UEL headers

what are the benefits of installing UEL headers?

ft_sjo 11-12-2013 07:53 AM

Generically, removal of the primary cat.

Specifically, the different exhaust sound you get from UEL.

jdm-az-fuk 11-12-2013 08:02 AM

Refer to the already 1 million post started about this.

Orgasmic sound, benefits of an unrestricted header improving flow and performance when properly tuned. Also many of them remove the cat in the header. Unless you're pushing over 400 whp, I wouldn't worry too much about differences with EL and UEL. If sound is your thing, go UEL. If you want to squeeze every little ounce of horsepower you can, then EL is for you. Definitely do some research because different designs affect the final outcome and quality as well.

There's tons of posts all over this forum about this.

Kelbyat07 11-12-2013 09:06 AM

Improvement of the boxer sound and more horsepower with a tune. Those are just some primary reasons.

s2d4 11-12-2013 09:15 AM

you get to tell your mates that you'd spent some money on your car, so by extension you must be cool.

DKEddy90 11-12-2013 09:24 AM

Besides the fact that the power difference between uel and el is almost non existent

some people like the sound. if you're not familiar i'd watch some youtube videos to get a sense of it, as it's a bit of an acquired taste lol.

Ok, very thanzs;) The sound of the video ...... I am not convinced ..... I guess that sound better a resonated catback.
Thanks again;) delve deeper into the subject, browsing the forum. What I do see is that JDL seems to offer more quality construction in headers.
robotic sorry for my English

FR-S Matt 11-12-2013 10:13 AM

Boxer rumble for the win. I LOVE the header and this is my first Subaru sounding car. Won't be my last either. :)

pepe 11-12-2013 10:15 AM

I love the sound rumble, but in the video it sounds ...... you exhaust system used in combination with the headers?

JDL UEL Headers, JDL Over Pipe, JDL Catted Front pipe, Stock Mid-Pipe, Nameless Axle Back Delete.

Yeah, the noise to speed ratio is kinda crappy. I was running Just the axleback delete for a few months and I loved the sound and the fact it wasn't that loud. After the full exhaust that's not really an option anymore. The stock catback is back on till I get the catback I want.

pepe 11-12-2013 12:22 PM

......slow motion efect :)
Very thanzs ;) The nameless axle back, ist unresonated system?

it's a personal preference. personally i think uel's sound 'farty' or 'blatty' i guess you could say. it was my least favorite trait of my wrx when i had it. i certainly wouldn't add that on purpose.

but to each his own, it's entirely subjective.

pepe 11-12-2013 01:29 PM

sorry but I'm not English ..... . Blatty ro farty meaning?

FR-S Matt 11-12-2013 01:50 PM

EL - Fart Can

UEL - Taco Bell Fart

You can't win unless you have at least 8 cylinders.

it makes a 'blat blat blat blat' sound... not smooth, sounds like someone having the hershey squirts at WOT.

again it's entirely subjective. some prefer it. it's a matter of taste.

SirBrass 11-12-2013 01:58 PM

Not exactly, a good boxer sound with UELs should sound more like "whummmm, grumble, grumble, grumble".

I like the way the boxer sounds on the JDL UEL. It's a unique sound that doesn't sound like every Honda on the road. Or miata, or integra.

tennisfreak 11-12-2013 02:43 PM

The biggest benefit of a UEL will be company who made the header. They will be benefiting from your business :)

More-so than anything else, hp gains from UEL headers come from the removal of the catalytic converter and accompanying tune.

Just slapping a UEL header on, especially with a high flow cat, is not going to get you much more than a handful of hp.

I guess I'm in the minority, dislike the UEL sound. Sorta sounds like my old 911 when it was misfiring on two cylinders.

Me too, it sounds like a miss on any bigger engine. I had an old chevelle with a built 327 that liked to fling off number one and number two cylinder spark plug wires. The unequal length headers totally remind me of that when I hear them. I prefer the equal length header sound on the twins. If it was a real subaru it would have 4wd. It doesn't require that thrummy boxer burble. I know many disagree with me on this. We can disagree and still be friends, right?! Just my opinion.

If you're gonna list TRD license plate frame, might as well list your stickers/decals too.

No bc it's auto.

I also am annoyed to watch the driver so "engaged" driving this car. I am sorry, but not being MT, a driver cannot be as connected to the car, with the AT/paddle shifting.

pepe 11-12-2013 07:05 PM

I mean if the fact of putting a exhaust 3 "adversely affects normal car without turbo

Why is removing the primary cat a benefit? I thought the primary cat is required for state inspection and prevents CEL?
