Radio downgrade (I hate touchscreens)

Has anybody replaced their factory touchscreen / navigation head unit with a more basic non-touch model from a different Toyota / Subaru / Scion, or with one of the head units available on the base cars in other markets?

Edit: if nobody has done it, I will compile a list of the various head units and go from there.

Can't you go with the uber cheap (It's pretty good actually) standard Scion Pioneer headunit?

I saw one selling in the classifieds for about $130 a while ago.

Yes that's exactly what I mean. In addition to that Scion Pioneer model you showed, there may be other compatible models from other markets. I am wondering what, if any, special wiring changes are needed.

This is the one from the Impreza.

I have this unit in mine and will gladly trade for a touch screen factory unit. It's complete plug and play, no other harness or wiring needed.

Chimera 12-22-2013 12:12 PM

I don't think you will have trouble finding a standard radio owner that wants to trade. I have the standard, it does a great job, but if you want to trade I would also be willing to talk trade. I am in Atlanta.

Your in Nashville I could drive up to meet you

Thanks for posting! Do you know whether this unit is plug-n-play with the FRS and BRZ? Got a link to its specifications?

To those of you with the base Scion Pioneer, did you install it yourself or did it come with the car? I have already forgotten what first came in the FRS before Bespoke.

Not looking to trade just yet. For now I want to compile a list of OEM head units that are compatible with the FRS and BRZ and figure out if any of them require special wiring.

Chimera 12-22-2013 03:36 PM

The 13 base is the pioneer unit, I assume, (assume), it would be plug n play in a 14. Are you talking the 14 base touch or the 13 bespoke?

Muskokan 12-22-2013 03:55 PM

A simple single din unit would be around $100 new and be installed easily with a wiring harness and dash kit. Atleast this way you'll be upgrading the sound quality while down grading from a touch screen.

I'm talking in general, to find out which OEM options (including overseas markets) are plug-n-play or easily retrofitted into USDM FRS and BRZ - so that people like myself can know their options if they want to rid themselves of navigation and touchscreens.

Thanks @Muskokan but that's not the point of this thread. The goal here is to figure out what OEM head units work with little to no modifications, for people like myself who want to ditch the touchscreen navi in favor of a simpler experience which maintains OE aesthetics.

Hopefully folks from other parts of the world like @nzer and @Fizz and @Killerbee will help us compile the details of head units offered in other parts of the world so that we can have a thorough comparison and determine what options are compatible, cost effective, et al.

And maybe someone familiar with the rest of the Subaru lineup ( @HeubergerMotors or a friend?) can help us look at wiring diagrams to determine what the simpler units need compared to the nav rigs.

In Switzerland (and as far as I know western EU) you only get it with the so called "Toyota Touch n Go" Touchscreen Radio. It is prewired and ready for Sat Nav, however if you want to use the Sat Nav, you have to buy the "unlock chip" from the dealer. But the head unit remains the same, even if you do not unlock the Sat Nav feature.
I have not found any information on who is the manufacturer of the radio, as it is not labeled and always just refered as a toyota head unit (however I'm pretty sure its manufactured from some other company)

Anyways, have not found a good picture of it, best I have is attached, if you need better let me know, I can take some tomorrow. Also found an ebay auction listing the same unit and giving some info on what cars it does fit

crash.1340 12-22-2013 08:31 PM

Once I get my 14 BRZ, the first thing I'm going to do is install the Alpine CDA-9886 I have sitting here already totally wired up and in a dash kit. It was a free unit, and they sound amazing so why not? I don't hate touch screens, I just hate the factory Subaru Navi. OEM touch screen units are usually junk anyway.

bestwheelbase 12-22-2013 10:39 PM

@Killerbee great info, thanks! Now I know to avoid the "Touch n Go" unit.

@crash.1340 you can create a different thread for that project, I'm sure others might be interested, but it's the polar opposite of what this thread is focused on.

Damn I forgot what its even like to listen to music when I drive, been using another car the past month driving in silence lol.

While I wish the screens were more responsive like a good phone or tablet, I wouldn't spend money to get rid of mine for a standard unit.

Different strokes for different folks.
