That was me experiencing massive wheelshake.

What tires are on the white car? Most street tires actually grip worse if you do a burnout. Generally the best thing you can do is drive around the water box, and just give them a really quick spin to scrub off any crap.

And 14.5 isn't anything to be proud of... Sorry...

mit_peid 12-11-2013 05:57 PM

Interesting, according to the website below, the stock FRS/BRZ is capable of hitting 14.6 sec. I doubt mine is that quick though (nor would I be able to get close given my amateurish launch abilities)

I'm running Nitto 555. They actually hook better when they're warmed up :burnrubber:

stock 86 cars in this part of the world run 15.1-15.6 on pump gas.

oh yeah, whats the fastest NA pump gas 86? always wondered. Coz we dont have E85 so we benchmark pg

Stock and modified 86 cars run the same here in the USA. The quickest NA pump gas 86 I've ever seen to date ran 14.56 :) The lowest I've seen so far is 14.47 but that was on e85. Most struggle to break into the 14's without FI and even then, high 13's is the norm.

As easy as most drag strip newbies think it is, laying down a good 1/4 mile pass isn't that easy. I'm reminded of a time when I met a guy with a 300+ whp turbo Scion TC at the strip and he was running high 14's all day. My boosted AT XB only made ~240whp but ran low 14's all day, every day with 14.1 @98mph as it's best.

yeah... the 1/4 isn't an easy thing as many can imagine, specially when running on a track that has glue on (Track bite). It's very tricky to run street tires on those tracks without trial and error.

I guess with softer compound tires, i might be able to shave a bit of my time ;)

Many things look easy until you try them. ;)

In your case softer compound tires and a higher rpm clutch drop should help. Since I have an auto I need a shorter FD gear ratio and/or higher stall tq converter.

Not that I know of but I'm more interested in 4.56 FD gears since it's a DD.

Not to bash or disrespect or anything, but here in Puerto Rico a frind of mine ran 14.7 1/4 mile on a completly stock FRS. I just wished or hoped it would be faster with all those mods........................ guess n/a isnt an option for the FRS :(

zooki 12-12-2013 11:05 AM

I just ran my car last night. Finally managed to break into the 14's. 14.97@97.6mph. It was 45 deg F out, so it helped the MPH, but hurt the traction. My car is standard, stock except for a drop in filter and Nameless axle back. Did get to see a Nissan GT-R run a 10.57@142... Scary fast considering he drove it there.

There actually is a company that has a thread on these forums. Higher stall TQ converter, Transmission cooler, other goodies.

Grip Ronin 12-13-2013 11:22 AM

nice. what was your launch rpm?

diss7 12-13-2013 05:29 PM

You don't want to dump the clutch, ever. You want to slip the clutch and slingshot launch. You're only dumping the clutch when the car makes enough power than it needs a brass clutch and you can't slip it. Your time is pretty much determined at the launch. These aren't drag cars, they're street cars.

The other thing I see new people doing at drag strips is shirtig too slow. You should be shifting so fast that you only just raise your foot off the gas, say to 50%.

I had a version 6 sti a few years back, kept it bone stock and demonstrated these techniques in some videos. I have them somewhere on photo bucket or whatever social media was popular at the time.

The launch in particular, dumping the clutch at low revs would bog, too high revs or letting the clutch off too fast would spin all four wheels. Would get mid 13s. Get the lianch perfect and it would do 13 flat. Even got a couple of 12s.

FWIW 14.5 is fucking decent. I had a type R integra that would only do that. I also had a stock s15 silvia that would only do 14.2. But spent $3k on it and it was doing 12.7.

Just a click before 5k:thumbsup:

Bahraini86 12-13-2013 07:08 PM

I agree. However, slipping isn't something you learn in a day or so. I'm trying to work it out on my launches. At least, I preload the clutch on my runs by lifting the clutch gradually till the car tends to move. I try to keep some clutch pressed during the initial movement of the vehicle. Somehow, I still get the tendency to let go early. Getting there hopefully;)
