What tape do you use to protect your front end on track days?

I've got a track day coming up and I'd like to protect my front end. What tape do you guys suggest?

I run mine naked...and it shows :)

TSY 10-14-2013 03:56 AM

i use this:

http://www.trakktape.com/

Easy to put on and take off. clear so your car doesn't have all that blue painter's tape all over and looks better. My car is white so orange cone stains don't come out easily so this stuff is great.

Stevo22 10-14-2013 08:13 AM

Has anyone ever tried using plasti dip like this video shows:

I've never had orange cones leave orange marks :curious:

Is this because you don't hit them :D? I have had them leave marks, but it is more like a film that rubbed out with some detail spray.

Not at all. Im usually on trial for cone murder at the end of an autox event. Cones, in my experience, leave black/grey marks. Never had orange residue. I usually have to use a clay bar and lots of elbow grease.

This is what I use. Been using it for the past 10 track events, and my front-end still looks great. It's expensive, unless you buy it by the gallon. I figured it's about $7 per track day, with the amount I use.

Do you do one layer of it or do you layer it on? How easy is it to remove?

ModBargains.com 10-14-2013 03:19 PM

Blue painters tape usually works for me. Takes some time to do, but it'll save you from rock chips :)

mrk1 10-14-2013 03:25 PM

my car just wears the scares of cone contact, more of the blemishes are from tire clag

I always put on 2 layers. First layer takes about 5-10min to put on, second layer takes even less. It goes on much quicker than tape (what I used to do). I'm not sure I could go back to tape now.

As for removing it, it takes a little longer. If you peel up a corner, you can usually get it 90% off in a single sheet. It peels up like saran wrap...kind of a plastic/rubber feel to it. The remaining 10% are typically small areas. I've found that spraying a little ONR/water mist over the entire area helps remove the protectant. I'd say it takes me 20min to remove it all.

What is the drying time?

I think it depends on the outside temp, humidity, etc... I always apply it the night before a track event, and I'm good to go. It rolls on white, then becomes transparent as it dries...usually within 10-15min. I'd guess that it's fully dry in a few hours.

And I'm guessing you don't use a hair dryer?

Thanks for sharing.

I don't use a hair dryer. I'm in a warm area (Southern California) with very little rain. Whenever I prepare for a trackday, I get my car ready the night before. So, I always have a good 24hrs for it to dry...which is more than enough time. With that said, I've heard of some people using a hair dryer to speed the drying time.

I have a few light orange-yellow marks from where I moved some cones I didn't like with my bumper. :D

But you're right, most of my cone strike is black.

z3ro 10-16-2013 07:41 AM

As in the hot rubber that leaves streaks all over the front end?

I have had good luck with a non-abrasive auto polish, comes right off.

Most places that sell Mothers stuff should have it. Target and Wallmart both have it in my area.

Curious as to how effective this is. Anyone have any personal experience?
