Who else has pre-ordered a coin?
So I've always had a bunch of debit/credit cards and it's always annoying having my wallet feel stuffed then coin came about. What do you guys think?
You can also get 50% off so they are actually not that expensive here's a link. https://onlycoin.com/?referral=1QrtczI5 |
Looks pretty cool. Will have to investigate some more. Thanks never heard of it
|
Cool but I only have 3 cards lol.
|
Pretty Cool; I too never heard of it before. Sure wish it was released already verses Pre Order. Never saw anything about 50% off though
|
Well pre-order price is $50 and the released price is $100. So I guess that's the 50% off
|
Only a handful of things bug me. They expect a 2 year lifespan out of a non-replaceable battery from a heavy user, but using it less doesn't really extend the battery life that much. Non-replaceable batteries are typically a non-issue, but it is not rechargeable either, meaning I may wait for a rechargeable option. Finally, if the device's battery dies, the manufacturer won't do anything to help you - you have to pay for a new one. Not even a discount for battery failure (where they take the old one, wipe the data, and refurbish it).
I'll wait for an upgraded version. |

Yeah they are 100 bucks but 50 if you preorder. I ordered it, it's only 50 bucks so we'll see..I'm pretty excited lol |
Lol I saw this on Youtube last week, please inform us how cool it is when you get it. The only question I have is how do you put money in it if you added a debit card to the coin? Will the atm machine know which card is the right card or ????

I think I'll wait until it's proven safe and reliable. Not a big fan of putting all my eggs in one basket
|
I just use google wallet on my phone.
|
That's pretty neat. It's cool that it stores the information on your phone by account rather than by device, as I change roms on my GS4 about every other week.
I'll check out what the other articles on sites like Engadget have to say about it. Might put in my preorder when I get home. |
Just my opinion, but this is something I am really not looking forward too. My main concern is that anyone can just scan your card in to their "coin" and have all your info. I know that these types of things already exist, but it still makes me feel a bit uneasy. Of course, I don't know everything about this product and could be wrong, but I do think the rate of credit/debit card theft will go up.
An easy countermeasure would be to have the "coin" send a message to the credit card company or bank when you add a card. The company/bank could then send a confirmation letter to the user that the user has to accept or the card will be canceled. P.S. I'm not trying to rip on the device. I actually think it's a cool idea. I just hope security was their #1 priority with a device like this. |
the geek in me is interested but the penny pincher in me would deal with my two cards if someone (in this case me) would pay me $50. plus new cards are free and this is not.
that being said, every single one of the people point out a downside are outside of its large target market. people with enough cards to need one of these things are not likely to make financial decisions based on logic or long term effects. its new and shiny so they will buy it. also the faq is pretty neat with that little kung fu thing slipped in. |
I would like to share a project I made in college in 2007, six years ago, that my professor gave us a C on....

I would probably get one if it didn't have a non-removable non-chargeable battery. |

My roommate pre-ordered a coin. I think the entire POS (Point of Sale) Industry in general needs reform (paperless, faster payment processing, RFID or other, simple touch software UI). |

Yeah, this sealed the fate of Coin with me. A product I'd like, but nothing good enough to overlook the company that's selling it. |
So, uggm, basically $50 a year (because you have to buy one every two years) to put all your information on a device that the company won't even stand behind in any meaningful way?
No thanks. Then again, I only carry two debit cards and no credit cards so definitely not worth it to me. |
So other then what everyone else said about security, re-purchasing a new one every two year, etc my major concern is the way you select your cards and how secure that is. I have a company account that has an extremely high limit that i use on everything from plane tickets to client meals. If i take a set of clients out and say the bill is $600, which is extremely possible, what happens when the waiter/waitress accidentally clicks that button and charges it my personal account? And what if don't have that extra cash to cover it? I dunno, that alone bothers me almost as much as all the security issues.

Plus around here too many cashiers will be confused by it. Not using till the businesses are familiar with it. |
I'm really not interested in having one of these to handle finances, but I would probably pay a small amount for something that keeps all of the goddamn rewards card info on it. I swear I have an inch thick pile of those shits that stay OUT of my wallet. Fuck you no I don't want my spine to start growing out through my kidney so I can save 25 cents this week on beans!
Yes, I know, I can just give a lot of places my phone number now and they put that in, but that's so much effort to speak ten numbers... :D |
Not to mention a lot of places are starting to do digital rewards cards that are saved into various card programs on smart phones. Between the iPhone Passbook and Google's... uhh, thing, there's really no reason to get one besides unifying your credit cards. Which, frankly, I don't care about doing.
|
I will wait to see if a proper security assessment of this system is done.
Oh and just had too :bellyroll: Quote:
