Real world MPG?

My SWP is only about 400 miles. I got about 27 local and 34 highway. Wondering what kind of numbers you guys can get out there, esp. after break in. I am mildly satisfied by the number. If it is 36, I would be very happy.

Jac 11-05-2013 09:49 PM

I averaged 41.6 MPG on a trip to Maine from Boston. Not bad.

dbrandt01 11-05-2013 09:50 PM

If I drive easy, I get around 29mpg. I like having a bit more fun with going from lights since I figured out how to drive a manual. I'm getting around 25 now.

suffelch 11-05-2013 10:00 PM

I have not reset my in-dash monitor in all the 8800 miles on the car. It reads 27.7. That's with all kinds of driving mixed in. Has anyone established how accurate it is?

I drive "spirited" but mostly short trips less than 20 miles.
I get about 31 MPG on 91 at 5000 feet alt.
I havent had it on a trip longer than ~120 miles.

My wife gets the same in her Passat TDI but in very short trips less than 5 miles.
When she travels long dist. she gets 54 MPG

Chauntalei 11-05-2013 10:27 PM

Average is 27-28mpg for me. I just did a long highway drive a few weeks ago and got 32.

BRZnut 11-05-2013 10:41 PM

27.7 local city driving/ 42-44 on the interstate. Impressive

PandaBRZ 11-05-2013 11:51 PM

Screw MPG. Rev the nuts off of it.

kuhlka 11-06-2013 12:05 AM

Best I've gotten with my AT was 34mpg over July weekend in packed traffic in the mountains of PA. Most of the time I average around 30. Seems like the MPG gets better with miles. We'll see how it goes after tuning. Hoping to get a good MPG map so I can switch to putt-putt mode on the freeway for road trips.

uEih 11-06-2013 05:06 AM

I usually get around 25, 27-30 if I'm boring. I don't know how anyone can keep it at or over 28 at all with this car. Gotta have fun in the car sometimes.

I don't even know how this is possible lol. :iono:

davidchoi 11-06-2013 05:10 AM

I rarely use freeways. I'm lucky to get 22 mpg. :/

brianL. 11-06-2013 09:06 AM

I don't care about the mpg as I do the smiles per gallons!!

Go back to your Prius forum. Your Prius is not a BRZ.

Marcoscrdo 11-06-2013 01:52 PM

I dont understand how you guys get such good mpg. I watch my mpgs while driving and drive easy. The average still stays around 26, i feel like its broke lol

Don't draft trucks - the risk isn't worth the extra efficiency.

wrb 11-06-2013 02:29 PM

if i ride nicely... i get 28-29 avg (70% local, 30% hwy)

but that really never happens...
so i get around 26

FR-S, but still applicable. You can see the tank-by-tank blow in my Owner's Journal OP here, but the bottom line is:

Lifetime: 27,950 Miles Driven at 32.54 MPG

Antheezy 11-06-2013 03:43 PM

I get about 26mpg. Im curious any of you got bolt ons like intake downpipe and overpipe/ exhaust and get noticeable increase?

wizzardofboz 11-06-2013 03:52 PM

29.9mpg 12,000 mile average, DC Beltway commuting (cruising AM and worlds largest parking lot PM) stock.

Guff 11-06-2013 03:57 PM

In the city, I tend to get 22-24, and on the highway I get 34-36. My last tank, I averaged 18.1, but that was with AutoX, a lot of backroad driving, and occasional sliding.

s0sl0w 11-06-2013 04:30 PM

You people must drive like my mom.

I get 19-24. Usually more towards the lower end of that range.

sklimo 11-06-2013 04:52 PM

25 here

Yeah I average around 24...these kids are throttle shy.

Rock chips are one risk, yes (as well as cracked windshields), but also the increased risk of an accident. If you're close enough to improve your gas mileage significantly, you're also close enough to significantly decrease your time to react to any changes in the truck's path, and you're also close enough that the truck driver probably can't see you.

kuhlka 11-06-2013 05:23 PM

Keep in mind fuel quality varies from state-to-state, terrain makes a huge difference, and sloppy WOT driving kills economy while not garnering much added performance. You're going to have garbage MPG if you're hauling ass through canyons in SoCal vs straight flat highway across Ohio. 30 MPG is easy with this engine if you're not WOT all day long.

If you're running boost on an inefficient map, goodbye fuel economy. My stock STI rarely gets better than 20 MPG.

Ganthrithor 11-06-2013 05:40 PM

I get low 30's on the highway (30-32) and low 20's when I thrash it around backroads. I think the onboard computer was saying 26.5 MPG average or something a few weeks back (I've done a lot of road-trip miles on this car though-- a thousand miles coming out from Colorado plus I've been up and down between SB and the bay area and SB and LA a bunch of times this summer). Highway mileage is pretty good for something NA and fun to drive IMHO. There are definitely more efficient engines out there, though. I think the N54 on my dad's 135 gets 28 highway or something if you drive it with a light foot, and that car makes about twice the power and almost 3x the torque of ours... Still, it's not bad. It still uses less gas than my GTI did.

Nah, just prefer a heavy wallet to an empty gas tank ;)

3500+ lbs, AWD, boost and 3 differentials will do that.

Clear bra isn't going to save you when something big gets knocked up or even save your windshield. I always get out of the way of big trucks whether it's the side or behind, I just don't feel safe around them with this small car. I understand driving behind a truck at a distance but if you're talking about drafting behind a truck that's pretty close.

Also a light foot isn't going to get you 42 MPG, that's impossible with this car, I don't know where people are pulling those numbers from. Unless they reset their average MPG while driving and let it run the average while they're cruising, then that's not accurate at all.

hanabie 11-06-2013 07:00 PM

retards sticking behind large trucks. You must have not watched Final Destination.

hanabie 11-06-2013 07:14 PM

I personally hate drafting behind the truck. It annoys the driver as well as slow me down. If I do really care about mpg, I would not buy this car in the first place.

Get real people!
