OMG..you guys live in road heaven

You guys don't know how lucky you are.

I live in South Jersey and have to drive my BRZ on the most straight and boring roads ever created. I've owned my BRZ for one year and have seem at total of ~3 other BRZ/FRS on the road. We mainly have SUVs here with Moms taking their kids around.

Recently made my first trip to San Francisco area. Rented a standard car and drove all over the place, including up route 1 to Stinson Beach, on the Panoramic Highway, and up to Sonoma. OMG!!!! What fantastic roads!! BUT..it killed be not to have my BRZ!!!!!

Plus, I passed ~ 10 BRZs/FRSs in one week!!!

You lucky guys & gals!!!!!

Try to come to one of the meets/ drive next time you're up here. Something is always up, whether it's a quick meet / drive get together. Glad you liked it ,but it would be even better with a group of BRZ/ FRS enthusiasts.

...and ironically the worst car laws.

Haha I would be terrified to drive in SF with a manual at all! But PCH I'll drive that route any day!

Care to share some? I haven't come across any that damper my hobbies.

Edit: Nevermind, remembered the whole intake exhaust some people like fucking with and how it has to be certified to pass smog. I forget people care about that...

It's really not so bad, the anxiety is worse than 99% of time spent on the road.

Finding parking in a city is a universal fuck you though.

After living in CA for 10 years and now living back in FL..I def appreciate driving in CA on twisty roads so much more now. I truly miss it.

And btw..if you have a friend that works at an inspection shop (almost all shops do inspections for the state) they can just sign off for you. I paid the guy an extra $50 every other year and was well worth it to change parts as I pleased.

Hope you weren't suck with fog the entire time ;)

I am very glad to move from Virginia to North California almost right after my discharge from the military. I love the car culture here and I'm very glad I can take fun drives with cool people and autox on a regular basis. Something I wouldn't be able to do if I didn't move to Norcal. :)
Bay area still hella expensive though. (I wrote hella)

No..that day was the foggiest during our 10 day trip. It was mostly clear in the 70's and great driving weather the entire time.

You don't think so? I feel like my car will scrap every hill there. I'm not even sure it'll make it up the steep hills. Are you driving around downtown? Because I know there are some less hilly areas but downtown terrifies me. I can barely make it up my driveway, I doubt it'll be possible anywhere downtown.

Let us know the next time your coming up, there way way way more roads than hwy 1 :P

Yup, driven pretty much every major street in downtown, mostly North of SOMA and East of Haight. Not going to lie there's some stuff that scares the shit out of me, I think it was California St. that's got a stop sign where you can literally only see sky out your windshield if you're behind the line. :confused0068:

Came across that in my gutless truck, the FRS was a bit easier but I definitely did spin the clutch up a bit more than usual out of anxiety.

No scrapes except for parking and entering stuff, so on the streets I've been good so far, stock height, MT. I admit I try to avoid it if I can but I won't shy away from it, I mostly avoid it because I despise finding parking more than anything else.

I'm amazed that you scrape from entering places more than those roads, I've been on steep roads not in the BRZ but in a Rav4 and thought I was gonna scrape.. I'm amazed that it didn't scrap the FRS from those, especially when you say all you saw was the sky. I just feel like you'll get stuck halfway over the hill.

I drove up to SF 3 times the past 5 days from South Bay in my BRZ. So far I didn't scrape anything yet but those pot holes are pretty crazy if you don't avoid them. I feel like I get a full body massage going through SF since the road is so bad with lots of construction going on. Gotta love those rolling road that you can't see anything in front of you.

The car will be fine downtown, just don't come down the steep slope too fast ;)

That reminds me of a question I had when driving around SF. Why to do you guys have all the pot holes and rough roads with broken pavement? It's not like you get snow and freezing weather like we do on the east coast.

California is a pretty broke state. One of the many reasons for the high cost of living.

I'm still afraid to drive automatic. R does not mean race. N does not mean now. I drove for 6 years before I drove an automatic. I'd be afraid to drive sf in anything but a stick.

BTW, that first time driving an automatic, my left foot tried to find the clutch pedal, and I ended up pushing down on the brake pedal with both feet. Felt like I was gonna go through the windshield

BlaineWasHere 10-23-2013 11:07 PM

I love driving the hills in SF!!!! I think the FR-S clutch makes it easy. I have to parallel park on hills often when I go up there. If you know what you're doing a manual is way more accurate.

I own an auto and I still do that on occasion during an emergency stop out of habit. :bonk:

But I agree. Anything not flat and you need to control the gear you are in. good thing I can still do that

Usage, this is the highest population state and generally regarded as the third worst traffic in the nation.

http://scorecard.inrix.com/scorecard/summary.asp

Keeping up these roads is a massive cost not to mention the productivity lost if those roads get closed, the less traveled roads and back alleys are a bit nicer because they hold up longer.

Is there any state with roads that are always in good repair?

In Florida the roads are like glass.

My first few cars were stick, I only had one car that was an automatic. I started with a stick on my first car so yea I understand. As soon as I drove my mom's car which was an automatic I did that first thing when I got in the car, it was the hardest I've ever braked and felt like the car was gonna flip lol.
