and Snow on the road....you are doomed.

Sorry to hear Op. I hope you can salvage it, put a stroker engine in it with SC

brzr 01-03-2014 10:54 AM

if totaled, will you be getting another brz?
and winter tires ;)

This.

Knowing there are people like this on the road makes me really angry. You're taking chances with everyone's life not just your own.

Darkazn58 01-03-2014 05:04 PM

Okay this fucking scares the shit out of me. I'm buying my BRZ from Clint in Colorado and driving it back to SoCal around March or April. I just want to get out of snow country intact.

Fett4Real 01-03-2014 05:12 PM

March April we should be about clear of snow...its not antartica

chas3wba0 01-03-2014 05:15 PM

My condolences, dude... at least you walked away from it. On a brighter note, the car still looks mad sexy

It was still snowing in late May here last year and even into June just south of us. Hoping this year is not a repeat, but December is already way up for snowfall vs last year.

the new guy 01-03-2014 06:21 PM

My Asphalt FRS feels for its brethren BRZ, best of luck to you OP!
