Swp rust during winter

1 Attachment(s)
Soo washed my car for the first time since we started getting snow, bit over a month. Just did one of the esso touch less ones(worked pretty good).

Aaaand pretty sure I know the meaning of the rail dust I've been hearing about..

But it's EVERYWHERE, and noticeable.

Is this a normal amount? Does it hurt to leave it?
I waxed my car a couple times leading up to winter..
I guess I'm just surprised at how fast it came up, month ago before I got winter crap covering it it was spotless.

Thanks in advance ft86club, love y'all.

If it doesn't come out with iron-x let us know

Thanks Zion, still not helping my cause on what other people experience during the WINTER months and this paint.

Muskokan 12-11-2013 01:35 PM

Wondering if I should just leave it if it's gunna keep coming back every month

I would take it back to the dealership. They're all aware of rail dust/rust but it appears none of them do any thing about it until the customer complains. It happens to all cars that travel by rail but only is noticeable on white cars. The dealership has a mild acidic wash that is not harmful to the finish or any trim that will take it off. I would put it in their lap.

I read that this is caused by the "pearl" in the paint which is actually metals that will continue to rust.. Or is it from being transported by train and should be a one off thing once it's dealt with?

Clay bar = 10$ fix.

smbstyle 12-11-2013 02:41 PM

do you park the car next to or near active train tracks?

you can still get rail dust on the car after delivery... looks very much like the rail dust, or some other metal flakes that are sticking to your car and rusting in the wet weather.

I actually had my race pads do this on the passenger side door after a wet day at the track.

What? Where did you hear that? Yeah, that's not true.

This. The fact that it's also on a plastic bumper tells it's just metal specks the surface.

Read post #10. In 1996 I bought a new white (non-pearl) Grand Am. After it had been exposes to weather it started showing spots. Not knowing what was going on I went back to the dealership. Their response: "Oh yeah, that's rail rust." I probably wasn't there for an hour and they were finished wiping/washing it down and the rust never returned.

:word: IronX, wash, then reapply wax (preferably sealant before the wax, and you should be good from now on.

Nope my white FR-S doesn't look like that.

As mentioned, if you can find a warm place, I'd do the IronX and claybar things followed by a coat of good wax.

Appricciate the responses guys, put my mind at ease.
Going to try and find a nice garage for a few hours to use that wash and clay bar, as it's probably not a good idea to give it to the dealer to wash, with all the salt and crap I'm just terrified they'll rub it in and destroy the finish lol

Visxco 12-13-2013 11:11 PM

Use a clay bar, I used to get this on my lancer all the time.

Burrcold 12-13-2013 11:42 PM

Depending on where you drive the most, it will come back. I've just made doing an iron-x bath as part of my annual detailers duty. I.e. I work in an industrial area that exposes my SWP to more iron deposits.

No big deal, but just don't let them sit for TOO long and definitely don't try to rub them off.
