Subaru is apparently racing at Le Mans next year

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/196f.../ku-xlarge.jpg

And apparently they will be using the FA20DIT. :party0030:

I would like to add, they are an engine supplier, and not making a chassis

BlaineWasHere 11-15-2013 02:11 PM

Is this for LMP1 or LMP2??? If it's LMP1 we won't see it here in the states.

FA20 transformed into Le Mans engine by Revolutionary Technologies United

Subaru engine for Le Mans revealed
By Sam // November 15, 2013

http://www.racecar-engineering.com/w.../upscooby1.jpg

Subaru’s new FA20DIT is being developed into a highly efficient racing engine for Le Mans Prototypes. The apparently radical eLMP R engine from Revolutionary Technologies United (RTU) is a 1.6 turbo charged short stroke boxer engine based on a standard Subaru block, it was revealed for the first time at the PMW Expo in Cologne, Germany.

It is expected that it will produce in excess of 550bhp and can run with very little cooling indeed due to its use of a patented ‘Pseudo Adiabatic’ combustion process. This the team behind the project would make a car using it not only highly fuel efficient but also highly aerodynamically efficient due to significantly reduced cooling demands. However the engine is on the heavy side at 130kg.

http://www.racecar-engineering.com/w...1/upscooby.jpg

The man behind the project, Al Solari has something of an interesting past in sportscar racing but claims that this technology has already been proven on a five cylinder Audi engine which developed in excess of 800bhp. Certainly if the technology works as claimed then the engine would (aside from its weight) be highly competitive in a fuel flow restricted formula.

Performance figures and verification of the RTU claims will be announced at the Autosport Engineering Show in January on stand E1162.

Haven't heard, but I'd like to see it in P2, and see if we can stuff one into a Riley DP chassis.

OrbitalEllipses 11-15-2013 06:07 PM

Holy awesome carbon fiber timing cover and intake.

Dat turbo placement!

rcm47 11-15-2013 06:13 PM

It's not an FA20

Flat Black VW 11-15-2013 06:15 PM

another article I saw on this said it is expected to produce about 550hp. If this is the case I would expect it to be LMP2 since they are restricted to 450hp and LMP1 is restricted to ~700hp.

I really hope its LMP2, would love to see it here in the states.

Hey, I don't much about this. The site I got it from said it was an FA20DIT. If you have more info, please do inform!

They said it is based on the Subaru block, but destroked to 1.6L

99% sure this is LMP2. LMP1 needs moar powah!

EvilBeaverFace 11-15-2013 06:25 PM

To keep this from being strictly a news article and maybe attempt to get some discussion going:

Does anyone have any idea what ‘Pseudo Adiabatic’ means?

I quickly looked it up and this is the definition that I found:

An adiabatic process is a process that takes place in such a manner that no heat enters or leaves the system

Lot of search results are blocked here at work. Do we have anyone more familiar with the term or how it could even be possible in an engine even with the modification "pseudo" attached to it?

Very interesting regardless.

EDIT:Here is the link to the document where I found the definition, if anyone cares to take a look.

That's what I was thinking but there is no article linked.

1.6L is the engine size for WRC BTW...

CSG Mike 11-15-2013 06:50 PM

LeMans Prototype cars are based on the production engine, but it's like saying a Honda/Acura LeMans V6 is based on the production accord J35 V6 (which it is).

Ganthrithor 11-15-2013 06:51 PM

1.6L, 550 hp?

:woah:

Here is a link to the article, should answer all of your questions.

I know, pretty much nothing is similar to the production engine. It is jjust cool that this engine can be changed into a race engine. . .

You are just going to have to change everything out.

Whitigir 11-15-2013 07:01 PM

Very cool. Can we put it in the BR-Z and make 300 HP without cooling needed Please ?

Well...

To be fair, in the '60s, a 7 liter V8 would hit 400+hp all day long (and quite a bit more than that with a good blower), so your comparison there is a bit misleading, as far as technological progress is concerned.

strat61caster 11-15-2013 07:18 PM

Since this actually prompts discussion unlike the other post...

I believe when referring to an 'adiabatic' engine the idea is to allow the engine to run hot, as such less energy is allowed to be turned into waste heat and it creates better useful power. This is not a new concept, it's part of the reason Ferdinand Porsche designed the Beetle and his own sports cars to be rear engined, to reduce the cooling effects and squeeze more power (and thus more efficiency) out of his boxers. The limit to doing this is in the materials, obviously you can only get so hot until metal starts warping which was a problem with his VW's and 911's in the 60's since they were air cooled sitting in traffic on a hot summer day left several German cars stranded on the side of the road.

As for the power output per displacement, nothing tops BMW:
[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M12"]BMW M12 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

This is cool, but not extraordinary.

Edit: for those unwilling to skim the BMW article: 1.5L Turbo inline 4 with a peak output estimated at 1400 hp in 1986, lower output and better longevity with a reduction in boost.

For sure. Go back and look at the Chevy motor in the Chapparel race car in the 60s.

You are comparing smog choked street engines to full out race engines. The kind of HP they are talking about is impressive but certainly not unheard of in a race motor. Look at the Toyota turbocharged four cylinder from IMSA in the Gurney Eagle. That 2.1L made 750HP in endurance form with a air restrictor. It was reputed to be able to make over 1000HP in sprint configuration. That was in 1992.

Hanni_0176 11-15-2013 07:49 PM

550 hp out of a 1.6L... I'm assuming the turbo lag on that thing would be horrendous.

Jeez, chill out.

The359 11-16-2013 01:12 PM

The man behind the project, Al Solaroli, has been trying to con people into this "Adiabatic process" for engines for years.

Here is the RTU company website: http://www.rtugroup.com/

They claim to have developed a 2.5 liter five-cylinder naturally aspirated Audi engine that can develop 800hp and 1000Nm of torque, with peak horsepower at 2500rpms. Good luck finding any proof of that engine actually running that power though, this video shows a lot of cellos, people tearing down and rebuilding an engine, "censored ports", and a ridiculous dyno sheet, but no real proof of anything.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVnM8z1nX4k"]RTU eFone - Super Motor - YouTube[/ame]

For a read on Solaroli's previous endeavour in sports car racing, in which he conned Porsche out of one RS Spyder before Porsche had to take him to court to try and get it back since he never paid up despite a "$50 million investment without sponsors", see here.

In other words, this FA20 probably does not work, and will never see an LMP car.

mike the snake 11-16-2013 03:29 PM

You are going to try and get someone banned for posting something without searching? WTF

I can think of many other infractions much more worth getting banned for.
