Just shown at the Tokyo Auto Show.

Subaru soft debuted a world premier car here in Tokyo, and the rollout was so quiet we had to corner execs to find the scoop. Turns out, it's what's probably the coolest, damn-near-ready for production car of the entire event. It's a thinly disguised BRZ wagon, called the Cross Sport Concept, and ignore the silly name for a second. Underneath the slick wagon bodywork, this concept is all-BRZ everything. That means, most likely, rear-wheel drive and the familiar 2-liter flat-four engine.

Yoshio Hirakawa, corporate Senior Vice President, explained that the concept is a mere two inches longer than the stock BRZ, with for more usable rear legroom. But the real story is the excellent hatchback layout, an obvious Subaru strength. In concept form, a double liftgate/tailgate provides excellent utility (think of track days, when you could either chill on the tailgate or use it as a tool bench), and a completely fold-flat rear seat and front passenger seat that collapses totally flat as well, would ease the big-box store run.

The concept looks fully baked, even if we likely won't get the gorgeous suede interior and wood clad hatch area/liftgate. Other show-only goodies, we'd guess, are STi brakes and chromed stereoscope forward collision safety cameras (they look like missile launchers here, but in production they're sure to get toned down).

Production? There wasn't a single peep from Hirakawa-san about future plans, but it's an absolutely obvious line extension for Subaru, since a BRZ coupe/hatch would fulfill not only a practical niche, but an enthusiast dream as well.

no stanks! Keep SUV's as 4 door and AWD. If you want a sporty rwd car, then buy a FR-s/BRZ.

mrk1 11-19-2013 08:21 PM

Im in for a shooting brake BRZ, no cvt though

Tokyo motor show 2013: Subaru Cross Sport Design concept

Cross Sport Design concept shown for the first time in Tokyo, revealing Subaru's perception of the future 'urban SUV' market

The Cross Sport features a flat-four engine, which drives the rear wheels through a constant-velocity transmission

Quote:

The Subaru Cross Sport Design concept has been seen for the first time at the Tokyo motor show.

Subaru defines the concept as a combination of 'sport' and 'utility'. It's claimed to feature "easy seat access, a comfortable interior, and abundant luggage space".

The concept is 4300mm long and weighs just 1250kg, and is stated to display what Subaru thinks to be future direction for urban SUVs.

Details are few, but it's reputed to feature a horizontally opposed engine that transmits power through a CVT to the rear wheels.

The concept has been shown alongside the Levorg, Crossover 7 and Viziv Evolution models.

Subaru Cross Sport Design Concept Looks Like a BRZ Outback Edition

Quote:

What's the first thing that comes to your mind after looking at these first images of Subaru's Cross Sport Concept that is making its debut today at the Tokyo Motor Show?

If you want to know our thoughts, we found the concept looking like a BRZ with a shooting brake-style upper part and a tall-riding crossover lower part. That's just our imagination, though, as Subaru hasn't released full details on the study yet.

What the Japanese carmaker did tell us is that the study combines "SPORT" and "UTILITY" features offering plenty of luggage space and road clearance, with the concept measuring a compact 4.3 meters or about 169 inches in length.

For more information, we'll have to wait for the full release.

needs moar low. and lose the cvt, for God's sake.

The359 11-19-2013 09:04 PM

Yeah, take away the off-road jacked up height and the oddly colored body cladding, and you have yourself a nice looking shooting brake. :w00t:

1086 11-19-2013 09:10 PM

ugly - hahaha - it looks like a camaro hatchback gone full artard

illmatic 11-19-2013 09:25 PM

Subaru's HTCVT has been compared to Porsche's PDK in terms of shift speed. If this ever comes into production, as long as they give us an option for a manual, we all win.

Taro 11-19-2013 09:37 PM

Why is Subaru so insistent on turning all of it's nice cars into dorky wagons? They already wrecked the Impreza. And please, no one point out that the WRX STi is still a thing. It's obvious to me.

Because there is a demand for it...

I see this turning into a giant block like the forester..

Lets face it, Subaru never was sweet looking. Yes, I own Impreza coupe & it looks nice... but compare to all the JDM cars that came out in that area, yeah it's not pretty

reni 11-19-2013 09:48 PM

An FR-S/BRZ shooting brake sounds great in theory, but I'd have to say the execution is poor here...

I was only being diplomatic so the BRZ crowd didn't jump on me. But you said it first. :happyanim:

Yes, despite how much I like the twins, Subaru makes ugly cars. I said it. I like to pretend that Toyota did all the styling. Which I hear isn't too far from the case.

If it is exactly like the concept - It will be a winner.

Unfortunatley - like any concept - It will be dumbed down - :sigh:

Khyron 11-20-2013 12:55 AM

The BRZ Shooting-Brake is almost the perfect daily driver. Make it lower, get rid of the cheap looking body kit fender flare things and put a proper transmission in it, at the least a dual clutch if not a manual. Why doesn't Subaru have a dual clutch transmission? Oh, and the 2.0 turbo from the new WRX would be nice too.
It's two inches longer with better rear leg room but is most likely heavier and not as stiff as the coupe. I guess that's not a bad compromise for those would want a back seat. Could this also serve as a platform for a sedan?

mmontes 11-20-2013 01:14 AM

I think the front and rear end look B-E-A-UTIFUL.
I could imagine a nice beautiful daily driver version with our motor probably a little more power though and also, a 6 piston boxer motor that's turbo/supercharged for a sick ass STI Edition of this car. :burnrubber:
That would give Porsche a run for their money. :burnrubber:

DAEMANO 11-20-2013 01:23 AM

As a brand differentiators, perhaps it's Subaru that gets the dorky tall wagon while Toyota/Scion get the low slung shooting brake that the forum is screaming for. In the U.S. a fast funky wagon fits right into Scion's quirky lineup. Slap in powertrain elements from the Lexus CT200h and nearly all the rumored specs are there (+4", hybrid powertrain, CVT).

Rampage 11-20-2013 01:54 AM

I hate SUVs and crossovers but if I was going to buy one then this or the Scion version would be it.

Giccin 11-20-2013 02:11 AM

Ooo interesting.

Curious to know what the production model would look like. Lines look nice.. would be nice if it wasn't SUV height... and that trunk opens kinda funky..

Time to wait and see.

h4nh 11-20-2013 02:12 AM

:bellyroll: noooooooooooooo lol

ZetaVI 11-20-2013 04:59 AM

I wasn't expecting this. Nonetheless, not good looking but there are some parts I like especially the taillights.

More shooting brake and less crossover and they would have my attention.

1. Lower
2. Remove Oddly Colored Body Panels
3. Wheels and Low Profile Tires
4. Headlights from BRZ/FT-86
5. Show it to me in a real color (WRB, SWP, Red etc...), The grey is dulling the lines.

Intriguing...
1. Doesn't need to be much lower, if at all.
2. Keep it all the same paint scheme
3. Wheels and Lower Profile Tires. This probably won't be a race car so I would be good with 50 series or so.
4. Like the front end. Differentiates it from the BRZ
5. Seeing it in colors would be nice, but I would probably end up with Silver/dark windows anyway. Although the blue they took away this year from the BRZ would be good.
6. 230 to 250HP would be nice.
7. If it were to happen, which I doubt, why not go all the way and make it AWD.

Maybe that is Subaru's solution to skipping/avoiding the Torque Dip altogether

I loved this concept when it came out. I bet the Levorg is the near production version of that concept... which again, lost a lot of its good looks in translation from concept to production. :(

And I think this BRZ concept looks awesome, but CVT kills it for me. Stick or get out!

DylanFRS 11-20-2013 09:48 AM

I love it! If it was shown to perform in SCCA C-Street I would trade my FR-S in for one.

(It probably won't though with the higher height and most likely softer springs.)
