2014 corolla looks like BRZ

i saw a commercial for the 2014 corolla, and was surprised how much the front grill, fog light placement, and wheels remind me of my BRZ.

anyone else think so? makes me wonder if the twins project is being used by toyota to leverage their bread and butter. kind of like how ford used aston martin styling to boost the fusion

here's the commercial:

....?

ericmpena 10-29-2013 07:37 AM

I see what you're saying....but they still look very very different.

FiRStsc10n 10-29-2013 07:40 AM

Perhaps, I'm sure its the color that boosts the resemblance.

Note this is the Corolla S, the CE & LE look different.

During the documentary of making the GT86/BRZ, they showed that Toyota has an inventory of wheels to pick from, some of them are pretty cool and would be awesome as options for our twins. These wheels may have even been in that inventory because they are the same 17x7 5x100 two-tone that they were looking for.

Burrcold 10-29-2013 08:04 AM

I don't see it.

SoCal909 10-29-2013 08:06 AM

To me it looked like the FRS sedan concept

industrial 10-29-2013 09:01 AM

Yeah I see what your saying. I think any similarity will vanish if they were side by side though. I'm sure the corolla is a giant sedan that dwarfs the brz in every way without any of the subtle but significant styling elements we take for granted in the brz. Things like the roofline, fender bulges and hood creases that make the brz so sexy.

So it's like our car is a sexy girl in size 0 gap jeans and a xs gap sweater.
That corolla is a homey girl wearing the same type and color jeans in size 10 and the same sweater in L.

nalc 10-29-2013 09:30 AM

It seems to me like the newest generation Camry and Corolla and a couple Hyndais have a resemblance to the BRZ from a distance, with a trapezoidal grille with clipped corners with a moustache (although all of them have an upper grille above it, unlike the BRZ)

Funny how the Subaru twin looks more like the other Toyota models than the Toyota/Scion twin.

2013GTRNate 10-29-2013 09:37 AM

That style started with the R35 GT-R. A lot of automotive companies have been using their own spin of the GT-Rs style cues.

Agreed.

But I will say the redesigned Corolla definitely was much needed for the model and should sell well.

Shinryu 10-29-2013 10:55 AM

Aside from the mustache, the front bumper seems more inspired by the Toyota Avalon to me.

Really? The 86/FR-S front bumper is very similar to the design used on certain models of 2013 Camry and 2012 Corolla, just a bit more aggressive.

fitcious 10-29-2013 11:55 AM

if you look closely to the Corolla's front grill (the black horizontal one), it looks and feels very similar to the BRZ's

Marcoscrdo 10-29-2013 01:03 PM

I think ive seen one of these this morning, they have a led strip too. Doesnt look anything like the twins imo, a lot of cars have that "mustache" look. Like the mazda 3 lol

Diode Dynamics 10-29-2013 01:12 PM

The Corolla and BRZ look about the same as Snooki and this orkish thing from Lord of the Rings

I think of any of the 2014 Models from Toyota and Scion that have been inspired by the FRS/BRZ models design is the new 2014 Scion TC.

http://media.caranddriver.com/images...s-1280x782.jpg

BRZer86 10-29-2013 01:24 PM

^^^^^^Agree 100%

The TC is more similar to the twins, specifically the FR-S. Look at the front bumper of an FR-S and the front bumper of the new TC.

I do not see it in the Corolla. The unfortunate thing for Toyota is that they've had poor crash safety ratings on the new RAV4 and the new Corolla.

muffinz 10-29-2013 03:06 PM

I see the resemblance somewhat...but its only from that trapezoidal black space composed of the lower grill and crash bumper beam cover.

There are a tonnnnnnnnn of cars doing this same exact styling cue nowadays...but it looks best on ours :party0030:

The main difference is this:

Our cars have that trapezoidal black area...but they also have a cohesive theme that flows through the car. The lines flow from front to back.

All the other cars (carolla, new fusion, etc) have that trap black area...but are completely disjointed in design.

Our cars look cool from any angle.

Look at a fusion from the side. Its hideous. Look at the back...garbage.

Basically what we have is a fully styled car vs cars with bits and pieces of styling thrown together trying to work.

Its like wearing a nice tuxedo vs wearing a tuxedo top, corduroy shorts, boat shoes, and a cowboy hat.

R.S-HawK 10-29-2013 03:16 PM

Not even remotely...

Also, I had a Corolla S as a loaner from the dealership while I was getting my tires installed.

Awful car. Cheap interior, engine sounds like a vacuum and has absolutely no throttle response.

Kelbyat07 10-29-2013 03:23 PM

Just saw 2 on the road today. In pictures they do seem a little similar, but on the road they look like an average sedan.

DoomsdayJesus 10-29-2013 08:54 PM

Nope. Not seeing it at all.

Dorb 10-29-2013 09:13 PM

It's the blue color makes it seem like WRB.

Kwisak 10-30-2013 01:08 AM

I see a little in the fogs, but that it for me

You're right, I had the Avalon in mind when I was typing that post. Trapezoidal grille with the top wider than the bottom, with the top corners rounded off, and horizontal bars is very BRZ-like.

Speedy000 11-03-2013 01:03 PM

!?!?!?!?! the veloster and genesis also look like a brz.

Wes 11-03-2013 05:14 PM

Its kind of funny if you look at it the models, one of them has this fake carbon fiber on the grille mustache part, and the tail lights have that little "fin" thing like on our cars too. This car is actually not bad, the seats are pretty nice too surprisingly.

asphaltkyle 11-03-2013 05:17 PM

All the BRZ owners are offended by this observation. Now you have to reassure them that they bought a sports car and not a compact sedan.

7thgear 11-05-2013 09:02 AM

my bathroom has this green marble floor with very interesting web of lines all through out (probably natural stone), and sometimes, when i'm on the shitter, i can see different shapes within those lines, everything from fields of grass, to space shuttles, to people's faces, and just general works of art.

then i remember that it's a fucking floor and go about my day

The BRZ is a compact sedan that's so compact it doesn't have the rear doors.

Bristecom 11-05-2013 03:12 PM

Well I have to say, I saw this car coming head on the other day and mistook it for a BRZ. As it got closer, it became obvious it was not a BRZ but there clearly are some similarities. Although I think the design is purely coincidence.

I sure hope so. The Corolla is one of Toyota's "Bread and butter" cars that makes them so much of their money. If the Corolla and the Impreza and Forester keep selling really well, then Subaru and Toyota will have more $$ to sink into cars like ours.

daiheadjai 11-13-2013 11:55 PM

Hell - even the new Avalon (which actually looks pretty good) has a foglamp housing and front end which do remind me of the FR-S...

I know what you mean, my brother recently bought the 2014 Corolla S, I didn't like it either. The plastic on the doors just feels extremely cheap and it does not sound exciting at all. The only think he regrets is not buying a package higher for the nicer wheels.

subiestyle 03-31-2014 01:52 PM

You've pissed off the BRZ owners.

The Corolla does look a bit like the BRZ. Obviously, the height of both cars are different, but if the Corolla was shrunk down lower, it would look very similar to the BRZ.

daiheadjai 03-31-2014 03:19 PM

Actually I've noticed that Toyota likes to milk the hell out of their good designs (to the point that it looks tacky).
The 2002 ES300 featured very swept back headlamps that reminded me more than a little of the 7th gen Celica - and it absolutely looked horrid on the Lexus. For awhile, it seemed like they would try to sweep the head lamps back on everything (mixed success).

The new Avalon has some FRS-like styling cues (and I happen to think it looks very good for a family sedan), and not surprisingly, the newest tC and Corolla also ape the FRS in some ways.

Dark 03-31-2014 08:34 PM

What a striking resemblance? Just kidding, they look different, Nice try though.

strat61caster 03-31-2014 09:59 PM

oh em gee

unified design language across a company!

You don't see Apple fanboi's bitching about how the new iphone shares similar cues to the new macbook. Get over it, they're going to look like they're in the same family, even Kate Upton can have a neckbeard brother.

continuecrushing 04-01-2014 11:04 PM

Um, the new corolla looks nasty, and not once have I ever thought it looks like a brz.

The only thing the corolla has on us is that it's just about as fast in a straight line.

Actually, probably faster lol

daiheadjai 04-02-2014 12:13 AM

While I do think it looks better than previous Corollas, something about the LED headlights just seems so cheap/aftermarket to me... The way the lights look make it seem like some DIY job sourced from Walmart...

Sasquachulator 04-07-2014 12:46 AM

as stated before, a ton of cars are using this similar styling theme.

The 2014 Scion tC facelift is the only one that aped the FRS's look. They even said so.

The 2014 Corolla is more akin to the 2013 Avalon redesign. At least its modern looking, unlike the last generation which was old fashioned looking. Oh and the non-S variant (with a different grille) looks like a sedan version of the prefacelited Scion tC.

You also can just go way back to that FT-HS concept and see where Toyota's current styling trend started off. I think it got fully applied on the 2012 Yaris first, the Rav4 next, then the Avalon, Camry, FRS (somewhere in there), and then the Corolla.

In terms of that Subaru BRZ face grille? I think Mazda did it first with their previous generation of smiley face cars.
