Radar Detector Question

Hello,
I've been recently thinking of purchasing a radar detector, not so I can speed, but hopefully I can be more conscious because I've had a few run-ins even when I wasn't speeding. I've been reading articles and I'm stuck between REDLINE and V1. People are claiming REDLINE is stealth but the V1 has arrows, so i'm leaning towards the v1 since radar detectors are not illegal in California. I was wondering if I was ever to be caught with a radar detector in california, should I attempt to hide it or just leave it in plain sight? If I should hide it I'm planning to hide it below the radio, in the cell phone compartment. I've also been reading articles about how cops can detect radar detectors so is there any point of trying to hide it? But i've also hear stories of cops confiscating them.

Quite unsure what to do.

Also curious, I've looked into these before but never tried it

I no longer have radar detector.. but this is my thought...

If you get pulled over, and you are scrambling around to remove the detector.. the cop will know.

Problem is, most cops will take your movements as a possible threat and it might escalate things pretty quickly.

I wouldn't touch a damn thing. Radar detector is totally legal, so no need to hide it.

do exactly what you are supposed to do when you get pulled over

park the car, and wait for the officer to come to your side, then roll down the window a bit, and follow direction. No need to make unnecessary movements to make the officer anxious.

Agree with wrb. A cop will assume you are either trying to hide illegal substances or are reaching for a weapon. If radar detectors are legal in your area, just leave it be.

Alright thanks for the advice. by any chance do you know if they confiscate it? I know legally they can

Go with the V1, if you are worried about it getting confiscated, order the Stealth mounting kit. I wouldn't worry about movement too much if you need to take it off and hide it

Do you have any recommendations for the stealth mounting kits?

Go with Valentine One. I am on my second one and love it. It works very accurately and has saved me a few times both in the city and on the highway.

You may wanna consider the V1 concealed display if you're worried about it being visible

If you don't mind me asking what happened to your first one and have you been pulled by an officer that has taken the detector away from you?

Demotic 10-18-2013 08:56 PM

Why is this even a question? Velntine 1 is the way to and has always been so. Been using it for almost 10 years now.

I've been pulled over twice for other reason while I had the radar (didn't get a ticket on both occasions). I wish a cop would reach in and try to take it off. $$$

Cops that know you don't know your rights will try to hassle by stand your ground and stay adamant about the reason you were pulled over.

Disclaimer: I currently do not have one installed and that's purely due to laziness.

No I sold my first one to a friend when I sold my s2000. I bought another V1 from a friend that needed $$ when I bought my STi and have it hard wired in it. I've never been pulled over for speeding (knock on wood) probably because I don't drive recklessly or anything. I've never even heard of an officer taking a radar away. I don't think that's even legal (I could be wrong)

ShoGun 10-18-2013 09:55 PM

vote for valentine V1

chjno86 10-19-2013 01:01 PM

I tend to speed subconsciously on the 5 freeway when driving down to San Diego. I want the radar, just to keep me aware and hopefully reduce a lot of my bad speeding habits.

a radar detector isnt going to reduce your speeding habit. just pay attention when you drive. you should be doing that anyways. or use the cruise control. both of those are free.

SoCal909 10-19-2013 07:36 PM

I'm only 22, but I've only got a speeding ticket once at 16. It was my first car which was a 2005 Pontiac G6 GT in all black with wheels, exhaust, and black tint all around. I had a detector, and when he came up to me he said "I thought a car like yours would have a detector, so I turned off my gun, aimed it at you, so when it picked up the gun I would already have your speed"

The radar was in plain sight on my dash and he didn't do anything about it. Haven't had any other run ins, I don't speed anymore because that shit was expensive LOL

KSpider 10-20-2013 02:28 AM

V1

martin82 10-23-2013 07:55 PM

it is not illegal to have a radar detector but the cop can write up a ticket for blocking the field of vision by having something on the windshield

get V1 or escort/passport, avoid anything cheaper than those two.

Norkoastal 10-23-2013 08:15 PM

For long highway trips up/down hwy 5, the V1 will save you from CHP blasting KA while driving on either side of the road (typical enforcement)..

For those speed traps where you have LIDAR guns aimed out of the car without a rabbit to give you pre warning, you're cooked.. In my part of CA we have unmarked cars sitting with KA on in the pitch back off to the side of the highway.. Unsuspecting speeders would be caught redhanded by this trap without any detectors in the car. V1 + V1 connection + V1 concealed display is a nice trifecta of detection and stealth when mounted under the headliner above the rear view mirror.

huh, turned it off and he already had your speed?

meaning, the cop kept the gun off the entire time so my radar would not detect it. he pointed it at my car so as soon as he turned it on it would get my speed before i had time to react to hearing my radar going off.

i heard pretty good reviews on the escort passport max. Im in the processing of getting one =)

robwbright 04-09-2014 09:37 AM

Thunderiff 04-09-2014 10:03 AM

True, but they usually don't come in your house to arrest you for oral sex. They will pull you over for the radar detector in VA.

LXXXV1 04-09-2014 03:04 PM

sub'd. been looking for one too!

chiefshayan 04-09-2014 03:09 PM

OP is in LA and although California is pretty strict in every other category that has to do with automobiles, it's not illegal to own a radar detector.

What the police can get you for though is obscuring your vision by placing something on your windshield (GPS, radar detector, cellphone holder). If you do get one, clip it on your sun visor and say F the police!!

kkkirbyyy 04-09-2014 06:11 PM

go with V1, anything cheap might just get you trolled by your local police. I was in a passenger seat when my buddy got pulled over and the cop said " should've gotten a better radar detector" and he still got a ticket which was pretty funny at the same time lol

Why is escort not an option? I have one and it paid for itself already. I drive a lot and it really helps when your driving to urban areas, pointless in the city. They are legal in CA but as some have mentioned you cant mount them on the windshield. My brother got stopped speeding on the carpool lane with no passenger smh while driving my car and cop did not take the radar. Pic shows how I have it set up

Most of the time CHP usually ends up pacing you before they use an auxiliary device to track your speed.

continuecrushing 04-09-2014 11:43 PM

Side question, does any chp use k anymore? Or they all ka and lidar?

KSpider 04-09-2014 11:52 PM

I live in San Diego too, and turned K off. My S4's side assist causes it to go off constantly, and the only time I ever get k readings are school zone radars and automatic doors. The ONLY k I have ever seen from a speed trap was North County Patrol (they are cops that are paid by neighborhoods to patrol and enforce speeds, they don't work regular roads.)

Turned my k band off and 99% of the time when my K1 makes any noise it is Ka for a cop or laser (most of the time not a cop)
