Vent Window

Has anyone ever tried to make the small front glass windows into a vent window? They are great in the summer but I assume auto manufactures don't make them anymore for a reason. I thought that would be cool to have something like that

not sure if this is possible with our windows.. because we don't have top door frame..

Suberman 11-22-2013 09:27 AM

Manufacturers deleted these when proper ventilation systems were installed.

No more fender vents either.

The round vents at the ends of the dash replace the vent windows.

Huge theft weak point.

Noisy.

Vent windows don't actually work.

Impossible to do without a full door frame.

I could go on.

I'm surprised that when saying noisy that you didn't specify the whistle they make as you roll down the road.

I agree that instalation wouldn't have been possible because of our frameless windows. But I gotta ask, what cars were all you guys driving? The last wing windows that I had were dead silent...either that or I wasn't aware because of all the other mechanical clatter going on... :-)

ML 11-22-2013 11:12 AM

I remember having one in my 1988 Ford F250 long bed extended cab...hahaha the vent windows was awesome! and having the high beams on the floor, I miss that.

1979 F-350 custom... However, I will admit that the huge side mirrors probably helped make them even louder than they were. We didn't call them wing windows either... They were called "Air Conditioning" lol

whaap 11-22-2013 11:47 AM

In the days when only the wealthy could afford to drive a car with a/c, vent windows served a good purpose because they could be cranked all the way which would direct an air flow on the driver or the passenger if you had one. They were also convenient for tossing out cigarette butts. With todays car having a/c they are no longer needed.

My old Jeep had vent windows, they weren't loud but then again the vehicle wasn't exactly quiet. I miss the vent windows though, they were great for those in between times when the defrost isn't quick enough to clear the windshield.

SirBrass 11-22-2013 01:55 PM

It'd look tacky as hell on our cars, too.

On the contrary, if you succeeded it would make it very easy to pull off...

Those are for directing air up your shorts to cool your junk.

prometheus 11-23-2013 12:22 PM

I must admit I love the vents, had them in my F250 work truck many years back. would be pretty cool to have them in our cars I think I would use it a lot, as I don't use the A/C very often and mostly drive with the windows down.

BRZfan 11-23-2013 07:04 PM

I realize you are kidding :happyanim: but the REAL function was to exhaust cigar smoke or cigarette smoke to the outside and not have the wind blowing in. This meant for a more relaxed smoke. Of course, those were the days when they had as much as four (4) cigarette lighters (not electrical receptacles) in a car. (For cigars in cars such as Lincoln, Cadillac and Buicks and cigarettes such as Ford, Chevy and Plymouths). Today, it may have a different use but wouldn't help much, IYKWIM.

You're confusing vent windows with footwell vents. The footwell vents direct air as you suggest. However, use of footwell vents for this purpose must be done in conjunction with open vent windows unless you are driving alone.

For some, this will be necessary even when driving alone.

BRZfan 11-24-2013 12:36 PM

That's ight - ALSO

That's right. Also, in many of the fullsize cars of the 60s and 70s there were what we called "crotch cooler/balls blowers" vents. They were located in the lower instrument panel and directed (adjustable) to the middle of the seat. For those posters who "wish they had" some feature they were dreaming about: GET OVER IT!

Do you not enjoy the smell of your own taint? :bellyroll:

I loved the crouch coolers in my minivans. They were separately controlled and allowed my wife to have the heat on and I could keep a temperature I enjoyed.

How about installing a steam engine while you are at it?

Dual role is feasible. Connect the rear mounted steam engine to the front wheels via another drive shaft then exhaust the steam cylinders through a trunk mounted steam whistle and then the rear diffuser for additional thrust and ground effects downforce.... totally cool. As they used to say.

More precisely "factory installed 2-60 air conditioning" (two vents, 60 MPH).

Totally agree! Miss this as well! Was nice not having to take your hands away from the wheel.

lol I'd blind people all the time if it was on the floor like this pic shows

I'm 6' 3" and it wouldn't work well for me since my feet rest right where that switch would be.

I guess position was different by company? I think our Ford had it over to the right and not directly in line with the foot rest... Can't remember! I see your point though.

Always on the left. You needed your spare foot to operate it.

Double clutch, heel and toe AND dimming your lights at the same time was a b!tch tho.

And you do? The dip beam stalk can be operated without taking either hand off the steering wheel unless your fingers are incredibly short

They weren't that sensitive, it took intentional pressure to make them turn on/off. you could rest your foot on it.
