Performance Frustration, what should I do?

I love this car, I love everything about this car but its lack of torque. This is the second BRZ of mine, and I keep looking at it with the same passion and enthusiasm I did the first time I saw it, or even earlier, when I read everything about its project, a couple of years prior to its launch, but today I had, again, such a bad experience, been beat up by another car at the freeway, and I am not talking about any Porsche, BMW, or any american muscle car... it was actually a four cylinder japanese car, that in respect to all of us, I am not going to say the model nor the brand, but the fact is that such a thing pissed me off. I had spent already over 4k on my new car; Sparcco wheels, 225/45 R17 , Invidia Q300 exhaust, summer tires, lightweight pulley from Raceseng, a Takeda cold air intake, a Carbon Fiber Driveshaft, and a few other cosmetic stuff, like all LED bulbs, Toms taillights, etc... The fact is, I can consider myself a proud owner of the very first car, with a front mounted Boxer engine, and RWD, that has the center of gravity lower than a Ferrari Italia, and now looks as gorgeous as an Aston Martin sportscar, but it still freaking super extremely slow, specially while in that nimble of power that happens in between 3k to 5k revs. So, I am now asking myself, should I expend about 6k more in this car, to solve my issue with a turbo, or should I wait for the 2015/2016 mid-life refresh, with lots of speculation going on within the industry, on how they are going to bring this extra power; if from a displacement increase, to 2.5L from 2.0; if from force induction; or even a hybrid system to boost (I personally dont like this last option)? What do you guys think? I am the only one dealing with this dilemma? I have my mind set in one thing, I would go back to Mercedes-Benz, for sure as soon as the CLA 45 AMG hit the US dealerships, I would trade my BRZ, if until then, the car was not able to bring the pleasure I expect from it. Comments?

z3ro 10-16-2013 08:45 PM

That fact that you tried to type this in comic sans makes your arguments null and void.

BlueDubbinTDI 10-16-2013 08:46 PM

Can you /rant in a smaller font next time please? Sell you're pointless mods, fund a header + e85 build or sell everything you've purchased thus far and buy an innovate kit. Solved. You spent money on stuff that could've seriously helped performance instead bro. Spend more wisely next time if you need more tq this badly.

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 08:46 PM

Hey folks, please apologize for the Font Size, that was my very first post, and I didn't know I would be that big. Sorry!

Gunman 10-16-2013 08:46 PM

Someone will always have a larger font.

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 08:47 PM

Sorry man, I didn't mean to, I try to fix but it only changes the Font type, and the color

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 08:48 PM

well, lesson learned, I would never change any Font size anymore :)

bestwheelbase 10-16-2013 08:51 PM

Owning these cars -- ANY CAR really -- is not about "getting beat" or trying to beat someone on the freeway. It's about enjoying the total driving experience while being considerate and sharing the road responsibly. If you want to accelerate in a straight line, build a top fuel dragster.

The baby AMG is going to get outrun by plenty of stuff too.

Might want to reconsider your expectations and consider building/buying a race car.

sofrsnsokleen 10-16-2013 08:52 PM

lol, you can fix the "problem" by telling your parents you don't want the brz anymore and want a fast race car, like lightning mcqueen. Then maybe they'll get you a mustang gt.

ModBargains.com 10-16-2013 08:52 PM

I would probably say your best bet to get some good power would be...

A big beautiful Full Blown Turbo Kit which you can find here.
Sorry, I had too :)

We're actually in the middle of an install now, so we should have more pictures and videos for you soon if you're interested in finding out more info, or you can check out our previous installs.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

Please, change it once more: back to the way it is supposed to be.

Get rid of the car, it's not for you. I'm a firm believer that if you wouldn't drive a Miata you'll get tired/disappointed with the BRZ/FRS. For a lot of people there is no replacement for displacement, cut your losses, no point driving something you're unhappy with, something that leaves a pit in your stomach at every stoplight.

Frstorm 10-16-2013 08:57 PM

Strat- I wouldnt drive a miata but I love my FRS

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 08:57 PM

thanks for the advice, bro, I was expecting some mild improvements on weight reduction, just a little wide tires, and most impotently, by cutting weight on rotating mass; like the crank pulley and the driveshaft. but then I as love the design of the car, but I taught it was missing something to be perfect, so I ended up waisting too much on thing that would do nothing on my please to drive. I was not considering a turbo, or anything hardcore before, because I am not a street racer, I was when I was very young, but now, I just want to enjoy the car, so with that been said, I would be happy with 230 hp , and maybe 200 lbs of linear torque. I was never thinking on reach 300 horses on this car, and I used to believe that with the car weight and proportions, the performance would not be as bad as I do now

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 08:59 PM

LOL that was a good one :)

Comments?

I don't see the issue with one 4 cylinder japanese car beating another 4 cylinder japanese car. I also don't think the 2015 refresh will be anything major like a turbo, hybrid, or an extra .5 liters.

This car wasn't designed to go fast in a straight line. Even if you got a turbo kit, it will still be slower than other cars on the road.

Have you tried taking it to a track or autocross? I think you might be really surprised with your times on a track with corners. I was beating corvettes last time I was at an autox.

Ahhh yes, the young and the restless. The mantra for small displacement car owners is: "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow." If that doesn't work for you, sell your car and buy something else.

Havsie 10-16-2013 09:09 PM

Only race people on the downhill, you wont need the power to keep up. Just use the brakes as sparingly as possible to maximize your overall speed.

Buy a Minivan and you won't be embarrassed. Next question?

You're missing out, even new Miata's make the 86 feel a tad bloated.

Care to explain why not?

thill 10-16-2013 09:30 PM

I hate to say it, but if you wanted a fast car you should have bought one to begin with. My advice? Part out all the aftermarket items you bought and sell the car. Be prepared to lose some money on resale. Buy a Mustang GT with the performance package. Anything else will feel slower and it will meet your requirements for speed. No stock 4 cylinder will beat it in a straight line.

I think spending another $6K on this car is not a good investment for you.

ZionsWrath 10-16-2013 09:30 PM

Spending money on your 4 banger isn't going to make it faster unless you put FI on it.

Ok, yes you can gain maybe 20 hp but the money is much better spent on FI where you will gain over 100.

If you are looking to race on the highway, you bought the wrong car unless you plan an engine swap (which I would encourage you to do so).

Frstorm 10-16-2013 09:31 PM

Strat- Because they are total chic cars. This is coming from my wife who will never own one because of this either

Hanni_0176 10-16-2013 09:36 PM

I normally don't feed trolls, and your super big blue font was painful to skim through, but if you're whining because you spent a bunch of money on mods that don't even increase hp/tq, and you want midrange tq (3k to 5k rpm's), and you don't want to shell out money on a turbocharger, then...

It sounds like an Electronic Supercharger is in your future: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39719

Or just go buy a Mustang.

Proud owner of a first huh? sounds to me like you bought this car to be cool, did you at least look at the brochure? The new z28 got great reviews and im pretty sure you'll get lots of tickets with that, GL. Pretty sure this is a troll thread, but i'm gonna feed it anyways.

What happened to the first BRZ of yours?

By the time you got the second BRZ, you had to know what you were getting, right?

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 10:16 PM

I spent about six months with the first one, it was a white Limited AT, that was sold as new, but then I found out it was a Demo unit, so after long talks with the dealer, and the support from Subaru of America, I had my car traded for a new one. I had a fair depreciation on my car, so it was all good

Autos are no fun, I know the BRZ's auto is better than others but still not that much fun. Anyways just buy a mustang as you want speed. This is more of a drivers car that doesn't necessarily care too much about speed, is it fast? Not at all but sufficient, I think so.

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 10:22 PM

thats not right, I don't like muscle cars, I did not buy the car to the propose of street racing, but I was expecting a lot more agility from a car that had the Caymman as a benchmark on its development.

bestwheelbase 10-16-2013 10:24 PM

Well there's that.

Glad it worked out for you.

The magazines test this car around 6.3 seconds 0-60. That's not bad given its specs.

But if you like being pinned back in your seat under acceleration, this is the wrong car for you.

Who knows what it will do when modded with FI, but I'd be concerned with heat and durability. But many owners accept the dues they must pay for modding, and that's cool.

This may prove to be one of the most FUN cars we've ever owned. Faster is not "funner." Not necessarily.

But, everyone must make up their own minds.

Some people prefer pistachio ice cream. I prefer vanilla. And it's all good, right? ;)

WhiteThenGreyBRZ 10-16-2013 10:28 PM

I agree with that, but today we have plenty of auto cars fun to drive, even ones that aren't sportscars, thanks to double clutch transmission technology. Prior to my first BRZ, I spent a year with a Mercedes C250 Sport, and it has a 1.8L turbo engine, connected to a 7 speed dual clutch trans, delivering over 220 lbs of torque before 2k revs. and I considered it more delightful to drive in sort conditions, such as gaining speed after cornering, or a simple overtake.

agree with you buddy, and I do love this car and its concept, I just feel it lacks just a little of torque to be perfect to me. I love its design, the proportions, the concept, I respect Subaru as a brand, I am a huge fan of Boxer engines, and that was it, just a bit of frustration when it comes to accelerating after cornering, or on a mere overtake, sometimes looks an eternity to overtake a truck on the highway, and I am not saying I am willing to race it

Like I said, Electric Supercharger. Or Mustang.
