The fact that Toyota (Scion) has reintroduced an affordable FR-Sports car (front engine, rear wheel drive) back into its product lineup is so exciting! Everyone has been talking about it, dreaming about it, and hypothesizing about it for quite some time now… but last week, I actually had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new 2013 Scion FR-S.

As a member of the automotive media and an AE86 owner, it’s no secret that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to see the new FR-S up close on a couple different occasions, but this would be the very first time that I had any quality seat time with the car.

This being said, once I received the gracious e

I had the exact same thought.

Can someone photoshop the turtle drifting on the sign?

"Anyone who complains that the Scion FR-S doesn’t have enough power simply does not get it."

I like it.

I agree. The rear, in white, really does look like a storm troopers car!

great pics...

"The AC, fan and heater controls in the FR-S are very easy to use dials instead of more complicated pushbutton units found in other cars. I like that.
However, what I like even more is the fact that there’s a little pocket underneath the AC controls, with just enough room for an iPhone and/or iPod. Even better than that is the small rubber lip that sits at the edge of the pocket, which prevents your iPhone from sliding out onto the floor in the middle of a spirited driving session. AWESOME."

Good!

Agreed. I just wish it had a USB port inside the pocket. That way you could leave the cable plugged in but out of sight. I wonder if the unit has one on the back, might have to rig something up that way.

hey, either way it will work, right?

the simplicity of this car is something I LOVE!! so many cars these days lean so incredibly heavily on electronics...this car is a slice of old school in very attractive contemporary packaging. i started to entertain the thought of looking at a used 11'-'12 Mustang GT 5.0...but not even that car is as simple and well packaged as the FR-S. a lot faster, but probably not as fun and certainly not as efficient.

Haha! Yeah they were up in the mountains...so...

But the Iphone looks pimp in that cubby. I really hope there is a USB port inside the cubby.

A glowing review from a (former) hater. Considering how strongly he feels about the original AE86, it's impressive how much he likes this car. If the FT can sway "Mr. 86" it must be doing SOMETHING right. :)

tripjammer 04-26-2012 05:46 PM

I say if you even remotely like the "OLD" AE86, you will like the FR-S\BRZ.

csaba 04-26-2012 09:29 PM

yes that's a nice little detail. I noticed at New York car show

csaba 04-26-2012 09:32 PM

agree! simple is means less things to brake

I agree but when would you need to plug it in? It has bluetooth streaming audio and phone functions supposedly. The only time you would need it is for charging or hooking up an older MP3 player.

I just hope it has enough room for my larger Android phone.

I have a older iPod that I would just hook up and leave there for in car use. Not a big deal really since I'm sure I can wire around it.

Is RA62 the official Toyota code for the MT Trans?

You will also have to plug it in to use the Aha Radio features on the head unit.

Same. One of the main things I like is the fact that it doesn't have steering wheel controls. I think this car is like a tribute to those in my generation who loved Japanese sports cars from the 80's and 90's. Kind of like how Ford and GM have been making muscle cars based on those from the 60's.

I unno, but I didn't read the actual article until I saw your post. Was bewildered to myself thinking "really? Obviously a Celica variant from the A60 platform, where's he getting this transmission talk from?"

I haven't heard that before, so I can only assume that he is making it up...

Nice to read a review from a serious AE86 owner, and not just a shmoe journalist!

(no offense to shmoe journalists, I just have no idea what your automotive backgrounds are)
