Do you ever feel like an asshole for coming to a complete stop?

Around here damn near nobody comes to a complete stop at stop signs. I personally have made it a habit to come to a complete stop at stop signs on public roadways including my neighborhood.

I have been rear ended twice at stop signs by people who were expecting me to roll through and make a right turn, as they were looking for oncoming traffic and not my brake lights.

So I'm actually kinda paranoid when coming to a stopsign where most people make a right turn.

Anyhow given the prevailing behavior of most motorists at stop signs around here I sometimes feel like a **** for a obeying the rules of the road, go figure. Even got honked at and flicked off for complete stops and strictly following the speed limit in my neighborhood once, though the guy was tailgating me.:D

dem00n 10-30-2013 09:52 PM

Yes, but i still do it. A lot of shit happens when you don't stop. You'd be surprised...

Don't care what anyone says, you're an asshole if you don't use your turn signal when need be.

Evil Jesus 10-30-2013 09:54 PM

Fuck no! I come to a complete stop every time and look left-right-left.

I've found that coming almost to a stop a couple meters ahead of the actual sign and then rolling up to it slowly and then coming to a complete stop gives the people behind enough warning where they don't hit you.

If someone wants to be ridiculous and get all bent out of shape because you came to a full stop they can get fucked.

n2oinferno 10-30-2013 09:59 PM

No, and you should not. If they hit you, THEY'RE the asshole. If a cop saw you roll through, you'd get pulled over.

People yell and scream, flail their hands around, and tailgate me so hard I can't see their headlights when they're behind me because I'm doing the speed limit or slightly over, in a no-passing zone. Sorry strange lady who's freaking out behind me and has been following me for miles... That animal just ran right out in front of my car, and my instinct was to brake. On that note, I generally keep my cool and don't ever brake check people because the last thing I want is someone hitting me, but damn if she didn't have it coming to her..

Kelbyat07 10-30-2013 10:48 PM

I only roll when there is no one in sight. You should always stop completely when there are cars around or else you will fuck up everyone.

Ozzman 10-30-2013 11:10 PM

I have no intentions of losing my habit of coming to complete stops, but it's amazing how few do.

JOSI 10-30-2013 11:29 PM

Hahaha. .. WTF ... when the hell did it become not cool to fully stop. I dont think that idea has ever even crossed my mind.

Allch Chcar 10-30-2013 11:48 PM

Yes and I do it anyway.

sklimo 10-31-2013 09:23 AM

I am an asshole so I stop fully and don't care.

Here in California, stop signs are "stoptional". If you have enough time and distance to see all the cross traffic, there's no reason to. Same goes for right turn on red.

Steve201brz 10-31-2013 01:16 PM

I take my time rolling up to stop signs & turning. I shouldn't have to gun it to merge in local traffic. If the irrational driver behind me gets pissed off then I just consider it a win.

I didn't make the laws. So you gotta...

I apologize for nothing. Even how lame I choose to be

I agree.. I always get pissed when people pull out when they shouldn't.. Idk if I'm the only one but I believe I shouldn't have to brake when someone pulls out and merges in front of me..
And I won't pull out and cause people have to brake when they shouldn't need to.. .02 cents

Stop = Stop
Yield = not stop, but make sure there is no traffic before merging.

If someone rear end your car, it is his/her fault. You are not an asshole to follow the rule.

SirBrass 11-19-2013 12:40 PM

I sometimes ignore yield signs if there's clearly no traffic to worry about, but always stop fully for stop signs.

Yep, you're all assholes. Stopping at a stop sign is like stopping at red lights. Next time I'm just gonna smack into you because I totally disagree with any stop sign.

LMAO!!

rice_classic 11-19-2013 02:12 PM

If you don't come to a complete stop around here you get your photo taken along with a short video and it comes to you in the mail with a bill for $127.

Uh Yield signs exist so you don't have to stop.

ZionsWrath 11-19-2013 02:29 PM

Honestly I usually slow to 5, drag up the clutch, look for traffic, then drive away. I rarely "stop" but come close :D

Chee-Hu 11-19-2013 04:18 PM

No, I don't. I could give a rats ass what the person behind me feels. It's much better than getting a ticket and/or not seeing a car flying down the street.

Nevermore 11-21-2013 02:38 PM

I roll through some of them, but my rolling stop actually takes longer than a normal full stop because I inch it very slowly and check every direction at least three times. I'm not sure what category I fall into, but either way I don't feel bad at all regardless of how I go through the intersection.

Now, that random time my hand decides to apply some muscle memory and put on a turn signal even though I'm going straight? Yeah, I feel like an asshole then.

Yield sign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Right, but usually I do slow down sometimes at yields so I can make sure the potentially on-coming traffic stopped at the near light is staying stopped. That is, unless there's obviously no traffic then I ignore the yield & don't slow down.

I should note that I normally see yield signs on median-separated on-ramp merge lanes instead of the turn being part of a stop light.

I always stop.

I used to live on an intersection with a four way stop and I always got mad at people who rolled right through. If I were outside, I would shake my fist at them.

Laws are laws. The moment you got your liscence you consented to following the laws of the road (whether you like them or not).

ChiefG 11-28-2013 11:55 AM

Call me silly, but I stop at stop signs, use my turn signals - even to signal lane changes, and don't cross solid white or yellow lines. The assholes are the ones who don't do these things.

However, I do exceed the speed limit on interstates. IMO, speed limits are too low just about everywhere.

I don't text or talk on the (handheld) phone while driving either.

SirBrass 11-28-2013 12:19 PM

People who don't signal lane changes in traffic piss me off the most. I've nearly ridden up a few inattentive rears b/c they (without bothering to signal or look) changed into my lane while I was boosting hard near WOT to pass them on the left.

It's the biggest reason I want a loud, piercing, obnoxious train horn.

My biggest peeve is people who are texting or talking hand-held. They're usually the ones going the speed limit or under in the hammer-lane, or they're not maintaining good lane control.

You do NOT want a train horn on a FRS!! Trust me, there's no room!! They're freakin' huge and you have to have a compressor and air tank. What you do want is a small, self-contained air horn or two.

I've pulled two people over for driving under the speed limit in the left (passing) lane and one for not using turn signals (and the idiot was tailgating me). The idiot says "is it really a law here that you have to use turn signals?" Uhm, yes... They don't add those so they look pretty.

Oh and I know here it's illegal to honk your horn unless it's to alert another to avoid an accident. Hah
On my motorcycles I never had time to "reach" for the horn button so I always revved. So I always had to have aftermarket exhaust! It's amazing how many people I could scare the crap out of that way lol

Dave-ROR 12-06-2013 01:35 AM

Not at all. That would also require me to give a shit what other drivers think though.

It amazes me to no end the lack of knowledge people have about traffic laws in their own jurisdiction.

FastWhite 12-09-2013 01:03 PM

Plain money issue for me. My TWO stop sign tickets at the SAME stop sign trump any honking at me.
THAT A...,!&:$hole can pay my tickets.
I AM STOPPING.

How about from a different angle. You can turn right at a red light as long as there's no sign posted saying otherwise. For the most part you have to stop and look anyways, just to be safe, but there's plenty of instances where the line of sight is clear and no one is coming as you approach the light. Red light acts like a stop sign in this instance. Do you stop? Or keep on rolling since it's clear?

ZionsWrath 12-09-2013 01:59 PM

Personally I slow to less than 5mph and only make a full stop if someone is approaching/stopped at the same intersection. This is what I see from 100% of other drivers on the road as well.

FastWhite 12-09-2013 02:14 PM

Agreed. Same as driving 100 mph on a straight rd, ie Texas roads, for 50 miles.
Now are you breaking law?
Are you endangering anyone?
Is your car designed for it (pet peeve)
Now let's put that to the cop as he has you handcuffed for being a super speeder, reckless endangerment, impounding your car.
It gets to the point of "IS IT WORTH IT"
In the eyes of the law, the letter of the law,
YOU ARE SCREWED.
You got caught.
It is breaking the law.
As a side note, I cruised the streets of Calgary at 100 mph, looking for a ticket. I was bored.
It comes to the time honored phrase
"STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES".
Rant done.

Nope. STOP does not Slightly Tap On Pedal, it means come to a complete stop, check your surroundings, proceed after right of way has been confirmed. I'd rather have the dude behind me honk than get: a) a ticket; or b) into an accident.

Evil Jesus 12-10-2013 03:42 AM

Agreed. Stop is stop. It's so easy to do.

asia_minor 12-10-2013 04:30 AM

In my old manual gearbox car it wouldn't go into first without me coming to a complete stand-still so it became habit really.
