Regrets on Automatic?
Hey guy's im new to the forum and just wanted to know if anyone else had an automatic and regret getting it? my last car was manual but I decided to go with automatic due to my daily commute to nyc. Just annoying that all my friends laugh at me for going with the automatic. First impressions I get on the outside "nice car" than when people see the inside "oh automatic...gay." its really annoying. maybe im just a sensitive guy haha.

Not one. I can shift when I want to and relax when I want.

Driving back from work today and experiencing snow for the first time in a RWD car, I have to say that I'm happy I can keep both hands on the wheel at all times!

Driving in lots of traffic Other people need to drive it Gets better gas mileage Or person has never driven stick. There was a compromise for me, based on other people and mpg. But since it shifts so quickly and rev matches, I'm pretty happy with it. The gearing is makes it accelerate slower from a start, but I've read 5 - 60mph there isn't a huge difference. But since I do autocross, I did buy (but not install yet) a 4.56 final drive, which should make it accelerate more like the manual. Do a search and you'll find lot of comments on the subject, mostly positive. |
Get new friends or stop being insecure about what other people think about your car.
|
Nope, i still love every second of my A/T.
Sure maybe in certain track day scenarios i'd like a stick or have launch control like those with Racerom with the M/T but i am happy with what i have. Does exactly what i want as a DD, i can still shift and have fun the way i want. |
They're immature, stuck in high school manual= faster which in turn = cooler.
If its good for you then who cares what others think, you're happy with it so stay happy dammit! |

FACT is a strong word any evidence/proof to back it up or was that actually just your opinion? People were saying same thing ten years ago... :) Back on topic, it makes ZERO difference to me what someone else has and I would not say anything negative nor feel one is necessarily better then the other as everyone has their own reasons for their choice is all. I have a manual atm.. |
Some older guy told me I had a nice car...then proceeded to tell me "too bad its an automatic".. I just laughed as he drove away in his GTR.
Haters always gonna hate. |
Don't feel bad! My patella are detached from an injury I got in the military, so having a manual DD is destroying my knees. Sometimes I envy you auto drivers :)
|
Tell your buddies that you all enjoy cars but the only difference is they use their left foot and you use the paddles on the steering wheel. On top of that you shift up and down much faster, more efficiently and with less effort than they do. And even further on top of that you can put it in the automatic mode when the spirit moves you and they still have to use their left foot.
|
I have a manual and to be honest after hearing how good the A/T's are with this car I kind of wish I had driven one before I bought mine. I too had that mentality that all sports cars must be manual, but sometimes I just want to relax and enjoy the ride instead of having my hands and feet busy most of the time.

depends on the day. I keep saying Im gunna get the MT in the 2015 model but I doubt it. regret?..no
|
Time to trade in for a MT so your friends can stop laughing at you.

I love my automatic. This car is smart, especially in Sport mode. It's more than happy to give you the RPM's you need to speed up, so it's not lacking in pep. Plus, with the paddles you can shift whenever you want. Also, when there are people on this site stating, "I've driven manual cars for 30+ years and I got the auto for this car because it's that good." I don't have any regrets for it. This car gets praised by manual people for it's auto. That's saying something.
And it's funny you say people look in and notice it's an auto, because I had some guys at an auto shop, car people, look in my car and get confused. One of them asked me, "Help me out, I see a manual shifter and two peddles? Did you put that surround on the shifter?" |
Only when i got to drive an RS7, the thing is not even a DCT and it shifts stupid fast. It made the auto feel slow.
Honestly, i'm going to own so many different cars that as long as it's a good transmission (Because there are shitty manuals out there, plenty), i don't really care. |
I don't think there's anything wrong with the A/T version. Now, if it weren't setup as well as it is, there might be issues, but from all accounts I've seen, it performs admirably.
Honestly, I was fairly tempted to go the A/T route. I decided to go with a M/T for several reasons: - I wanted to re-learn stick as I think it's a valuable skill to have - It's dumb, but I feel like there's a secret society of M/T drivers and I wanted to be in on it - I get too bored in traffic if I'm not having to shift (drove my previous car a couple days ago, A/T 2006 Maxima, almost fell asleep at the wheel during rush-hour traffic) - Because racecar - Lastly, it's a fairly effective theft-deterrent in the U.S. :bellyroll: :burnrubber: |
The automatic is very good, but there are enough differences between AT and MT transmission to make assumptions about the car and driver.
The manual is very direct feeling and rugged, but feels good none the less- you have to do more work shifting through short gear ratios; The AT is very smooth and viscous, holds torque well and feels precise on gear changes. |
Regrets on Automatic?
I got an AT because I want my wife to be able to comfortably drive the car in some of the crazier weather we can get in my area, and the smooth transmission/manual shift mode appeased my desires for MT to at least an adequate amount. Last thing I need is an at fault snow accident from a less experienced driver behind the wheel of my car.
It has treated me well enough for a few open track days and some Autocross events, but is exceptional for a daily driver. While I prefer manuals 90% of the time, this is one car where I feel more than content with the AT. There are still days when I regret it, but usually those feelings are short lived and the benefits for my current situation outweigh not having the MT. Maybe I'll consider trading it in for an MT in a few years, but I'm comfortable for now. EDIT: some mention not having Launch Control as a downside, and that is a good portion of what I would like. Everything else can be handled very well in the AT. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
If I was to buy a automatic I would of bought a Buick Regal GS Turbo. With the lack of power in the FRS I couldn't imagine driving a auto and resale value will suck cause most buy the car for the fun style of driving and banging the gears. But its whatever you prefer, your making the payment.

I have an automatic with 418rwhp that will beat all your friends cars....you can borrow it if you need to
|
Be careful...

I would not dismiss that statement too much. Look at Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. With dual clutch technology becoming more pervasive and lower in cost you are starting to see cars like the 370z replacing their traditional automatics with it. Even Ford for crying out loud! The traditional manual transmission car will eventually become the "slow" one. |
The automatics you named are big dollar. Try replacing one or rebuilding it. When Prostock NHRA go automatic let me know. LMAO
|
Haha. But tbh, if you're gonna get an car with MT then this would prob be one of those cars.
Can always trade it in for a manual when nex-gen comes out. But enjoy the convenience of the auto for now. Maybe there's someone out there who'd want to trade their manual for your AT anyway... |
LOL. If I got an auto it would be a Merk C63.

I feel you! this blizzard in ny is terrible

You can still drift it around and it's really fun with just a little snow on the ground. In clear conditions you can take a cloverleaf going 70mph and still not have traction control kick in, which I have never seen another consumer car capable of. The paddle shifters are really fun when going through roundabouts or cruising on the interstate. I'd have to say the biggest things that make me grateful I got auto were that I am a Taekwondo instructor and my legs are tired at the end of the day and getting stuck in rush hour isn't so bad when you're not on and off the clutch a thousand times. Don't let the Fast and Furious crowd get to you. The 86 is a great car in either form and this is a pretty advanced auto transmission and no four speed piece of archaic trash. |

Fast and furious crowd eh? Lol. I understand what you're saying. TBH tho, it's the turns that make the MT most fun, doing heel-toe and revmatching. If you're not into that stuff, then auto prob better.
But AT is slower than MT anyway by just a bit. Quote:

I had small regrets when I bought my a/t but then I realized; better mpg, easier for dd, no burnt clutch, sequential for M when I want it, paddles for the twisties, and a Lexus Transmission thats been proven quality. Only wish it came w/ launch control so I could launch.
|
IIRC, the better MPG for the A/T version is basically due to the assumptions of the manufacturers that M/T drivers will drive the car more aggressively.
I mean, I've got the M/T and am averaging 31-33 MPG when I'm driving normally and shifting sub 4kRPM. On a side note, I love all the hassle of the M/T. Even in traffic. It's fun rev matching, heel-toeing, and using all 4 limbs to drive. It's a game. I have a Infiniti G37S now and had an IS350 in A/T and even though they have paddles, it's not the same. My mind drifts and I end up just driving it like a non-paddled A/T. Gas/Brake... Plus, the M/T keeps my wife from ever driving the car :) |
Love my AT, even more so when i got Turbo. only gripe is that 3rd and 4th gear seem a BIT longer than the MT........and by bit i mean a MILE!!
