BACKGROUND
WHO:
- Me, aka cheapass
- 2013 Scion FR-S with the regular Scion stereo

WHAT:
- Used 2012 Corolla Nav / Entune off of eBay
- I had to buy a new entune wiring harness, OEM "C" scion stereo brackets, and a gps antenna.

WHY:
-Save some $$$!!! I got it WAY cheaper than buying a new Scion Display Audio unit, and extension box.
- No custom wiring harnesses because everything plugs in!
- Keep your factory microphone, usb connector, and auxiliary input.
- It’s also ready to add an OEM backup camera and XM radio.

Differences of Toyota Display Audio vs Scion Display Audio ?
Positives
- The startup screen is the Toyota logo for all you JDM types.

Negatives
- No vehicle specific audio tuning (xA, xB, xC, xD, FR-S, etc)
- No SSP (feel, hear, etc.)
- No voice command button (picture); You get an eject button, and a pause/play button.

INSTALLATION

Tools

• 10mm socket with extension
• 8mm socket
• plastic pry tools
• stubby phillips screwdriver if you want to mount gps behind your gauge cluster
• zip ties for tidying up excess gps antenna cable

Procedure
- remove side and stereo facia
- pops out by hand

- remove oem stereo
- 10 mm socket with extension

- remove mounting brackets and reinstall onto display audio
- 8mm socket.
- Scion OEM “C” brackets for Display Audio
- Scion OEM brackets from your original Stereo

- remove gauge cluster: OPTIONAL IF YOU WANT TO MOUNT GPS ANTENNA BEHIND THE CLUSTER
- remove screw from hood
- pop out shroud, use plastic pry tools
- remove hood, pulls strait out
- remove two screws from the gauge cluster, pull strait out and unplug

- mount gps antenna
- my antenna was magnetized so i put it on a bracket behind the gauge cluster
- zip tie loose cables

-install the display audio
- make sure you plug your radio and gps cables into the ENTUNE module

- reinstall everything

-reset your entune module via service menu

- settings -> nav voice volume -> up down x3
- reset module and gps location

-drive the car
- The nav map wont update your location until you physically move in the car

- pair your bluetooth with your phone

- enjoy!

NOTES
TOYOTA DISPLAY AUDIO:
Positives:
- Bluetooth seems to work better for sending song information versus the original scion stereo. Pandora sends more information on my Samsung Galaxy S2.
- Phone capabilities are better; it’s much easier to use your phone book and history. Voice command on my Galaxy S2 sucks so I prefer to use Display Audio’s interface.
- The night lighting color matches the orange in the rest of the interior.

Negatives:
- The sound is pretty flat. The factory equalizer adjustment is a joke (low, mid high). I boosted some low end, and have used my phone’s built in equalizer to compensate. Not sure how much my brain is making up but I remember the original stereo sounding more full. I’d like to compare it to someone else’s OEM Scion setup.
- I would really like to reflash this thing to Scion’s programming. I’m sure there is some way to do it. If you have any info, please hit me up.

ENTUNE EXTENSION:
- Enables Navigation
- Enables texting capabilities for your phone. I haven’t tried it, seems pretty gimmicky.
- Entune Apps: Seems super gimmicky, only useful ones appear to be weather, traffic, Pandora and iHeartRadio

- Requires the creation of an online account to use the apps, which asks for a vehicle VIN. =(
- It has been recently made free. http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/12/t...s-entune-fees/
- Operates in conjunction with an Entune app for your phone. I hear the app sucks, go figure.
- Entune is an upgradeable system; requires the Entune app or dealer service. Priuschat has uploaded version 2.1.0. I hear it breaks bluetooth connectivity for some phones so I wouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade. I’ve also read that it forces the use of the Entune app, which is not compatible with all phones. I would avoid it for now.

-I’m wondering if this can also be reflashed to become Bespoke with Aha. I’m not sure how much difference there is but both extension boxes are made by Harman and look similar, so I’m guessing the hardware is the exact same. If you have any info, please hit me up.

I just updated from an ancient 1.8.4 to 3.2! And I'm happy to report that it fixed my Pandora issue (wouldn't play high quality audio).

Just like the instructions say, download the files and copy the iso + txt to a flash drive titled 14A. Start your engine and plug it in, follow the directions on screen and wait!

I'm assuming you have to have EnTune already and not AHA?

You could try but it probably won't work. I'm pretty sure the hardware is identical but the update probably checks if it's the correct system. The update identified my Entune version prior to installation.

I now have iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com , and OpenTable. From what I can tell, Aha has more functionality than Bespoke. *shrughs* I've never used it.

Sorry, I misread your post. No, I do not have the Scion Aha extension box. I have an Entune extension box out of a Toyota.

Has anyone changed the start up screen for the 14 unit using this method?

Is this effectively the same as the '14 Bespoke unit? Based on the user manuals, it appears to be the case.

Shame that the FR-Ss are essentially still using the original Toyota Entune units. I have the latest Entune unit on my '14 Rav4 and it is quite the upgrade (higher res screen, little more user friendly, more user friendly nav, better and more capable voice commands). I much prefer it to the 7" HDD Entune unit that is in my '12 Prius v Five (advanced tech package).

My Toyota unit? It's a 2012 corolla entune unit, it might be the same as your Prius V. I think it's the same, I know it's the same one as the Prius C.

Is your Rav4 unit one of the systems with a custom dash integration? Or is it a standard DIN style one? All the scions use the double DIN style head unit, so until the Toyota corporate double din gets upgraded then no dice. I'll keep a look out though, this screen is ancient tech.

My v has the 7" unit. HDD based instead of flash like yours and all the new ones. It was sort of a relic that had Entune adapted to it.

Rav is integrated, but I'm more talking about the software rather than the physical unit itself. Looking through the Scion manuals, the screens look almost identical to the '12 Camry Display Audio and Display Audio with Entune units. Basically, if you've messed with a '14 FR-S bespoke, how similar is it to the '12 corolla Entune you have?

I guess we'll see if the soon to be released '15 models get a new radio.

I understand what your saying, and I also believe that Toyota is controlling Entune revisions also with hardware. I've flashed to the latest version, but I think the "real" upgrades will require improved hardware and Toyota will not put a lot of effort into legacy support. This won't be like how Apple keeps providing new versions of iOS to older phones. I specifically say this because I can't buy your unit and stick it in my FRS because it wont fit.

It's hard to track revisions. Toyota has some vague explanation of an Entune/ Entune Plus/ Entune Premius / JBL Entune Premium. http://www.toyota.com/entune/

I actually just traded my Toyota unit for a Scion unit ('14). The base display audio is virtually identical from what I can tell, minus some additional programming for things like the stereo settings (which makes a dramatic difference in sound quality), voice command button, and lack of XM radio on the Scion unit.

I kept my entune extension box. I haven't use an Aha box so I don't personally know what the difference is. I think most of the functionality is identical, like the entune apps, but you may not need to run a phone app anymore for it to connect. Can anyone else chime in?

It looks like the new 2014 Corolla has the same 7" screen as your Rav4. I looked at the 2014 Yaris, Haha! It looks like the old 2013 Scion base stereo unit.

I would watch to see if there is an updated unit put into the Prius C. It should be due for a mid model update in a year or two. I don't know if they will keep the dash the same, or switch over to the integrated design like the Rav4/Camry/Corolla. Scion would probably get it a year later.

I think this is a major failure on Toyota's part; how can Scion be your youth division if it keeps getting last gen HMI/Telematics ? Then again, Toyota products have been gutting Scion for a while now; cars like the Yaris (xA, xD, iQ) and Corolla (sort of tC) have been directly competing with Scion's lineup for a while now.

Hi everyone...hopefully someone here can answer this question.

I just bought a 2015 Scion FR-S....it came with a Pioneer BeSpoke. It has Bluetooth...But I guess it's just the basic package because it doesn't have the navigation or backup camera. My question is this: what exactly do I need to do to add a backup camera and navigation on the unit that is already there? All I really want is a good sounding system with backup and navigation.

You buy a camera, there's a bunch of options on the forum. I bought the beatsonic: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41673 . You will need to buy extra wires, some crimps, and have some soldering stuff. It takes a while to run the cable all the way to the back but it's not too bad and will teach you stuff about the car.

If you want nav, you need to buy a nav module (bespoke or entune), gps antenna, and brackets. There are some people already selling assembled kits, like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2014-Scion-b...ed1e41&vxp=mtr

I need some help i have a 14 scion Xb head unit and toyota extension box PT296-47120 EA. I can't get it to work, i don't know if it is compatible or if i need to reset the radio, Thanks

I did same Setup from audio sound wise. i believe the amp is not turning on that is why its does have a louder volume.

Confirmed that this radio has nothing coming out of pin 9 on 10 pin harness. which is brown on main harness. just spliced it together with acc wire on top of it and all is good. small red wire

Because the OP had to slightly modify the plug on the 'for Toyota' GPS antenna he found on eBay, I'm guessing that this HU actually has the same kind of socket as on all of the BRZ Fujitsu Ten nav HUs. I can't say for certain, because I didn't find a good picture of the back of this HU (hint -- could somebody post one?).

BRZ (and other recent Subarus) use a socket that Fujitsu Ten has been using on many of their Eclipse HUs (both aftermarket and OEM). There are eBay vendors selling GPS antennas with the proper plug. Here's one with good close-up pictures of the plug (I have no relation to, nor do I know anything else about that vendor).

You could also go with an OEM GPS antenna from Subaru -- ones intended for BRZ or most other 2008-2014 models (Impreza, WRX, STi, Forester, Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback). All of those have the same Eclipse-style plug. Subaru did change to a different connector on the latest models (e.g, 2015 Impreza, Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback).

If anyone wants to go with the Scion HeadUnit, pm me. I have one available that came from an FRS. I'm currently playing with the Scion AHA Nav module and comparing it with my Entune 5.2 unit. I should be deciding shortly which I will keep.

I'm working on this.

• The FCC ID and IC# of both are identical, leading me to believe they are literally the same box.
• If I try to flash the most recent software, there is no explicit incompatibility listed, only a warning that the version is too old:

I've been digging into the code (I have many years experience as a software developer) but no luck so far. Simply firing up the 'ol hex editor to change the version from number is ineffective, as I believe there is a checksum validation on the image file taking place; any modification, no matter how slight, results in an immediate "authentication error" when trying the update.

I'll keep hammering away at it - I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible.

Let me update my efforts with a bit of information:

1. Virtually all Harmon devices have identical hardware. In theory, *any* module can be flashed to any other module (Bespoke, NAV only, Entune with or without other apps, etc).

2. A process known as "authenticationService" is kicked off to verify the installation; if this process does not somehow agree that the software you are trying to update is unmodified (you can change minor things, but not the version, which is the big one), the authentication process returns an error and blocks the update.

With that being said, I have no visibility into this authentication process, and it's probably crossing some legal lines to start modifying it (if I can even get that far), so I'm halting efforts. Maybe someone with a bit more familiarity with the code will eventually step in, but since this is a low volume/specialty item, I don't see that happening :(

Great! I ordered a head unit from a prius with the 47130 or 47121 module for $180, absolute steal. Just gonna pull it off sell the head unit then keep the navigation module

Sorry for the old thread revival but,

If I understand correcly, with a Toyota Headunit it give no power to the brown wire on the main harness. This wire turn on the OEM amp. It's only a 12V signal to trigger the amp ?

Without the amp turn on, it sound like crap from what I understand. With the amp turn on, does it sound great ?

Of course, the amp powers the door speakers.

Just to confirm, I've used a 2013 Corolla Nav unit and it's working really well in my 2015 Scion FR-S. You only have to tap the Red 12V Ignition wire onto the Brown AMP signal to power up the amp and it sound like it should.

It's even better now, since it have an equalizer !

For French Canadian, you will loose the french language with an US radio.

hey guys, i just installed a Toyota bluetooth/touch screen head unit from a 2015 Yaris (model number PT546-52150, with codes AXCP-Q15U & T10028 on the front) into my 2015 Scion FR-S (the stock head unit thatbwas on my FR-S was also a very similar bluetooth/touch screen unit).

I badically switched to the Toyota unit as a last step to get rid of any Scion stuff on my car (have pretty much changed everything to Toyota on it). So yeah JDM ftw! lol

However, as noted before on this thread, compared to the Scion head unit, the sound coming from the Toyota unit is flat and it doesn't sound as good. Even trying to use the equalizer doesnt really improve the situation.

Obviously I'd like to keep the Toyota unit on the car... How can I make the audio as good as the Scion unit though?

I see some previous posts where you guys mention an update to the software as well as modifying one of the stock connectors (believe I understand that one of the wires in the FR-S's stock connectors doesnt work with the Toyota units and this causes the bad sound?)...

With that said, would updating or changing the software resolve this issue? Can I do this software update myself? Or I do need help from a dealer? And if I can do this alone, how do I update the software?

My plan is to put in the back up camera and one of the Toyota navigation modules in later as well. Would adding the navigation module be another solution to this sound issue? (BTW if anybody knows a specific Nav module I should use for this Toyota head unit, would much appreciate if you could provide the part number or from what year and model car I should look for!)

Or is modifying/splicing the wires on the stock connectors the only solution to improving the sound? I'd rather not mess with the stock connectors as I have no experience in doing this...

Would there possibly be any plug and play solution to this? Perhaps a small adapter harness? (Plug the Scion connector into the adapter and the adapter to the radio?)

So, from the entune update file it looks like it might be possible to root these head units and install out own software onto them. I'm thinking something like Kodi or something like that.
