Hey club ft 86,

I thought, hmm what can i do to lower intake temps without buying a whole intake box? Gold Foil heat barrier came to mind, i saw people covering ej20/25 intake manifolds with it, so why not the stock intake box? Im waiting on an intake tube too, thatll get wrapped too.

I bought 3 feet (3'x24") from Pegasus Racing, cost $105.xx shipped.
https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...p?Product=1838

took me about 3 hours to do both peices of the intake box, i took my time.

Tips:
* cover up ur intake tube with tape, so no buggers get in while ur wrapping
* clean the intake box with alcohol
* strands of fiber glass may get inside the intake box while wrapping, wipe it down when done and if you have an air hose, blow it off.
* cut the material with a SHARP razor blade down to the end not tacked, dont cut from the untacked end to the adheared section.
* when you get to angles, cut a pie cut, and cover it over & overlap. It all blends in pretty nice once ur done.
* YOU DONT NEED A SQUEEGIE! this stuff lays down really nicely, and u can peel it off n retack with no problem. no waste with this expensive stuff
* around the edge of the box, use the side thats factory cut, or a side with as little fiber glass strands, so those dont go into the box when ur changing air filters.
* there are 2 TINY holes in the air box add on thing, DONT COVER THESE OR THE FOIL MAY GET SUCKED IN (there is 2, about 1/8th in diameter)

all you need is, screw driver, 10mm socket, alcohol, rags, razor blades, & time. oh and $105 for the material :)

Any ability to do data logs to record intake temps?

not yet, im waiting a bit to get an ecutek datalogger. ill prob have one in the next 30 days.

I did it similarly to mine a couple months back. It does keep the plastic from soaking in the heat from the header and radiator. I did however leave the top bare.

Also to the OP thanks for shopping with Pegasus ( I work there).

looks like it's heat insulation.

Nice job wrapping the material. It looks nice. And reminds me of C3PO a little...

I love Pegasus Racing. How about an FT86club discount hookup? ;)

G_Ride 10-17-2013 06:00 PM

Nicely done! I'll be looking forward to see the difference in intake temps.

Data aside, do you feel any difference?

RYU 10-17-2013 08:26 PM

For those planning to do this. There's no need to wrap the helmholtz resonator box on the passenger side of the assembly. That is a sound trap, not a source for airflow.

campy 10-18-2013 12:06 AM

Is air really staying in the intake long enough for it to be heated up by engine heat? I would think the ambient temperature would play a much larger role in affecting performance.

eh sorta id say, tho it could be a placebo effect. If not, it does seem a bit more responsive when driving constantly at like 4k. I dnt keep the car in high revs ever. Only went to 7k like 3 times so far

true and false. There are 2 holes in this box that in theory do allow air travel back into the intake through this box

you may be right, but the box does get very hot regardless. The bottom "fin" looking bits that r molded for support were wavy, they sure as hell didn't come like that out of the injection form. Its dat fa20 heat distorting the plastic

FRSfan111 10-19-2013 04:36 AM

I'm thinking about doing this. But I will say my cusco oil cooler has severely dropped engine bay temps. The plastics even after a track day are warm to the touch but not hot. Before shit was toasty after a 10 min drive lol.

lol I was going to say that NASA uses stuff like this for satellites and space ships to insulate them from the harsh temperatures of space :) I wonder if you could wrap headers with this stuff.

this material deflects heat, it doesn't contain it. Also its based on a fiberglass cloth which would melt if placed on something like a manifold. As in op I've seen this on intake manifolds. But for exhaust manifolds u need header heat wrap. Its ALOT heavier, but it'll contain heat, instead of reflect it

no datalogging capabilities yet, nor do I have a temp gauges. I'll post data lags of intake air temp sometime in november

This foil stuff seems pretty expensive if you don't notice a difference.

Nice setup Stevo, want to do something similar.

It's not direct heat so much as it is radiation and IR radiation. Gold is specially suited to filtering out/blocking IR and other types of radiation, which causes a transfer of heat energy upon impact with a solid body (and why radioactive metals are warm to the touch).

For the same reason, it's effective in cars at blocking radiated heat, although a small buffer layer (foam, etc...) would drastically enhance that effect.

stevo_12v 02-19-2014 12:29 AM

If anyone's doing this to lower intake temps.. which they obviously are. Don't forget to BYPASS the radiator plumbing on the throttle body. That gets hot to the touch after 15mins of normal driving.

Here's my updated intake.

Pics or a DIY for this would be great, as well as part number for a bypass coupler.

Doesn't need a new part, just unhook the radiator tubing off the TB and route back into the system, just bypass the TB altogether. Not recommended in VERY cold climates though, the reason the radiator passes through the TB is so the butterfly doesn't freeze solid and can open/close.

** go through my build thread around where I bought my TODA big throttle body, it will show the pipes for the radiator hosing, just don't connect those up.

UPDATE: Found it

Just install the TB like that...WITHOUT hooking up those two connectors. Easy done. One of the hoses *should* be long enough to plug it back into the radiator system.
