Off-center trunk?
After owning my car for just a little over a year I realized that the trunk is slightly off center (the left side gap is ever so slightly smaller than the right side gap).. I don't know if it came like this or if something happened (I have never been in an accident). Is this a flaw from the factory? I barely noticed it but when I stuck my pinky along the line where the trunk aligns with the body and compared the bottom left and bottom right and realized that my finger goes a little farther in on the bottom right side than the left.
I would take a picture but it is pretty hard to tell. |
It's not a Lexus...

Wasn't really my question.. I was wondering if it is a factory flaw or if somehow it shifted. |

FWIW, the fit and finish on my BRZ looks very good. But if I start examining panel gaps too closely, I'm bound to be disappointed. |

It's just how these cars are. However, there is an unofficial TSB for "non-flush" panels. I don't know what happened to it. |

Well, you can take it to your dealer, ask for an adjustment and see if they'll come through with it. It will REALLY DEPEND on your dealer and service advisor. Each dealer is independently owned and operate differently. |
This is nothing new really. I see minor flaws in just about every one I look at.
My whole trunk is off center, but it lines up with the rear glass. The glass is offset on the opening by at least 3/32 (2.3813mm). |

All doors and trunks can be adjusted and are done at the factory. It is amazing to watch a trained professional do it.

I bet your OCD goes off the charts whenever you stand behind your car or open your trunk.

I don't know what you are addicted to (your word), but you may consider backing down on the dose a bit .... :D Seriously, I'm not sure where you are looking ... but the trunk in my car looks pretty symmetrical. Have a nice holiday season! humfrz |

There is a gap on both sides of my trunk as well. Right side being bigger. I found out its the shock that's defective and ordered a new pair free of charge from Toyota!
|
You can adjust it by loosening the bracket and moving slightly up or down. I swapped trunks and mine is way off, like visable even if you arent looking for it. Lol
|
when i open my trunk, the gap gets wider...
|
I noticed a larger gap on the passenger side of my truck whenever I installed my Tom's Tails. I thought I was installing the light wrong, or that the screws weren't lined up properly, but after a while I just figured that that's just how it was. No biggie.

My front hood is the same way as your trunk (bigger gap on one side over the other),...generally this whole car as assembled is a price point car at the lower scale. There are abnormally bigger gaps everywhere some even, some maybe not, less price means less quality ,....most consumers don't even notice it unless its uneven. Park your car next to a BMW or Mercedes and check the fitment between body panels (it will be a lot tighter). It will open your eyes. You should bitch though if its uneven.

My trunk was off center and adjusted the trunk mounting brackets to center it.
|
Another aspect is stiffness. I suspect some of our cars' lightness comes at the expense of stiffness. So your car might have started off in better shape than it is now -- a year of driving might have introduced small twists in the body which show up in the gaps.
But try not to think about that! |

I have an uneven plane where the pass door meets the front quarter.

Is it difficult or prone to messing up? I'd like to fix it but don't want to risk getting it even more off center lol. |

It was a pain basically had to loosen all mounting bolts push shim etc until gap was even. Looks great but trunk does not latch as easily. If you can live with it I would not mess with it as mentioned. |
I'm guessing all the OCD people in here haven't noticed how the passenger-side mirror is different than the driver side lol
Stand directly in front of your car and look at both mirrors. |

I have OCD and it don't effect me.. I'm sure I can adjust it later.. 1 year on the 8 of this month. . I did forget to close it once at the store then once I hit a speed bump, it went up and closed kind of hard so I'm assuming that's what caused mine to be off center..

With off centre trunk, would it have risk of water/rain seeping through and getting inside the trunk?
