Powertrain vid is easily my favorite.

OrbitalEllipses 04-24-2012 11:14 AM

Kinda goin' for that Initial D feel aren't they? You can absolutely see Toyota and Subaru's different philosophies regarding marketing in their separate videos.

Guff 04-24-2012 12:05 PM

Toyota is definitely reaching out to a younger audience, whereas Subaru is vying for a more knowledgeable base, considering their film on the BRZ...

madfast 04-24-2012 12:14 PM

interesting... in the first video they say low rpm uses a mix of port and fuel injection, mid rpm uses DI only, and high rpm uses a mix as well. the 2gr-fse however, uses a mix in low/mid rpm, and DI only at high rpm...

That should explain the high torque around 2800 rpms and after 5000 rpms eh?

Exactly what I was thinking. Welp, guess this answers the question I had last night, right? LOLZ

That was awesome!

I think the different company sizes and cultures play a role in this.

zoomzoomers 04-24-2012 04:18 PM

Definitely different than what Subaru put out, but still good!

blu_ 04-24-2012 04:25 PM

Its funny to me that there is all this bickering by us fanbois, started by the companies themselves, about who did what, when, and where.... BUT so far this looks to be one of those rare odd automotive marriages that has worked out brilliantly.

Usually these type things turn into massive trainwrecks... Chrysler TC by Maserati is the main one that comes to mind.

I'm not convinced that Subaru is vying for a more knowledgeable base as any knowledgeable car enthusiast will see that the 2 cars are essentially the same.

I have to change my underwear, I will be right back.

Well that one failed because it was basically Chrysler giving Maserati a Lebaron and say "here, now turn this into a luxury car for rich people!"
And that was already a bunk strategy proven when Chevrolet gave Cadillac a Cavalier and said "here turn this into the ultimate Cadillac!" And those companies are one in the same (GM)

Its also similar to Toyota giving Aston Martin a Toyota/Scion IQ and saying "This is for your fuel economy numbers. Turn it into a luxury car!"
At least that marriage had a reason. Aston didnt actually need an IQ at all, but they needed it to drop their corporate fuel economy average.

Now the Subaru/Toyota partnership, doesnt seem at all like a disfunctional one. Its just that each one wants to brag about who did what because of how well recieved the car is. Toyota keeps bringing up that Sports 800 just because it was a FR boxer car they made a long time ago. The AE86 was the philosophy they wanted this car to follow, so they had to tie it to Toyota somehow.
Now Subaru, we all know they did the brunt of the engineering work. But did they REALLY want a RWD sports car when their entire lineup consisted of AWD machines? Did they REALLY want a NA non-turbo'd engine?
The butting of heads between the 2 companies probably was a good thing to come to fruition about how this car eventually turned out.

I agree...

The design video didn't even talk about the T =O

There's Ts everywhere on the car >_>

DoogenBurns 04-24-2012 11:47 PM

I noticed in the powertrain vid the had the U-Joints operating at close to 0 deg, im having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Also wondering why they went with what looks like a 2 piece driveshaft. Just kinda curious.

trueno86power 04-24-2012 11:55 PM

Finally a video that illustrate why it sound so great in every inboard video, they desing it to sound that way !

Blue FRS 04-25-2012 12:17 AM

I just want mine more and more each day. going to call my dealer tomorow and find out the latest news he has on when its coming in.

Turbowned 04-25-2012 12:09 PM

I'm just confused as to who these videos are targeted at. I thought the 86 was only called the "86" in Japan, whereas everywhere else it's either the GT86 or the FR-S...

And what was with the cheesy burnout at the end of the design vid? LOL

It's Scion/Toyota. What'd u expect? :( Isn't this car marketed as a drifting/fun car?

Turbowned 04-25-2012 06:44 PM

I dunno, just seems weird. If the video were for U.S. buyers, why wasn't it called the FR-S? If it were for Euro buyers, why not the GT86? If for JDM buyers, why subtitle in English?

Verge 04-25-2012 06:51 PM

Seems like it was more for the jdm market cause they are showing us what we wont get like hids drls an pushstarts hvac and bodykits ... Lol i would pay the subbie limited price if i could get the same thing from scion here in the states. End rant .. Wow im getting old

dori. 04-26-2012 10:50 PM

Youtube channel is called "ToyotaHK" aka Toyota Hong Kong.
http://www.youtube.com/user/ToyotaHK?feature=watch

So HK is getting the car as Toyota 86.

is that why the suabru and toyota variants have different suspension tuning, to relate to the old AE86 and how it has small differences between models?

dookie11 05-03-2012 03:16 PM

YES! He said the badges can be easily removed! WOoo
