Buy a different color.
No but seriously. Black cars don't stay clean. Ever.

m.box.design 10-23-2013 02:48 AM

I got the auto. It's less engaging than a manual, but you'll still get the same amount of fun. The auto tranny is pretty responsive and fares pretty well in Auto sport mode or using the paddle and boot shifters.

m.box.design 10-23-2013 02:50 AM

As for cleaning, just adopt a good wash method and good wash materials. Black will always show minor defects such as swirl marks from washing. The unfortunate thing is that you'll probably have to get a professional detail sooner and more often than most people.

E403Q 10-23-2013 02:51 AM

I've been noticing way to many scratches on the car after driving it in the winter, not sure if polishing the car would do it any good.

boxer 2.5 10-23-2013 02:56 AM

clean it, (car soap) clay bar it (mother's clay works best) Wax it (two stage with a black canuba finish works best) ~Coming from a guy who owned a NHBP Impreza for a few years. You will NEVER get/keep all the scratches off.

Love my auto

BlueDubbinTDI 10-23-2013 06:25 AM

I like my auto because you have 3 driving modes. Regular (MPG), sport (somewhat rediculous gear holds but it does what its supposed to), and full manual which is exactly like a manual its so responsive just no clutch to fiddle with. You'll like it. Plus auto is the future, really everyone needs to get used to it lol

Struckbylitenin 10-23-2013 08:20 AM

My 10 series is an auto and I love it.

ProTekk 10-23-2013 08:41 AM

I have an auto FR-S, regretted it like no other for some time but I've grown to love it. I drive it in the manual mode 99.9% of the time but it's still a damn fun car. When I don't feel like shifting (yes, I'm being LAZY and I don't care!) I can just throw it in drive. Can't do that with a true manual car can ya? ;)

NWFRS 10-23-2013 09:17 AM

You're not the only one. I test-drove both and liked the automatic better. I'm thirty and this is my first new car as well as my first automatic. I've driven a 1974 Celica GT coupe, a '77' ST coupe, a '92 Toyota MR2 and a 1970 Fiat 124 Sport Spider. I always had FUN driving manuals. The only new manuals I test-drove were a 2012 WRX, a 2012 Genesis Coupe 2.0t and the 2013 FR-S. I found the manual gearboxes on all three to be joyless and un-engaging with zero-feedback clutches. I love my little automatic. As my first new car, I plan to drive and enjoy it for 200k miles, and in 2013, with a gearbox lifted from the IS250, I feel like I can finally trust it to last a while. :-)

Wash your car once a week with the correct method (3 buckets), and use a paint sealant.

Here are some good resources:

Tromatic 10-23-2013 11:02 AM

You can shift it manually in "D" as well.

mokytron 10-23-2013 11:03 AM

also have an auto and in asphalt! love the auto because u can concentrate on really just driving

jarviz 10-23-2013 11:40 AM

lower your standards and definition for the word 'clean' when it comes to a black car.

FRSGT86 10-23-2013 10:19 PM

Mine's an auto and like everyone else I love it.

It's Raven as well, I've had black cars before, and when they are clean they are beautiful, they just don't stay that way for long!

You'll get used to it after a while, you may not ever like it, but you will get used to it.

I wouldn't give up my manual but you have to admit the auto is great for traffic, steep inclines in traffic and cars on your rear bumper and (I can't believe it) mpg! As for black it 's great when it cleaned and polished but any spec of dirt (or even pollen) shows up and eventually so will the swirls. I used to keep a bunch of new micro fiber cloths and bottles of detailer in the trunk of my black Si and wipe it down every so often instead of constantly washing it.

BanzaiZee 10-23-2013 10:52 PM

Auto here, too! Honestly, I've always wanted to learn how to drive manual but I haven't made it a high-enough priority. Tried it twice but they were short lessons. Only reason I didn't get a manual was because I wanted to be able to drive it off the lot without ruining/crashing it.. : )))

whataboutbob 10-23-2013 11:16 PM

Auto here and loving it. Works great for me in traffic and AutoX.

Frstorm 10-23-2013 11:46 PM

Auto here and absolutely love it. I have a firestorm so I feel your pain. I've found a 2 bucket wash every week keeps the car clean

R.S-HawK 10-24-2013 12:01 AM

I extensively test drove both the automatic and the manual before making a purchase, and at the end of the day, I settled for the convenience of the automatic with the ability still drive spiritedly by having the capability to shift manually.

More or less, both cars felt identical. And using my car as a daily driver, I still feel strongly about the fact that I made the right purchase even though I initially had a bit of remorse.

If anyone gives me a hard time about having an automatic transmission in a sports car, I usually point them the way of the PDK, 458 Italia and GTR with their DCT systems (not that it's a valid direct comparison, but I'm sure you get the point).

Kelbyat07 10-24-2013 12:08 AM

Yeah my parents also bought me an auto and I still love it. At the end of the day, you still got an FRS haha.

drewbot 10-24-2013 12:27 AM

Only regret of the AT is the no launch control.

Other than that, I wish the gear ratios were a little closer to MT, but at the same time really appreciate the tall 6th for 35+ MPG.

Go educate yourself somewhere.. Out of this thread preferably

campy 10-24-2013 09:40 AM

I was driving a Ferrari 360 with flappy paddles the other day and my impression was that the transmission didn't feel very different from that in the FRS.

Also have an automatic Raven and love it. Need to buy good cleaning products and educate yourself on detailing a car if you want to keep it looking nice. Good luck!

I had a similar experience with the Italia 458.

The automatic transmission on the FR-S is as responsive a unit as I have used, which to me was incredibly suprising for the price.

gily25 10-24-2013 10:36 AM

Best way... sure the wax and wash things listed above. Also, learn how to properly use rubbing compound and touch up paint, ask a friend with an older car if you can use it for practice.

I was clearly joking and was curious about the paddle shifts. Words of the joker "why so serious"?

Again tho. Big difference between automatic, and sequential Gear boxes.
Can anyone guess the main difference?

torque converter/clutch?
Gotta be honest and say I'm replying solely for your response haha

I'm love my auto.

Coming from a standard RX-8 & MKV GTI, my next car had to be an auto due to a previous knee injury. I had the potential cars down to: R56 Cooper S, PRHT Miata, and to a lesser extent MK6 GTI...pretty much anything sporty with an auto...I didn't even have the 86 on the radar...

That was until I test drove a friend's BRZ (standard). The drive changed me. It didn't have the Zip of the mini...but it also didn't have the plow and numbness through the steering wheel and pedals...the miata's driving dynamics were good...but not as sharp as the 86's. I honestly thought I would miss the cargo room of the GTI...but I've managed :)

I guess what I'm trying to say is... I miss the feeling of the standard...but in the end The auto still gives me the great driving dynamics that I wanted all along. That's what matters to me :)

less than 1 sec. frankly, it's probably faster than most people can do with a manual.
