50,000 mile check in.

So this happened a couple days ago. I've done some other mileage check-ins, and I think at my 25k check in someone in an FRS was at...29 or 30K, so I don't think I'm the highest mileage car in the country currently, but I think I'm the highest on the boards.

The last 25K miles have seen some auto-xing, and a lot of driving around the midwest for work. The car is still a great "Mini-GT" as I like to call it. Earplugs are my only addition for long rides. I've had no issues, and I am following the 5k oil change, 2.5k oil filter change suggestion I read about on the boards. I'm coming up on a trans/dif change and I used Motul for my last two changes and really liked it. I've used Mobil for my last two engine oil changes, and always use the OEM filter.

This is my second winter and there are some chips that I put a coat of wax on, but didn't get around to filling in. I'll have those painted by my body shop in the spring with whatever other chips happen over this winter. I'm going to add some rally armor mudflaps next week, and I run the OEM rims with winter tires while in winter mode.

I'm still averaging about 29-30 mpg depending on the month which is a mixed city/hwy of 20/80. I run Mobil 93 almost exclusively but have had to use 91, and other 93 brands when traveling, but not too often. I'm 10K away from the suggested spark plug change...should be fun.

If you guys and girls have any questions please let me know!

Did you observe the break in period? How was it driven the first 1000 miles?

I did observe the 1000 mile break in as per Subaru's suggestion.

Do you still have crickets under your hood :D ?

I've had a mild case of the crickets the whole time. By the time there was really a resolution I could take to the dealership I was out of my warranty. :bellyroll:

I did try to get my GPS antenna replaced at 42K, but they said I was out of warranty. I tried to argue that the antenna was being replaced as a faulty design and it would be bad regardless of mileage but the dealership didn't bite and said a TSB wasn't enough to warrant a replacement.

The GPS is my only real complaint about the car. It's ok, and I use is a LOT, but it's kind of clunky and seem's like it's being run by a 386 processor with the turbo button turned off. That and the fact that 3 minutes after starting it I lose signal for 5 minutes almost every time.

suaveflooder 12-19-2013 04:24 PM

What was the purchase/delivery date?

Kelbyat07 12-19-2013 04:39 PM

Averaging 29-30 not bad at all. I am actually going to go get my oil change at 15,000 miles.

ZionsWrath 12-19-2013 04:44 PM

Post where and how much for spark plugs.

2013GTRNate 12-19-2013 04:46 PM

Thank you for the update!

It is very encouraging to read great reviews such as yours, as it only reinforces that I made a great decision picking this car.

I'm going for the opposite record - least mileage. I'm only at 5,100 miles, a mere tenth of what you've driven. I got my car in June - of 2012! I should probably get the GPS antenna taken care of - I never use it so it never has issues, but the two times I did use it, it would lose signal easily.

Plugs are due at 60k? Sounds early. I guess I never read the maintenance schedule. Heck - according to my dealer, I shouldn't even have changed my oil yet! :p

Nice job on the 50k mile odo shot.

I picked mine up on May 24th, 2012. It was the first or one of the first in the state, probably one of the first 50 delivered in the US (Just a guess).

I'll be doing it in my garage, so it will just cost parts + my time. :)

make a thread of DIY when you do that.

infinite012 12-19-2013 07:56 PM

Your HPFP (crickets) should be covered under the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty.

Hopefully it won't require an engine-out!

Surprised that they need to be changed every 60K (was assuming 100K like lots of cars these days).

pche 12-19-2013 09:58 PM

You guys drive a lot. I'm at 6700, bought in April of 2013. Already managed to spend over 4k in mods lol.

Good luck with the plugs, looks like a tight fit.

whataboutbob 12-20-2013 01:08 AM

Nice! Just shy of 46K right now.

Because it takes 2 minutes to do. I don't have any proof that it does anything, but I figure a fresh filter every 2500 miles can't hurt anything, and they aren't super expensive. I read that a lot of turbo subaru guys do it, and I just adopted the practice when I got this car.

Awesome!!! I had a 100m round trip commute and drove the Midwest for work once a month or so. What got you up here so quickly?

Yes.

mp22 12-20-2013 03:22 PM

How often do you change your air filter then?

Where do you get OEM Subaru oil filters from? For some reason I remember having trouble finding them but you've clearly done quite a few changes - do you get them online?

Superhatch 12-20-2013 03:26 PM

I usually buy them from my local dealer, but if I'm on the road and I'm near my 2500 change I just pop into whatever the closest dealership is on my drive and pick up a filter. A lot of the middle of nowhere dealerships are great to stop at because they don't get too many BRZ's on the lot and someone always ends up talking to me about it. :)

I have a Perrin air filter which I clean out during my 5k oil changes.

16+ months of 80miles/day minimum and lots of road trips/meets up in LA. I live in N SD county.

hellyvin 12-21-2013 12:02 AM

To replace the oil filter only,iIs there anything else you have to replace, like a gasket or something? Or is it just as simple as twist old one off and twist new one in.

I haven't done any maintenance yet since I'm covered under a maintenance plan but the 7,500 interval I get them at sounds a bit much.

June 1 for me - you beat me by a week. ;). But I won't hit 50k for another 13 years!

May 30th 2012 here. Had been on the lot for 2 days in Escondido CA.

Hah...nice. Were you the first one to pick one up from that dealer?

I thought about keeping my civic as a daily, but couldn't bring myself to drive this in the snow for an extended period of time:

Old one spins off, new one spins on. Can't explain that! :D

My dealer was allocated 6 cars - I was #1 on the list, however they somehow got a shipment of 3 cars on June 1st! One guy had come to pick his up already. I waited till after work. Third car was still there when I left.

Great looking Civic - did you hang on to it?

I work from home 3 days a week, commute in 2 days, and own 3 cars. My work is 10 miles away, local shopping is within 3-4 miles. My BRZ will sometimes sit for a week+. I bring my beater to the shopping malls due to door dings, so again, the BRZ stays in the garage.

Marcoscrdo 12-22-2013 10:29 PM

Damn time flys!

Superhatch 12-23-2013 12:43 AM

I didn't keep the Civic, but I would only sell it to someone who was going to garage it in the winter and keep it stock. He actually didn't buy it with the rims so I took some money off it but when he showed up he had his own set of HX wheels. :)

They're called spin on for a reason :p. Just be sure to coat the o-ring on the new filter with some fresh oil.
