Ice on top of snow. Drove around the neighborhood at 15mph and nope. Never going to drive it again in this weather.

LOL it was shorts and flip flop weather here today and it was in the 80s all week. Florida ftw.

Areddi 12-08-2013 06:12 PM

Just need the right tires. Took mine out today and with the winters on it can handle anything (unless ground clearance was an issue obviously)

Seeing all this snow makes me really miss living in Utah. :(

This was the only snow my car saw before I stuck it into the garage.

Didn't get much snow but everything is covered in 1/2-3/4" of ice, should make for a nice commute to work in the morning..

Just put the winter tires on Saturday. Drove around Baltimore to run some errands today, worked like a champ. Starting uphill in 1st with zero slippage, could stop and turn easily, traction control never once kicked in. This was in some shitty slush and a few inches of snow. Also have a 70lb bag of sand in the trunk to help out (this is my DD). No problems.

We tend to get snow infrequently in the area, probably a handful of times during the year.

What are the decision factors that warrant getting winter tires? I guess I'm unsure how to access whether I need winter tires or not as my BRZ is my daily.

Not really answering your question, but you could also look into using an all-season tire. Obviously not as good in the snow as a winter tire or as sticky as a summer tire (in the summer of course), but there are some out there that perform really well year-round for our climate. Just another thing to consider...

The main reason I got winter tires was because I wanted sticky summer-only tires for autox.

Summer-only tires aren't supposed to be used in cold weather, and they're completely useless in snow.

So, if I was going to have two sets of tires, I figured one might as well be a dedicated winter tire.

The stock tires will be completely useless in the snow as well (they're technically a summer tire). I got stuck on a steep incline last year with less than an inch of snow on the ground. So if you're planning on daily driving the car all year and you only want one set of tires, all-seasons would probably be your best bet.

Drive a summer tire in freezing weather in the dry. It'll slip like it's in the rain, except it's dry...now imagine that same tire in the wet. Seasonal tires are a good idea, otherwise get a good All-Season - still going to be useless in the snow, but less so than a summer tire.

Honestly, my decision came to me when I saw that I was on the Michelin tires (summer) instead of Bridgestone (all seasons). I wouldn't have bought winter tires if I had the all seasons because we do get snow infrequently. But since I was already on summers, I didn't want to buy all year round tires. So I got winters, and I'll be switching back to summer when winter passes.

I drove around quite a bit last year when it snowed on the stock primacy HP's. Didn't have any issues.

I'm not sure it will be as easy tomorrow when I try and drive home. I figure it will wait and snow until I get to work. I guess I'll see how the ContiSportContact 3's do.

...Or maybe I'll hi-jack the wives Passat.

Just to give you my two cents as someone who was in your position exactly one month ago, I was at a crossroads as well. Everyone I read on the forums were getting winter shoes while the guys at the dealership were telling me there's no need cause "our cars are so low it'll push the snow away".

Long story short, I did my research on a bunch of different options and ending up getting a set of the Pirelli Cinturato P7. They're all-season tires but the great thing is the reviews and surveys on tirerack.com and a couple of other sites for snow and ice traction were phenomenal as all-seasons. Another benefit is you don't have to keep switching b/t winter and summer tires.

I can tell you since putting them on a week ago, I've noticed a big difference in traction. After driving it to and from work in this most recent snow/ice storm, I've had no problems and honestly few a lot safer since pushing the stock Michelin primacy HP's which slid virtually everywhere lol Hope this helps you out in your decision!

I have been hemming and hawing at biting the bullet on winter tires for the last 3 weeks. We have had zero snow in the boston area to date this winter. Had 1/2 of slush last night but the roads were clear and it was 41 degrees in the afternoon.

Conti extreme winter contact is my top choice. I currently holding multiple price quotes.

We are supposed to get up to 3 inches of snowfall during the middle part of the day tomorrow. I will either see how my stock all seasons do on the commute home or take the plunge and buy the extremewinter contacts on my lunch break. Everybody and their sister have been telling me you would be crazy to drive on all season tires.

I think that I am going to test it out that theory for myself. The proof will be in the pudding

I had always thought the michelin's were all seasons like the bridgestones, I suppose thats where there confusion originated from.

I guess now i just need to decide to go winter or all season.

No, lol. Glad I could be helpful. If you need some to exchange tires for you, my friend would he able to do it for a price.

Just took a look at these and it seem like a great option, priced reasonably too. Sorry to hijack the thread, I'll try to post something on topic later.

It's been a bit of a bitch. This is Canada cold!

Dog walks get shortened to 25 min from the usual hour to avoid frostbite on exposed skin.

Why walk the dog when you can eat the dog? You can make jerky and stew and probably soup after all that.
