Buy wheels now or wait?
Just got my BRZ and want to get some wheels on it ASAP. Now the problem I find myself in. Should I go ahead and buy some or wait for some potential holiday "special" deal? I've found some at great prices and I really don't see it getting much better. Someone just brought it up to me tonight and it made sense that there might be seasonal savings. :iono: Any input would be great!

Also keep checking Craigslist for a potential deal there.
Be patient if money matters to you. |
A decent performance gain can be made by replacing the stock tyres with better ones.
The stock 17 x 7 rims are fine for street use. |
check the local classified section from sites like nasioc.com. i always see subaru guys trying to sell or trade their wheels on there. RPF1s are plentiful and you'll see used Volks/Works/Advans pop up for pretty spankin deals too.
craigslist is also a good place to start. :) |
I'd say buy wheels and lower at the same time, wheels without lowering doesn't look good. If that matters to you
|
thanks for all the great replies everyone!:thanks:

I think my car looks good on 18s not lowered
It would look better lowered but I think it is 10x better than stock in looks :iono: |
wait for SEMA 2013!! Then you might have better options to choose.
Or some rich kids get bored and want something new. You can get them used for cheap ;) Dont buy that word, "holiday special sale". It is marketing gimmick. There is nothing like that unless there is price drop from the manufacturer. Wheels are not electronics. These vendors are not huge vendors. Most are just drop shippers. I hope you know what I'm saying. They are not cleaning out popular wheels maybe for those non popular ones. They try to get rid them out. Again, they probably only have few sets sitting in the inventory. You either buy them used or buy new ones when you are ready. I doubt you could find significantly cheaper during Bfday. Good luck. Yes, lower your car at the same time. It makes huge difference if you want the flush look and no rubbing or poking issues if you are getting aggressive specs. Last but not least! You will be watching good deals for tires! Yes tirerack and Discounttires might have really good deals on tires during bfday. Tires are expensive... No kidding. |
You guys are making this way too complicated.
Find a set of wheels you like? Call your preferred vendor and order a set. Mount them and enjoy life. Go for a scenic drive with your best friend. Make memories! |
A drop and spacers to flush out the stock rims will look 100x better than stock height and aftermarket rims. You could even plastidip the stock rims too which changes their look entirely.
|
Hit up one of the many great wheel vendors on this site, they will hook you up!

Take your time and do your homework. Wheel size, diameter and offset will determine how flush they sit on your car. There are countless combinations to reference on this forum. You also need to think about the size tires you want to mount since I highly doubt you're remounting the stock garbage tires.
Ideally, the first time you mount the wheels/tires on your car it would be nice to stand back and say "nailed it!" |
Try an autocross event if you can. Sadly I bought a used set of RPF1's w/BFG 245/40/17 rivals and they were so sticky I couldn't break loose:wub:
Had I tried on the stockers I would have learned more about the limits. Needless to say I'm extremely happy with the upgrade. |
@TRobb something to consider -- vintage wheels! It's fun finding older stuff and refurbishing it.

thanks again for all the replies everyone! I think im just going to jump on some wheels and see if any tire specials come around!

I go to Discount Tire (Tire Rack is also good) for all of my tire and wheel needs and purchased a set of Enkei GTC01's 17 X7.5. They, Discount Tire, had pricing that bested most other pricing I researched at the time.
With the 7.5 width one can go with a little more rubber when the original tires need replacing. The Enkei's that I got also have the same offset as original. This keeps me technically 'stock' with better looks and better rubber when I get the Michelin's I want. Note: I suggest you carefully research doing any other modification to the car, such as 'lowering' until such time as you see what new wheels and tires can do for you. Making too many changes at one time will result in your not knowing what each change had done for you especially if you want to stay 'stock'. Say "expensive". Attachment 56204 |

Not trying to thread jack. I hope the OP is interested...
Yes the ride is slightly stiffer, but the springs settle slightly and get slightly softer over the first several days. After a few day you won't even notice. "Stoked you will be" yoda voice. |
