"Dude. You should have bought..."

"Dude. You should have bought..."

Fill in the blank. :-)

It seems that for each person who has done their reading and loves the Twins, there is someone who just has to try to make you second-guess your decision. I live in Northwestern Washington where almost everyone drives a Subaru (plastered with bumper stickers) so the one I get most often is: "Why didn't you get the Subaru". But I've also had other imported models thrown out there as well, depending on what their preferences are. Just wondering if anyone else got the same unasked-for-advice after purchasing their car...

onefitz 12-16-2013 10:02 PM

A V6 Mustang.

Wolfking 12-16-2013 10:16 PM

Wisdom often comes with age... My friends know better than to make such a statement. If anyone else feels the need to go down that path, they'd likely hear "title your choice in my name or go f..." Well you know the rest!

drewbot 12-16-2013 10:21 PM

People who know about the twins: "Should have bought the Subaru (BRZ)"

Others, by way of rank:

1. "Should have bought a 370Z."
2. "Should have bought a WRX."
3. "Should have bought a Genesis Coupe".

kALMIGHTY 12-16-2013 10:26 PM

I got a "Should have bought a Corolla. More practical."
What?

Kiske 12-16-2013 11:11 PM

This one really bothered me a while back after a light 1/2" snowfall. Lunch break, pull into a BK and guy a few cars down shouts out "Hey, is that AWD?" I quickly replied "Nope!" before he had a chance to make this a conversation. The then replies with "You should have bought an evo." I didn't even bother to turn look back at him.

Idiots.

Darkrune 12-16-2013 11:16 PM

Evo's are nice man, but this car makes me smile just going to the grocery store. Lol, I always felt like the Evo drove itself :/ Plus the legs forward driving of the BRZ makes it super easy to predict where the curbs are :D

P.S I get, "You should have bought the turbo version". wtf

Kiske 12-16-2013 11:32 PM

I'm well aware of the Evo X and past gens. It just pisses me off that the comment is absurd in likeness he was drawing of the 2 cars.

The only way to make it more opaque would be had I been driving a customer's '69 Camaro and he asked the same questions. 2 completely different cars/markets.

Kelbyat07 12-16-2013 11:33 PM

350z or Genesis coupe. Should of got a Ralliart for practical reasons but I am still happy with my FRS.

suaveflooder 12-16-2013 11:34 PM

A mustang. I've owned mustangs my whole life and hang out with pretty much all mustang owners, lol.

Bad Habits 12-16-2013 11:49 PM

Genesis Coupe. Four times in the last month to be exact. WRX twice. Camaro once. 3 series once. Seems to be the more FRS/BRZ I have seen pop up in the area the more haters. And its always directed toward the hp numbers.

"WTF, the gen coupe has like 350 hp" another guy "damn, so its like 180hp? you do know the gen coupe has like 340 hp right?" another guy "thats the frs huh? no its the brz, they are similar with slight differences. oh yeah, looks like a 16 year old girls first car. you do know about the genesis 2 door right?"

I then inform them Ive got something at home in the 545 hp range if they would like to line up just let me know where. The more I drive the BRZ the more I enjoy it. That's enough for me.

Regalo 12-17-2013 12:20 AM

lol, I never had many try to change my mind, but those who did told me to get a Gen Coupe, V6 Mustang, and 370z. I had one friend tell me I should've bought a prius lol. In the end, once the dealer gave me the keys, I never looked back.

glorydays 12-17-2013 12:30 AM

almost always an EVO. if not then any awd vehicle. the north country is pretty rough.

Well, I don't get out much around "car people" but when my friends ask me "Why didn't you just keep your Miata?"

I just say "look in my back seat" .....:) (granddaughters)

I really hate when people try and compare the car to something like a EVO or a WRX, its seriously like comparing liquor and beer. One is for some serious driving, and the other one is for everyday fun.

Turkish 12-17-2013 01:49 AM

I got the gen coupe once, camaro/mustang a few times, I usually replied with, "I'll buy a boat when I go to the lake tyvm."

Another time I was asked, "Isn't that care slow? It doesn't have much hp for a sports car." My response was more or less along the lines of, "Well, I turned South onto Mopac off Parmer ln at 60 mph, that mustang gt that was keeping up before turned into a spec in my review though."

I always get these looks of awe struck revelation / mind blown / picking jaw up from off the floor. When I was shopping this car, I was also looking at the WRX. After test driving both, I knew I would enjoy both. The deciding factor was I knew I would not look back in regret with the 86, but I wasn't sure about that if I went with the WRX. Still haven't looked back.

I don't agree with this. Unless you are saying the BRZ is for serious driving and the EVO/WRX is for fun. Honestly, the EVO is not very fun to drive. I had more fun driving a MS3.

ZionsWrath 12-17-2013 02:04 AM

I got a "that's what I paid for my charger"

You should take it as a complement when people do that. Because you know what they really want to say is " I wish I waited and got an FRS/BRZ instead of ____" lol

And to be honest if I wanted to be smart I would have got a AWD car because I live in VT. But its a fun sports car and I am about style more than numbers or sensibility haha. So I have a FRS and a 04 4door accord for the winter. Trust me people are jealous that our car's look so sexy and they were not willing to sacrifice with a winter car or other things to buy one.
When people ask me why I did not go with the Subaru I simply say it was a style difference. I don't care about any of the added perks of electric start or better stereo they just bring the cost up. It all came down to the bumper for me lol. I was torn though because I love the Subaru blue lol. But the old 3rd Supra I had was pearl white so it was an easy choice once I thought about that.

I will never second guess my purchase of this car. People will argue with you no matter what you do. So just do what makes you happy.

Im saying that the WRX/EVO is like liquor while the FRS/BRZ are like beer. Beer is something you can drink everyday casually, and still have a great time for a great price just like the FRS/BRZ. Liquor is something you NORMALLY drink if you want to get hammered quickly and have a quick thrill, but for a price. Just like the EVO/WRX.

Of course there are going to be people who think the EVO/WRX and the FRS/BRZ are both inexpensive, but for a 20 year old they're both great cars to have

Any 20yo kid who can buy a 20k+ car is lucky as hell. I was driving a $3500 Eagle Talon at your age. I drove that thing to death too.

There was no luck at all. When I was 18 I worked my ass off to pay for a $2000 Integra that could barely make it to work and back. 2 years later I've been working my ass off and building my credit to the point where I could finally afford basically any sub $40k car. Started from the bottom now we're here. :party0030:

I really love when people ask me how much parents spent on this car, because I shit on them when I tell them I got it on my own.

Who even says that? Only place I've seen shit like that is the internet. And no one does that unless you go advertising your age inviting trolls.

Stop making us younger ones look like idiots. If you're proud of yourself, you shouldn't have to explain your shit to anyone. And by the way, I don't care how many fucks you give about this post.

Apparently you care enough to post something and waste your own time trying to make me look bad.

When somebody says you're "lucky" when I know I worked my ass off, I tell them otherwise. It's like thanking jesus after a surgery that a surgeon has been working on for 5-10 hours. Its nonsense. If you truly don't care then don't respond to this post.

About what?

mfbmike 12-17-2013 05:15 AM

I had a lot of people insist I should've gotten a Golf R or something Audi after my VW R32.

I realize, most people try to "project" themselves onto you and want you to drive the car they want you to drive, if that makes any sense, rather than being completely happy for the choice YOU made for YOURSELF. I suppose in some ways I suppose most of those people would've loved to have seen how I mod a golf R considering how much I modded my R32 and documented said mods.

It also extends to the way you mod your car for example. It's not uncommon to have friends insisting I lower it, bag it, i.e. mod it in a way completely opposite to how I am doing so (I've got meaty tires and only ~1.5" drop and build my car to drive the piss out of it).

asphaltkyle 12-17-2013 05:23 AM

First he rants about how hard he's worked and now he implies that Jesus doesn't do magical things...

Let's get him, boys.

Quatters 12-17-2013 05:36 AM

E36 M3. It was tempting but I needed something super reliable yet still fun because I need to drive for work. Most people are excited for me getting it

Tapatalkin on the Quattbus.

TheLaughingMan 12-17-2013 05:43 AM

Hm, around here all the Evos are like $10k more than the FR-S...so that was definitely a contributing factor in me NOT getting that car (even if I could have benefited from the AWD in Colorado). I don't think I've had anyone explicitly tell me what I should have done; I think most of the people I associate with assume that I know what's best for me.

lol, my friend insists he wants to drive an audi. Querying him he has no logical reasoning behind it and doesn't even know which one he wants (though I'd presume it would be the cheapest new one he could get).

There must be something he has seen, experienced, or thought that makes Audi some godly brand to him. No matter what I say he won't tell me what it is that makes him want one.

The sad thing is he can't afford a "good" one. And he is going to end up in the cheapest (new) audi he can get, even if it stretches his budget.

I hope it works out for him :(

If you're getting something non-quattro, there really is no point to getting one imo.

If I was going Audi, it would be an older B5 S4 (yum) or a TTRS. TTRS might be slightly out of my comfortable price range at this point in my life though. A5's are nice but again, if you're going to be staying FWD, what's the point in spending that kind of money?

FAIL

You guys are no better that those "Dude, you should have bought a ..."-guys, just the same as the BMW fans.

Just look at your all the negative fanboy responses in the other thread of that member that traded in his "cheap" FR-S for a much "better" IS 350.

Very sad for so-called car enthusiasts.

Demandred7 12-17-2013 01:54 PM

Dude. You should have brought a manual FR-S. Every time I talk about my car when people find out it is an automatic, they say I should have got the stick or it absolutely kills the conversation. The auto suits my needs and had the AT sucked, I would have forced myself to learn manual. Thank God they didn't put a CVT in the car. Despite the slower 0-60 time for the AT FR-S, it is one of the best AT's for its price point and I don't regret my choice at all.

I think its because sports cars are more fun driving manual. But if you don't know how to, then that point is moot. Just enjoy the car. :)

This x100. Like have any conversation about cars, "Dude you drive an auto your opinion does not count."

Sure if I had it my way I would get a manual, but I live with my family and I can't have a car only I can drive.
