If you had $10K to spend

just on performance, what would you do? I'm asking because that's what I want to do. I don't have the facilities, tools, or skills to do anything really technical myself, so I would need to pay someone to do it. Just curious to see what others think. Thanks.

Turbo95eg6 11-24-2013 07:25 PM

I would use half on suspension/wheels and the other half on engine mods. Basic bolt ons, depends in you are interested in going forced induction or not.

Thanks for the response, and let me clarify. I'd love to get up in the 250-300hp range and then upgrade my wheels/tires/suspension to handle that.

If i had an extra 10K, i might of gotten an Audi S3.

Fair enough, but no AWD for me, thanks.

Force Induction > Intake/Headers/Exhaust > Brakes > Suspension > Tires

Few items to look at:

- JDL Headers
- AVO Turbo Kit
- Vortech SC
- FA20Club Turbo
- Tires: 235/245 Pilot Super Sports
- Wheels, personal preference.
- Exhaust, also an issue of personal preference in sound (or performance), but you want to look at 3" units since you're looking for Force Induction.

Also, do not forget the ever important post-install tune.

Eh, to be frank it's half assed AWD.

The only time the AWD truly works is when the car notice it's slipping or when it's truly needed, 99% of the time it will be in FWD only.

For sure man.

Whatever you do however, do not rush into the purchase(s). Read up, talk to others and do a bit of market research.

Whenever you feel truly comfortable, take the jump.

charged86 11-24-2013 08:20 PM

Pay bills give some to a charity. Then see what is left over buy a blower

Joakim3 11-24-2013 08:22 PM

10k....

AVO Turbo kit > ECU Tune > JDL Headers + Custom semi-catless quad exhaust > KW coilovers > Rotiform BLQ 19x8.5/9.5 Rims & Pirelli P-Zero tires

equals one happy man :party0030:

Wise 11-24-2013 08:22 PM

Coilovers

My bills are paid. I bike to work a few blocks away. Have put under 3k miles on my FR-S in 9 months. Only drive it for fun and some errands. Donate my time to Meals on Wheels and a local pet shelter, and money and blood to the Red Cross.

I've never understood, how people, particularly those willing to spend so much money on their cars, need to be spoon fed this stuff?

I get the mental image of someone buying parts, not necessarily knowing what they are for or what purpose they really serve, handing them and their car over to some joe schmoe and saying, "here, put this on this."

I'm just trying to pick people's brains and learn from others to help inform my decision. Sorry if that bothers you.

B L U E S L A T E 11-24-2013 08:52 PM

This is what I did...

Tein SRC $4600
Volk TE37RT $3200
Bridgestone RE-11A $800
Cusco rear LCA $500
Berk Track pipe $150
Greddy intake $300
All fluids $150 or so.

I have done a lot more now, but that's what I did first on my BRZ and it's pretty close to 10k.

jflogerzi 11-24-2013 09:02 PM

With 10K here is what I would get

Innovate SC Kit
Custom Dyno Tune
RCE Yellow Springs
light set of 17 or 18 inch rims no more than 8 wide
new tires
Oil cooler
New brake pads with steel braided lines and new fluid

Put the rest to pay off the car sooner, or track time!

yea and once the world governments take it down you'll be left with nothing...unless you cash out first lol.

would not invest in bitcoins right now way too high

Kelbyat07 11-24-2013 10:53 PM

FA20 Turbo
Exhaust
Headers
Front pipe
Over pipe
Intake
Performance filter
Tune

mrceltic 11-24-2013 10:54 PM

Turbocharger or supercharger, follow it up with a tune. Spend the rest on weight reduction... Tires, wheels, lithium battery, rear seat removal; easily the cheapest way to boost performance.

If you still have cash left over... Cosmetics like lights, tint, antenna or minor performance upgrades like exhaust, cold air intake, brakes. Maybe upgraded audio system if that's your thing?

Just wanted to put this out to defend myself from any other attacks . I'm in the IT field. I live in a condo. I'm 39. I used to dabble in auto mechanics. With the help of friends, I restored a '67 GTO 20 or so years ago. I also got into modding 4WD's (also with the help of friends). I am not a mechanic. I am intimidated by modern vehicles, because I don't understand them. I love my FR-S, and I just want to make it even more fun to drive. I am an adrenaline junkie. I put a hitch on my FR-S so I could tow my dual sport motorcycle. I don't want to do any mods to my FR-S, because I'm not qualified, and I don't have the time to become qualified. I just want to enjoy driving it, and I'd like to spend a little money to make it more fun.

def,

but man, to think i was looking at it back at the start of this year at <$15 a coin and decided not to dabble because the dedicated mining machines were on the verge of coming out and the coin/kw didn't make sense,

the bigger mistake was just not buying a pile.

oh well hindsight is a bitch

whaap 11-24-2013 11:02 PM

All of the above or invest it wisely and retire a wealthy man.

I suspect there are plenty of people here in the same boat, myself included.

All my knowledge of upgrades/mods come from research here/internet, from friends or people at the track. I couldn't install a new CAI to save my life, luckily I can afford to pay someone else to do it.

I'd rather spend my weekend at the track instead of in my driveway trying to work the kinks out of a new turbo kit anyway. ;)

If I had $10k to blow I would save it until I had enough for the ls3 swap.

My wife has the ls3 swap while I went for a super charger... it is no comparison the ls3 is superior in every way. but we had a crashed corvette with less miles on it than her brz which not everyone has so it was an easy choice for us a $16k undertaking for others. I think it is great that people strive to make their cars better and in no way encourage the swap unless they a fully prepared for the time and money that it requires. At the same time no force induction can come close to an ls3 swap we only gained 67lbs in exchange for 425hp.

Fully built low compression motor with a gt3076r turbo kit. I'm sure that's doable with 10k.

stevo_12v 11-25-2013 12:29 AM

Just got word from the local tuner who works on my car. Their 86 with a HKS S/C was putting out 246rwhp on their dyno(which reads kinda low - STOCK car read 130rwhp.. My car with N/A mods read 168hp), anyway.. its a gain of 116+ rwhp all up with mods.

Mod list on that car:
HKS GT S/C
HKS EL Headers
Locally made frontpipe
HKS Spec-L catback

Budget of that would be slightly over $10k, but you can probably remove the frontpipe/catback and get a local/custom equivalent(you'd have to go custom anyway as FI's need 2.75in or bigger)
So all you'd really need would be:
- HKS GT S/C
- HKS 4-2-1 Headers
- MOTIV Overpipe
- Locally made frontpipe(with HFC) and cat-back
- A tune.

BTW, it made that figure of 246 WITH the restrictor plate in place.

drewbot 11-25-2013 01:08 AM
