Sunroof on FRS/BRZ

Hi guys,

I've been a long time lurker on this forum.

I am still debating if I like the FRS or BRZ more...different aspects of each one attracts me.

But anyways, the only thing that bothers me is the lack of a sunroof..even as an option. I know it adds weight and costs to it..but it shouldn't affect performance by that much? if an RX8 can have it..why not the FRS/BRZ? i would imagine BRZ would offer it in their top end model..but disappointment.

Do you guys think it might be offer in the future as an option?

IceCreamMan 04-14-2012 05:39 PM

If you are buying the brz/frs, you wouldn't get it with a sunroof. For a car that touts its super low CoG, adding weight to the top of the car would be an abomination. If you really want one, could always just get the roofless one that is coming out at some point....

Genomaxter 04-14-2012 05:54 PM

I dont want one, ever.

I have one on my current Celica, I dont use it. Its a waste of space and weight.

Exactly. It eats away headroom, adds weight, and adds unnecessary cost if a standard item. A sunroof would be out of place on a car like this; a convertible would be more befitting a la Mazda's Miata.

switchlanez 04-14-2012 06:10 PM

The low CoG target was the primary reason the designers axed the sunroof option.

My first car (also a Celica) had a sunroof and I thought it was neat at first. But I hardly used it even living in SoCal; opening the windows all the way provided ample open air effect. The sunroof rails became squeaky/collected dust which I had to clean regularly so I just stopped using it altogether. I'm not a convertible fan, but I had an MR2 Spyder and appreciated going top down in the San Diego sun once in a while. A sunroof is nothing compared to a convertible. So I say either get the hardtop or wait for the convertible. "Built by passion, not by committee." Sunroof is something a committee would want but passion says it's a useless compromise between a hardtop and convertible.

Sasquachulator 04-14-2012 06:24 PM

its also probably a bit difficult to get a working normal sized sunroof with that 'double bubble' roof design.

I have one but i also hardly use it.
Its nice to get the sun shining from the roof when its sunny though, to brighten up the cabin.

Allch Chcar 04-14-2012 06:53 PM

The roof is too curved for a sunroof.

:D

Bristecom 04-14-2012 07:17 PM

Yeah, a sunroof/moonroof is unlikely on this car. I do like moonroofs because they let more light in and you can pop them open for a little more airflow but I'd probably rather not have one on a car like this. Besides, mine keeps popping out and rattling even though I've tried to tighten it and realign it several times. So it's one less thing that can go wrong.

IceCreamMan 04-14-2012 08:50 PM

I actually have one in my SRT4 and like others have said, it hardly ever gets used so I'm perfectly fine not ever having one again

Grip Ronin 04-15-2012 09:23 PM

both of my cars have working sunroofs and i very rarely use them anymore. you can live without it

S2kphile 04-15-2012 09:50 PM

My cars either never had them or they were straight top down car. Even if it had them; to me it'll be a novelty that I probably won't use after a while. Although, a panoramic sunroof would be nice like in the TC; just to let in a bit of sun.

csaba 04-15-2012 09:53 PM

i have it on my TC never use it

quik1987 04-15-2012 09:56 PM

No.

Xdragonxb0i 04-15-2012 10:42 PM

what they said ^^^

i never liked the sunroof, just allowed the sun the shine on me, and doesnt really add a breeze. i just roll with the windows down

SCIONMONTREAL 04-15-2012 10:43 PM

I know a couple of local people who are pretty good with Resin Roof conversions ( like what you see on the Prius V ) Resin is 50% lighter than glass and insulates better.

Would it dramatically affect the cars structural integrity ? only someone who's done it could tell us :sigh:

Guff 04-15-2012 10:55 PM

The few times I have used the Sunroof on my Avalon, it was so people could jump through it after my friend accidentally broke off my passenger door handle.

Sunroofs invite death from above.. aka spiders.

There are no plans for a convertable and probably never will be. there will also be no sunroof.

I also had one in my 2000 Si, but i never used it I even had hornets build a nest in the cracks and I was scare to open it

Turbowned 04-16-2012 11:12 AM

Every car I've ever had with a sunroof, I wish didn't have a sunroof. Had 4 cars with leaky t-tops and numerous sunroof cars. All the Dude ever wanted was a hardtop! Thankfully after some searching I was able to track down a rare hardtop MR2, and a Datsun Z without a crappy aftermarket sunroof installed. I can appreciate a 2-seat roadster, but no sunroofs or targa roofs ever again, please!

Side note: *NEVER EVER* put an aftermarket sunroof in a car! *EVER!* Unless you want to ruin the structural integrity and make your roof leak on purpose.

brillo 04-16-2012 12:51 PM

show me a Ferrari with a sunroof.

enough said.

Apparently they made 44 360 Modenas with sunroofs.
Other Ferraris (400?) have had sunroofs over the years.

But of course that don't make it right!

Thumbs down to sunroofs.

86fanatic 04-16-2012 02:11 PM

Man you guys are harsh.

While I personally don't use sunroofs, I certainly can see the market for them, and some people really do enjoy them and enjoy using them even on a sports car. In all honesty it really doesn't affect handling that much especially if you are just using this car as a daily driver and not in auto cross competitions where every tenth matters. It can really make the car that much more enjoyable for some people.

If adding a sunroof to this car is relatively straightforward and would open up the car to more potential buyers I don't see the problem.

I don't think it would be straightforward though. The roof has a significant shape to it in all planes. In addition, I would think it would need structural support to retain its rigidity. Just guessing on my part though.

86fanatic 04-16-2012 02:37 PM

The roof isn't aluminum is it?

No, I don't think it is, and thought I had deleted that out after I typed it. I've edited now. Still, not sure it would support it without additional weight.

Turbowned 04-16-2012 03:12 PM

The sunroof frame alone (without the glass, motor, and tracks) in an AE86 Corolla weighs 16lbs. I'm [I]all set[I] with having 20+lbs of weight at the highest point of the car! Not to mention the headroom it reduces. I can barely fit in most hardtops; the sunroof makes it worse.

I understand that you personally don't want one, and neither do I. But we aren't talking about a competitive autocross car for most owners, we are talking about a sporty daily driver which has a sports car feel. Twenty pounds really isn't all that much, and for most people probably isn't enough of a difference to even notice the impact to handling and vehicle dynamics.

The BRZ is a great example of a compromise between a daily driver and a sports car. It's got a ton of luxury such as navigation, HID headlights, tuned for under steer. I wouldn't order my car that way but it's a popular model on the forums and as long as it increases interest in the car I'm all for it.

fitcious 04-16-2012 05:25 PM

Thanks for all the input. I am one that actually uses the sunroof quite often in my camry.

The reason is when I tilt it, it provides some air while it maintains some quietness compare to open windows (esp. on freeways).

also, i think cars with tilted sunroof looks much better (i.e. RX8, preludes, celica)

DuMa 04-16-2012 05:40 PM

Thought I was going to make a joke, but this dude actually installed a sunroof on a Miata. I mean, WTF, man.

Only slightly less stupid is to put one on a BRZ/FR-S.

brianbot5000 04-17-2012 12:26 AM

I like a sunroof, but then again I'm in Seattle so I have to get all the sun I can, while I can. Our CX-7 has a sunroof and I love it.

But seriously, if you look at the roof of the BRZ, you'll see why a sunroof doesn't really work. The roof is quite small - the area between the top of the windshield and the top of the rear window is not far, making any type of sunroof tough.

Now T-Tops...that's another matter.... :party0030:

This is a slippery slope... by applying the same logic to other features, this car should have a big V6, be at least a foot longer for more rear passenger space, etc.

They decided this car would be targetted at people who didn't see value in a sunroof, big V6, longer wheel base, rear passenger comfort, etc.

I always worry when people try to justify volumizing a niche car...

+1. I had an '83 Camaro Z28 with an aftermarket Targa top in it (think Simon and Simon if you remember that show, except mine was white, done by the same company). Absolutely loved that car with the top off!

Of course, it did introduce a lot of flex in the car, but I used it only as a cruiser so it wasn't a big deal for me.
