Reverse Curse

4 Attachment(s)
There seems to be a few posts around here about cars getting dinged, dented or destroyed shortly after being purchased, but in my case, I dealt with the reverse chronology.

Two days before my birthday, well after my car had turned old enough to get legally drunk (and with a less than one month old tranny), I was rear-ended, the car then pushed underneath the truck in front of me:

I remember thinking, as I watched the hood fold up towards me, "well, there goes my car."

A display of my ninja skillz of displeasure as I say goodbye to my first car:
Attachment 54625

To assuage the pain of this loss, I toss money at a car dealership and drive off with:

But, as it's been more than two decades since I spent that kind of money on a car (for myself), I admit to suffering pangs of doubt, buyer's remorse, and then a panic attack the next morning that lasted until some time in the afternoon. (I really don't like spending money! All you young'uns looking to pay the bank 14% to own the car... y'all are nuts :>) I started to worry about everything -- the fog lights that I wound up with, the extended warranty (I have a 13 yo in the house ... it seemed wise at the time), even the color.

Until I happened upon this gorgeous beast in the parking lot:

...because if a co-worker can spend 10x on a daily driver in the same color, and it looks as freakin' hot as it does, maybe I didn't do so bad.

I hope you enjoyed this story of The Curse in Reverse. I've kept my car in the garage for the last week, just to prevent damage in the first week (*). Any other stories of people buying cars as the result of a reverse curse?

-Dave

(*) Ok, not really, I'm just letting the rental roll off....

Awesome post!

There was a silver lining to that curse but I do know what you mean about spending money (or financing) a new car. I just cannot bring myself to do it anymore.

My wife told me that she was getting so upset with me not getting a new car that she had started shopping for Boxters on the side.... At some point, life forces us. It's not like I wasn't getting enough hints -- you'd think that a dead transmission would have been enough. But no. :bonk:

Dude! You should've gotten a shot with the FR-S next to that McLaren! I never realized how close the colors are. If I had an Ultramarine, I'd shoot it next to a Blue one (yes, the color of that car is called "Blue". Very creative, McLaren). I think we even have one here right now (I work at a McLaren dealership).

My FR-S is silver, so I shot it next to a silver 12C when I first got it :D (okay, it's actually Graphite Gray...we get a lot more of those than Titanium Silver and Silver)

Well, my FR-S is still in the garage, so I didn't have it at the time :)
Plus, that McLaren makes my FR-S look porky! You got a nicer shot than I did. It's a really slick looking car in person.

Geez, dude, tough job. Where's the friends and family discount?

My reverse curse story: I absolutely loved my 99' S-10 this truck saw more than most S-10's. it had towing blocks in the rear with and add a leaf. Front leveling kit. 31x10.5-15 knobby meats. This trusty 4.3l would off road on the weekends, when taking a break from pulling my 4,000lb. Boat. It's record scrap haul was 1897lb. Not bad for an S-10. Sadly it got totaled in a t-bone collision. :( right after I fully re-built the front suspension.

Now I have my other baby:

We'll played. Blue is the best colour

My reverse curse: I was cursed to drive a Prius. I got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore and traded it in on the GT86.

Minhtyfresh 10-21-2013 04:45 PM

Nice ninja skills! What ever jutsu you used to turn the old pontiac into an frs is one hell of a move.

batmobilefrs 10-21-2013 05:07 PM

My reverse curse, while i was still living with my parents, waiting to go to boot camp, my mother backed into my '85 olds calias, bent the hood and the car was wothless enough to total. Took my insurance payout of 1k and went to the dealership to buy my very first brand new car, a '05 Chevy Aveo :( Worst decision of my life, traded it in 3 years later for an older car with 185000 miles. My raven was the next new car i bought, best decision of my life.

PB86SS 10-21-2013 05:43 PM

Congratulations! You've picked the best colour too :-)

I'm surprised that we both have something else in common, both keeping our first cars for so long. Mine's a '91 Ford Capri (Mercury Capri in the States) but thankfully no trucks have crushed it into submission!

Enjoy your new baby, I know we do. It's nice having cup holders for the first time!

Never seen someone so excited to get rear ended! Must've hated that thing! Great color choice! :coolpics:

Nice FR-S! Glad to see you weren't hurt, glad to see the Saturn was.....:)

Most cars make the McLaren look big! It's crazy how svelte the 12C is...and you feel it behind the wheel too. It's really easy to see out of, and it only weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the FR-S so it's pretty damn nimble too. Plus it has over 3x the horsepower, so there are no complaints about being able to pass uphill :party0030:

Okay, to make up for making our 86's look fat, here's a fat car to make it look small (apologies for the cell phone pics):

The 12C pic above is kind of exaggerated because the FR-S is in the foreground...same here:

Is this better? Keep in mind the Fisker is on 22's!

Well, I guess I'm glad the Saturn was more bent out of shape than I was. I did spend the next couple of days at home with a ringing headache, and I still get headaches a lot easier than I did. Head injuries stink, I got off easy. But I do miss my Saturn. I never worried about anyone denting the doors. Ever. At 2400lbs, it never lumbered (though taking it on the 5 at speed was sometimes a little too exciting in cross-winds). Lots of glass made it easy to see out of, and the tan interior kept the car cool. They don't make low, lightweight cars with lots of glass anymore -- they like to replace visibility with airbags these days.

It would have been nice to photo the two cars together.
Even better had I ever bought that yellow 3-door version -- contrasting colors would make for an interesting set of photos.

[And that lack might just tip the scales in favor of those black&yellow seat covers that everyone's been telling me that I should never, ever put in the car :paddle:]

Well, from the front. With all the serious business in the back, the rear is a little large. I vaguely remember watching a video of the 12c vs aventador vs ferrari where I came away thinking how big the backends were.

And I dunno about the Fiskers -- they look ok in those pics. I think the dropped lip (and fangs -- whaddya call those protrusions on the bottom of the bumper?) on the fr-s makes the front look a little ... more.

On a Spider with the upgraded wheels and brakes? Well, in that case I'll rush right down. Y'know it's that first $100k of depreciation that hurts the most....

I got into car modifying due to accidents.

First I learned about tires because of a spin in the snow. I got some snow tires and experiencing their performance in snow I bought summer tires and some conservative wheels.

Then my car was hit by a drunk and I was researching econo boxes. And I happened upon the modification section of a Yaris forum. That what started my interest in cars and here I am.

Whitigir 10-23-2013 03:54 PM

Nice post! Awesome situation. Wish my Camry was like that LOL!

That McLaren MP4-12C is 10x the price...and 10x the performance though =/
