My $74 Spoiler Project

So I really wanted to get a subtle spoiler/lip for my car. That said, I'm a cheap bastard and I don't like to spend much money. I looked around at the options for a while and I decided that I really wasn't in the mood to pay $400-500 for such a small piece. The solution? Pick up an inexpensive one, and paint/install it myself. I should also note that this is the first piece of body work I have ever done, so I was a bit worried. ANYWAYS, here are my results. I spent $47 on paint/primer/clear to finish it up. I think it looks nice and the color match was great for a rattle can:

Looks like a TRD spoiler.

briang0901 11-10-2013 02:50 PM

@SkitterSkotter bro you could easily make a business out of selling those for slightly more but cheaper than the 400$ ones...just saying. Looks good bro!

Good job with the paint. However, my question to you as follow since you start this project with unprinted spoiler,

1. Did you use adhesion promoter before you put on the primer?
2. And did you use the primer at all before the base coat?

If you don't use the listed above, I am not sure how long your spoiler paint will stick on.

I sanded the bumper when I first got it so it was smooth as glass. Next I used two coats of a primer meant to bond to that type of plastic. then I did 4 lays of base coat and 3 layers of clear. I'm pretty sure the paint won't be falling off.

peri.Laynz 11-10-2013 03:24 PM

OP, how does this spoiler mount on? Holes or adhesive? It might've been mentioned somewhere and I just overlooked it.

chenshuo 11-10-2013 03:43 PM

wow that is a great job! I didn't expect a $75 spoiler from ebay and turn out looking OEM.

driftagoon 11-10-2013 03:55 PM

This (@ OP) just opened up a whole lotta possibilities for my car! Looks like the seller also got body kits!!!
I was considering rocket bunny / five axis kits..

It'd be awesome to get these kits and paint em body kits myself :party0030:

#944_10_Series_FRS 11-10-2013 04:02 PM

There is a 6pcs kit on junkbay for $445. I am not sure about the fit but it looks exactly what I have from Five Axis.

Would you mind telling us more about the paint (specifically, brands) that you used? I am looking at purchasing their TRD style front bumper and side skits, so it would be very helpful to know. Thanks!

whitefrs 11-10-2013 05:20 PM

I did few projects and the paint matched very well. Call them and talk to Skip at ext 109. He is very helpful and should be able to give you advise on your project.

I installed the Five Axis lip, rear valances & diffuser onto mine. I did paint them with paints I bought from automotive touch up. As you can see, I have not put the side skirts on mine yet.. they will be going on soon.

Can I request more pics of the body colored rear diffuser? Or link?

Looks fantastic.

This is what I bought. I paid $79.00 few months ago and now it is only $65. It comes unpainted and you will have to paint it.

I got one for $65 on ebay. Had it painted at a local shop and mounted it myself. May one day replace it with a Carsmo...

Byebye 11-10-2013 11:07 PM

Amazing work for such a low cost.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid to paint it?

I've used them before and actually didn't have the best luck with their paint matching. I'm curious where the OP got his paint as his seems to be a pretty good match. Also very curious about the clear he used, since it seems to have essentially no orange peel.

I paid $150 to have it painted. That was the going price for most all of the shops that I called. The exception was MAACO, which quoted $100. I did not use them as they had really bad reviews.

I love these spoilers, too bad I have a limited and they have holes in the trunk :/

FRSHunter 11-13-2013 04:23 AM

Are knockoff body parts fitting better than they used to lets say 5 years ago? It looks like the spoiler fits very well and the only real difference between this and the TRD is that the TRD one has that weather stripping thing around it.

Depends on who makes them. I also got a replica spoiler and got it painted from my friend to do it.

I got the Version Select TRD knockoff when there wasn't any other good options and it fit like shit. Stay away from their products.

Did you sand between coats of paint and clear coat. If so what grit?

I did not sand between coats of paint and clear. I only sanded after the primer was on, though it really wasn't needed as it was so smooth.

Joe-G 11-17-2013 12:06 AM

Good Job! Mind if I ask how many cans each of primer, base, and clear you ended up using?

Thanks! It was 1 can of primer, 2 cans of basecoat and 1 can of clear.
