The illustrious Nissan GT-R is, quite possibly, one of our favorite cars currently in production. Now entering its third year in America, Godzilla receives a few minor tweaks for 2011, including some minor suspension tuning, a double clear coat on its front and rear fascias, new rear cooling ducts and – wait for it – slightly darker wheel center caps than on the 2010 model that is pictured. Additionally, the 2011 GT-R – henceforth only available in Premium trim – gets more standard features, including auto on/off headlamps, speed-sensitive windshield wipers, Bluetooth, a USB iPod interface and XM NavWeather and NavTraffic. All of this can be yours for $85,060 (*including $1000 destination charge), which represents an increase of $1,020 over the 2010 GT-R Premium. Get your pocketbooks out.

Curiously, the folks at Nagtroc.org are reporting that just 315 GT-R units are slated to come to the U.S. during the 2011 model year. That striking us as odd, we talked with Nissan spokesperson Darryll Harrison, and he says that the automaker can't confirm the limited production volume. Hmmm. The 2011 model is just now hitting the nearly 700 GT-R certified Nissan dealers across the country, though if the unit constraint holds up, it's likely that more than half of the approved showrooms will never see one. Either way, hit the jump for the full details in Nissan's press release.
Press Release

Nissan Announces U.S. Pricing for 2011 Nissan GT-R

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced U.S. pricing for the 2011 Nissan GT-R supercar, which is on sale now at select Nissan dealers.
For 2011, its third year of availability in the North American market, the Nissan GT-R features a number of enhancements and a simplified model lineup. The previous GT-R base model has been eliminated, leaving the GT-R Premium as the only available 2011 model. Other changes include slightly darker wheel center caps, double clear coat on the front and rear fascias and the addition of rear cooling ducts to improve cooling performance around the rear floor area.

The suspension has been retuned and the rear bushing strengthened to enhance ride comfort while still maintaining the GT-R's outstanding handling. In addition, auto on/off headlights and speed-sensitive windshield wipers are now standard, along with a USB iPod® interface, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth® and DVD playback. The navigation system now includes XM NavTraffic® and NavWeather™ capability.

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)* for the 2011 Nissan GT-R equipped with standard 485-horsepower 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and high-performance, 6-speed, dual-clutch transmission is:

Nissan GT-R Premium: $84,060 USD

Three options and one accessory are available for the 2011 GT-R: Cold Weather Package (no charge); special Super Silver paint ($3,000); Ultra-High Performance Tire Package (no charge); and carpeted GT-R logo floor mats ($280).

The 2011 GT-R is available only through officially certified Nissan retailers that have met a number of strict sales, service and facility commitments, including dedicating a master technician to GT-R service. A complete listing of the nearly 700 GT-R Certified Nissan dealers is available to consumers on NissanUSA.com.

No, Virginia -- there is no "base" GT-R for 2011. Instead, Nissan's pared the lineup down to the Premium trim, and bumped the price ever so slightly to $85,060, including a $1000 destination charge. Sources at Nissan today have confirmed much of what we learned in a dealer leak yesterday

When the GT-R launched in 2009, the base and Premium trim levels had slightly different content levels, but in Nissan’s eyes, the biggest difference rested with the side airbags. GT-R Premium models received side curtain and side impact airbags as standard equipment, but they weren’t available in the base car.

Nissan did, however, move to make these airbags standard across the GT-R range in 2010 -- and by doing that, officials say, it largely negated the need for a base model.

Although it is the only form of GT-R left, the 2011 car -- which stickers for $85,060, including a $1000 destination charge -- is still billed as a “Premium,” and retains some hallmarks (i.e. the black 20-inch wheels, heated seats, and a Bose audio system) of last year’s car.

As we learned in yesterday's leak, Nissan did make a few notable tweaks to the GT-R for 2011. Engineers have re-tuned the suspension (adding stronger rear bushings), added cooling ducts for the rear floor, and treated the front and rear fascias with a two layers of clear coat.
An automatic headlamp control is a new addition, as is Nissan’s revised navigation system, which now sports DVD playback, XM traffic and weather updates, and Bluetooth streaming audio. A standard USB audio input replaces the optional iPod adapter, which previously was a $400 port-installed option.

Apart from the audio input, options remain unchanged for 2011. The super silver paint still carries a $3000 premium, while the carpeted floor mats with GT-R emblems run $280. A cold weather package and high-performance summer tires remain no-charge options.

Nissan officials won’t comment on production, but did note the limited figure previously reported was likely just “dealer speculation.”

Yes faster time than a Veyron, Pagani Zona F, Enzo, Gallardo LP560-4...etc.

Watch for it...

"if the FT86 fails... I'm buying a GTR!" :clap::bellyroll:

tranzformer 07-18-2011 10:34 PM

^ yeah where is Levi. :) I keep telling him he should get a used GTR instead of the new Cayman S. The GTR is such a killer car for the price.

Zaku 07-18-2011 10:34 PM

LOl if it was only affordable, Im still wondering how to afford the FT XD

bofa 07-19-2011 12:11 PM

That car is just crazy. When I was doing consulting it was within my price range and I was planning to buy one upon release. But then I started learning about the maintenance costs and the total costs just skyrocketed. Its still a great bang-for-buck ride, but don't let the sticker fool you.

Of course.. its probably a good thing I didn't bite the bullet because our contract wasn't renewed the following year and now I make half of what I used to. :(

Yeah what is the cost of a regular maintenance, something like $2k? I mean it runs with the supercars, so I guess you should assume it will require $ to maintain even if a Nissan

bofa 07-19-2011 12:52 PM

2k I think was the 18000 mile interval service according to a car magazine (included filters, fluid flushes, oil change, inspection).

A regular oil change and fluid top off was in the $300-$400 range.

The brake job (initially rumored like 12k) is around 4-5k according to my Nissan service guy.

The stock tires run about 500/ea.. not a big deal but supposedly they eat through them every 10-12k miles.

With any kind of enthusiastic driving you could creep up on 8k in a year or so... god forbid you actually use it on the track.

bofa 07-19-2011 12:55 PM

Don't get me wrong - its a fantastic car.. but its kinda like buying a million dollar home. You might be able to swing the mortgage payment, but wait until taxes and insurance catch up with you. You definitely have to consider total costs of ownership with these, where as the figures are a bit more negligible in todays typical car.

For sure, but if you are looking at car performance the GTR beats up cars well over 2-3x as much as itself. So if looking at a Ferrari (and you don't care about the status symbol/bragging rights) and just want the best performance, I am guessing a GTR would be a great option to consider especially since you could afford the maintenance. But I agree, one needs to look at the big picture. Saying that, when considering the maintenance costs of the GTR, it is still a killer deal since the costs on a Ferrari or Lambo are going to be bad as well.

bofa 07-19-2011 01:38 PM

No doubt - just a bit let down that this "affordable sports car" still gets up there. Every time I go up there I cant stop staring at this red one...

Dragonitti 07-19-2011 01:49 PM

Super Car Killer right there.

I was on the GTR forum a couple yrs ago b/c I really wanted a GTR and was prepared to wear a white shirt n jeans and eat Top Ramen for a couple of years. :bellyroll: I even put a deposit at Power Nissan in Irvine but once they marked them up an extra 20K on top of MSRP, it wasn't going to happen and got my $ back.

There were several threads about that and those prices are $$$ b/c it's the dealership. Originally it was 8K but just like dealership, they charge and arm and a leg and I believe it was b/c they change all the rotors and pads. Also There are always aftermarket and independent shops that charge a lot less or you can do it yourself.

bofa 07-19-2011 02:20 PM

For that kind of money I could turn my Z into a 4.2 and TT... every year.

I'm sure it would have but so glad I didn't buy one. Nissan released it during a very bad time in our economy and they had the nerve to mark them up. When the reviews came out about it being majority comp controlled and not available in manual it would take some of the fun out of it.

I've seen a few posting up in the low 60K so they still hold their value but seeing this FT offering more of a driver feel, this car is going to be a lot more fun to drive.

I mean it does give the Enzo, Veyron, Pagani Zona F and others a run for their money. I agree as an average Joe it is crazy expensive. But the amount of performance that you get out of that car is amazing. Just because it is made by Nissan doesn't mean it will be the same to service as a Sentra or Altima. I bet it is cheaper than most of those other supercars to service. Or I guess you can do more of the basic service items yourself.

I give it credit for ousting some of the most fastest and exotics but you got to remember it's predominantly computer controlled. It's impressive but it's sort of expected.

But aren't all the rest computer controlled to? Ferrari, Zonda, Lambo...etc.

There is a lot more technology in the GTR than all 3 of those; from the fastest shifting (ATTESA ET-S (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All-wheel-drive Electronic Torque Split) to suspension, traction control etc. I've heard Nissan had to reprogram the launch control for the '10 models b/c of several blown transmissions! :bellyroll:

I think that for the total cost of ownership, the Corvette can not be beat. A simple car that kicks ass.

Anyone know what the maintenance costs on a Z06 are?

I did some poking around on the Vette forums. Seems like $50-$75 oil changes, tires around $1200/set, brake job will run $800-$1000. I'm using dealer prices for fair comparison. A couple of people reported a 15000 mile service interval was around $600 (flushes and fluids).

#87 07-21-2011 04:24 PM

Does anyone know the real deal on maintenance? Can you do most of the jobs yourself or do they require special tools only the dealer has?

Also, are replacement parts available for purchase to do maintenance on your own?

Does changing your own fluids and brakes effect the warranty?

I love the GTR and maybe it will be my retirement car but I can't see owning one as a middle class person. I need something that won't cost a full years salary to buy and property tax on a house to maintain. I can't see myself paying more than 30k for a car.

For a car as great as the Z06 is, that is quite reasonable.

It shouldn't affect your warrantee but it may affect what happens when you turn the car in at the end of a lease. But, most of the stuff you can do yourself. Oil changes are one of the easiest things you can do on your car. but things like transmission fluids often require special machines for automatic transmissions.

remember, anytime you purchase a supercar, intended for performance. The maintenance becomes higher and higher. Some of the main reasons for this is the cost of parts + Labor.

GT-R brake job at 5k sounds astronomical for you, but consider this, 6piston brembo calipers up front, 4 piston rears, cheapest front pads you can get is priced around $200. But because of the nature of the AWD system it is recommended by nissan that when you service brakes you service all 4 at the same time.

Lets also consider this hypothetical scenario, If you take a 10k car...fit it with state of the art Brembo brake package price at 4,300USD. Upkeep on your brakes will now shoot up from $500 DYI service to $2,000 DIY. Based on the quality and nature of the brakes.

All of the prices are relative, but if your looking to cut cost on maintenance, do the jobs yourself and always source aftermarket. OEM parts and dealer jobs always yield a higher premium for the work.

Supercar maintenance can be expensive or inexpensive based on how comfortable you are, but never cheap.

blur 07-30-2011 10:38 PM

I actually like the fact that it sits right below the noble m600, the only supercar without ABS and TC lol. I find it odd the stark difference between the two(gtr is a 4wd ps3; noble is a RWD supercar with bare essentials) although on a longer straight the noble would humiliate the GTR with it's 225 mph top speed, 35mph higher than the GTR. You get what you pay for. But Ill bet maintenance on the noble is cheaper lol..

Godzilla is sub-zero. Say what you want about it - it's big, it's fat, it's heavy, yes, all true - but it's a beast and I'd love to own one.

ZetaVI 08-26-2013 12:17 PM

I wanted to vote sub-zero but I had to choose cool. Mostly, because when it first came out it looked like bargain of the century and today it's breaking 100k price range which sucks.

mx5 2nr 08-26-2013 01:27 PM

This one's tough. As a car-guy, my heart immediately said "sub-zero" - because Skyline. But I have a difficult time giving anything that doesn't have 3 pedals that rating. But the physics-bending capabilities make it massively cool, but then you may have to explain said "physics bending capabilities", which instantly makes it completely uncool... I voted a compromised "cool" rating....

dem00n 08-26-2013 01:38 PM

Uncool, it blends in with traffic.

I use to know a rich kid around here with a GTR, one day he picked up a girl and she asked why his Maxima has a body kit.

It's a great car, a muscle car of sorts but it's still missing that little something!

OrangeJuleas 08-26-2013 02:35 PM

Cool, because it's still exclusive...but not in the good way that it was before (only the people who really wanted one got one, mostly enthusiasts, not just rich kids who are spending someone else's money on it).

The looks are more extreme now, and it appears to be a fun car but paddle shifters annoy me. I can't drive with my hands glued to the steering wheel. I was considering an AT FRS when it first came out, but figured I would only use the shifter anyway, so it was only a step more to getting an MT (no I don't do tons of stop-and-go driving, so there was another incentive to go MT) :w00t:.

TylerLieberman 08-26-2013 03:44 PM

Cool.

It's big compared to most other cars. Styling is subjective. Personally, I like it but not more than the older models.

The performance figures are nothing to argue about though. It destroys cars that are in completely different price categories. Plus, they can already be found used for just over 60k which is the same price as an M3. That's a bargain.

If it were smaller, cheaper and was more along the lines of the older models (~3200lbs, 300hp, 6spd manual etc) I think it would be sub zero then.

Steve@TSM 08-26-2013 03:58 PM

The R35 is a bang for your buck in terms of performance. They can just about dominate in every category except for looks. They are without a pig but they use the extra weight to it's advantage. We've won One Lap of America the last three years in a GT-R. :)

SilverCard 08-26-2013 04:22 PM

A work of art. Have worked a few times on these helping out and just the satisfaction of how this car utilizes its power. It's big and wide but still a badass car! I like reading people sayings its a pos plastic car. Well the latest 3rd ultimate drag race by motor trend it won against other pos cars.
