Jumping ship from FR-S to BRZ
Hey guys,
I have pre-ordered an FR-S in Calgary, I think I am at the 6th spot at the dealership. After the recent announcement of BRZ price, I think it would make sense for me to jump ship. To me, the headlights on both the BRZ and FR-S look great. What do you guys think? Also, anyone from Calgary? Thank you! |
Considered doing the same thing. Went to one of the largest Subaru dealership in BC and was told they're not going to sell at MSRP, they're only getting 3 (once a month starting May), all 3 already spoken for, and they're no longer accepting pre-orders until further notice.
If you can find a dealership that'll accept pre-orders for summer delivery, put a deposit down but don't withdraw the FRS deposit. Goodluck! |
I would phone around and try to find a dealership that you want to work with. As the above poster said I wouldn't give up your line for the FR-S yet though unless you're certain you want to upgrade to the BRZ. Might be a rude awakening if you find you're not able to get a vehicle after you give up your place in line.

I've sent out emails to subaru dealers in calgary, hopefully they will reply me soon.
I love the car, based on the reviews and pictures. But I would be mad paying for the FR-S as I know I would get so much more for just ~$2K at Subaru. I think the LED, Sat Nav, etc, would add alot to the resell value too. |

Do it, we'll welcome you to the dark side :)

To me the price difference between the FR-S and the BRZ is more than worth it. The navigation and headlights alone are a no-brainer for me. I'm getting the Sport-Tech pkg anyways but even base to base the BRZ is the way to go.

Hey guys, I have just got a quote from a Subaru dealership in Calgary, on top of the MSRP, there are these charges:
Frieght & PDI: $1,595.00 Locking Wheel Nuts: $ 60.00 Block Heater: $395.00 (Est.) A/C Levy: $100.00 Enviornment Levy: $28.25 Sound shield, Security Etch & Nitrogen: $895.00 AMVIC Fee: $6.25 + GST. Does that sound reasonable? What's the Sound shield, Security Etch & Nitrogen fee??? Thanks! |

Are the tires nitrogen Filled?...Sound shield?..extra sound proofing bs maybe? Security etch must be something related to the VIN and IF it ever gets stolen. i'm guessing the Enviroment levy has the tire tax tacked in it? Get them to throw in the lock nuts for free or something...;) |
I've just got another quote from another Subaru dealership in calgary:
2013 BRZ Sport-Tech AT: MSRP: $30,495.00 Freight/PDI: $1,595.00 A/C, Alberta Tire & AMVIC Levies: $126.25 Admin Charges: $395.00 (includes 36month Tire Road Hazard Warranty) Sub-Total: $32,611.25 GST: $1,630.56 Total: $34,241.81 Hmm...it is less than what I have posted earlier from another dealer. |

My god... these subie dealers are crapping all over corporate's generosity. |

The ONLY extra fees you are required to pay (and the dealership is required to charge) are the AMVIC, A/C, and Tire fees. The "documentation" fee is pure profit and if you're paying full retail for a car you should NOT be paying the doc fee. AMVIC is 35 dollars, A/C is 99 and tires are 16 so that's 150.00 over and above the MSRP and Freight/PDI.
The old trick is to have the documentation fee pre-printed on the bill of sales to give the illusion it's non-negotiable. |

Surely that is some 'negative option' charges to catch out people who don't question things. Also if that is the first you have heard/seen of those options, that is really dodgy behaviour. That's enough to make me talk to other dealerships really. |
I got mine ordered at edmonton, tire/etch is $395? is that the normal price?

Here is the sales manager response to "What is the $895 fee for?"
"The $895 is our value added package that comes with every new Subaru. Since Calgary started using salt on their roads, customers have seen the value in having their investment undercoated to prevent rust from eating away at the floor of their vehicle. It also reduces road noise and harshness by 70%. We also put an acid etched sticker on the paint surfaces of the vehicle to prevent theft. This is a $5000 benefit to you in the event your vehicle is stolen and not found within 30 days. Lastly, we fill the tires with nitrogen to prevent leaks with the fluctuating temperatures in Calgary. It also helps with fuel consumption. In the event you have a low tire, it uses more gas then if your tires were all filled to their rated PSI." Hmm....I think they are very creative. |

You should ask them for proof (ie. pre application, post application decibel level tests) on this 70%road noise claim. Also what the hell is the 'harshness' part? They putting new floaty suspension on while they are at it? Etching it to hasten recovery, not prevent theft, otherwise they wouldn't have this 30 day $5000 bonus. Hey great my car got nicked, but they haven't found it after a month... I'm getting a bonus! Who pays it and what is the procedure to get compensated? So the tyres on the car arriving from Japan will be refilled with nitrogen? Ya that's not something you could do yourself, if you could be bothered. This is a perfect example of why stealerships get that tag. Shake your hand with one arm and stab you with the other. |

Subaru dealers knew that we would pay these "fees" because the demand is so great and as Canadians were used to companies gouging at us(ROGERS). Based on this I believe that most dealers are charging some sort of "fee". Looks like my $500 for admin and registration is looking like a good deal compared to $895. Anyone else have been charged for some sort of unknown "fee".
