Scion is axeing the xB and xD models!

According to an article by Torque News, Scion is planning to axe the xB and xD models. Apparently every car in Scion's lineup is suppose to only last a single life cycle car. Who knew?:iono:

It seems unlikely and with just one source I'm not ready to believe that Scion is going to cut two models from its already tiny 4 (soon to be five) model lineup. But I guess they started with just the xA and xB.

That blogger got his info from Ward's Auto, so I'm inclined to believe it.

I've never had much of an opinion about the xD either way, but I'll be glad to see the gen 2 xB go (model bloat makes me sad).

Yes but it's a boat that sells pretty well.

It's not up to SCION to decide. It's all up to Toyota (JP) to make another model or not

But it is (probably) up to Scion to decide which JDM Toyotas they want to import and rebadge. Which begs the question, are the Ist (xA/xD) and the Corolla Rumion (xB.2) being discontinued? or is Scion just looking to change directions?

I don't think so... But again, I'm not SCION VP or SCION rep, idk

MtnDrvr86 04-22-2012 02:26 PM

That was how Scion was supposed to be from the start, xD took over for xA. even if they were very similar. Small, quirky, semi limited run, one model life cycle and move on to the next. I like it but itsa high turnover/conversion costs. Not as bad since most of them are kinda rebadged cars anyways

Dimman 04-22-2012 03:59 PM

They could be trying to readjust their demographics down in age again. Aren't those the ones most popular with retirees?

If that's the case FRS only have one life cycle here in US

Sasquachulator 04-22-2012 04:10 PM

Well the xB grew too fat and bloated, so it lost the lustre the original had, and basically became a square Corolla hatchback.
The xD was...well...not popular. It was pretty much made redundant when the US got the 5 door Yaris since those cars were pretty similar (except for engine)

Plus these cars have stagnated for so long since they were introduced....

Well there are the exceptions, like there were 2 generations of xB and 2 generations of tC.

The xA and xD are both rebadged Toyota Ist's. The xD did not replace the xA, it's simply a second generation xA with a different nameplate.

If Toyota/Scion/Subaru collaborate on another car I want it to borrow the Impreza's tech repackaged into a smaller econobox. Make it the world's most affordable AWD car aimed squarely at the SX4 (which is exactly like an AWD Scion). Or bring back the Corolla GT4 and make a WRC comeback (would do wonders to the Scion brand). Make it a cultural icon.

Well maybe scion is looking for a more sportier line up? You think they could be playing with the idea of keeping scion the cheaper sporty alternative to toyota or lexus?

Edit: And what i mean by that is keeping all the 'pure' sports cars in scion.

Yes, I know. I'm just saying, if his statement was true, FRS will be in same boat... Which I highly doubt

S2kphile 04-22-2012 04:58 PM

They should make a cheap 'Kei' car like this: F' the iQ.

^yeah, that's the one! I love that car

4agze 04-23-2012 09:22 PM

If its true no love lost here but i think they should keep the xb

vaporiz 04-23-2012 10:13 PM

Good riddance, never liked either.

Perhaps we'll see nicer sedans replace them, but then again knowing Scion, they're probably going to instead have a lot more abnormal shaped cars.

tripjammer 04-23-2012 10:50 PM

Yeah what scion needs is a RWD light weight sports sedan, and a sportier version of the Prius C but with the gauges all in front of you.

Oh and bring back the MR2 and make it a scion. Call it a scion MR-S. And make the next supra a scion call it the scion SR-S.

Lol!

But I think scion is done in about 5 years. Their only hope is to try to make it the performance brand.

Careful, our FRS rests on the fate of scion:sigh:

When Scion launched the mantra was 3-year model cycles and no evolutionary models (no 2nd generation models). Well, for financial reasons they broke their three-year cycle rule and for marketing reasons they released a 2nd-gen xB (but named the obvious xA replacement the xD?!?)

I'm glad to see these two cars vanish and I would like to see brand new models every 3-4 years that don't repeat any cycles.

Well if the Scion brand folds they just retransition the cars back to Toyotas anyways. I mean, if theres a market for them, a badge swap isnt gonna break the bank lol.
