brz meets tree...

2 Attachment(s)
long story short. I came around a corner on a windy road I didn't know and the roads were wet and I had less traction than I thought and I spun out and went backwards into a tree. thankfully I didn't hit any other cars and both myself and my passenger are ok. the car had only 30,000kms and was a great car. It saddens me she is gone but on the bright side im getting a Satin White Pearl Sport Tech soon as my replacement in the next week or so and am going to be way more careful.

sklimo 10-08-2013 03:26 PM

Holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am really glad you guys are ok!!!!!!!

kakarot1657 10-08-2013 03:26 PM

was there a fire the bumper looks melted.

KEL-BRZ 10-08-2013 03:31 PM

thanks and ya im glad we are both ok to besides a little whiplash and stiffness. and no there was no fire. the car still would start and everything after as well there is just way to much frame/body damage to be worth fixing. the main thing is we are ok though as cars can be replaced, its just sucks cause these cars are beautiful its a shame to see any crashed or in the salvage yard.

kakarot1657 10-08-2013 03:34 PM

Well one thing you can take away from this is the airbags and side airbag curtains worked.

KEL-BRZ 10-08-2013 03:44 PM

ya surprisingly the only air bag that did go off was passanger side curtain. and it didnt smack my friend in the face which was nice. it could've been a lot worse if we hit on the side of the car or something instead of the back.

Diode Dynamics 10-08-2013 03:46 PM

Wow! Glad to hear that you are ok!

You must have been going pretty fast to smash the rear that hard

KEL-BRZ 10-08-2013 03:57 PM

i wasn't going that quick but for the road conditions and road I obviously was. The car did a good job of taking most of the impact. I was actually a little shocked when I got out walked around to the rear and saw how bad it actually was. The back is messed but it crumpled in well and not to far into the trunk pan area either. if I had passengers in the back seat it wouldve been painful for them but im sure they would've been ok as well definitely well designed car and good crumple zones.

Agreed, crumple zones do tend to make things seem much worse sometimes.

Also, sorry about your car, glad you're ok.

Red FRS 10-08-2013 10:37 PM

Damn glad you're fine. That's insane!

edit: sell me your ebrake lol :)

sprintertrueno86 10-08-2013 10:51 PM

Glad you and pass. walked out ok. Was your t/c on when it happened?

Mr. 10-08-2013 11:36 PM

If you can keep the car / buy it back for 500 and sale OEM parts like doors vents, trim, whatever. And make the next ride super bad add. Glad you are ooook

BRZPDX 10-09-2013 12:31 AM

Sorry to hear about your loss..

Will you be parting out the car?

Shimmyshake 10-09-2013 12:37 AM

Glad to hear your ok! I'm in BC also...guess those beautiful BRZ headlights are gone....i would love to buy the headlights if they're still good heh

KEL-BRZ 10-09-2013 01:29 AM

I wont be parting out the car. It was signed over to the insurance company (icbc) its there car now im asuming its at some auto wrecker in the surrey area now. I dont have the cash to buy back the salvage and im not to sure how that works either or if the parts would be worth it. Im just using my icbc payment and extra insurance from ultmarisksolutions and getting a new one next week.

glad you and your passenger came out safe!

Thanks for sharing...

The stock BRZ is showing itself to be pretty hair trigger in the loss o' grip department where any trace of water or dampness is involved. I've had two such occurrences myself, originating in maneuvers that "should have been" about 70%, not really even going for it, hence total shock and awe. In my case roads were slightly damp in spots, tires fully warm. My previous performance cars have never had an issue like this.

My sympathy. There but for the grace of a few extra yards of asphalt, went I. My nannies were off (via trac switch, 5 seconds), fwiw. I don't think it would have made a difference either. My corrections are pretty quick and had very little effect. It's like one end or the other of the car (I've had one each) goes from full grip at 70% to almost zero, instantly.

This feels like a tire issue to me. My car has the HP Primacies.

The OEM tires suck in any wet conditions even if the TC/VSC are on. I can pull out of a driveway from a stop and get the back to come out if there is any water on the road.

Also, at speed in the wet they give no warning when they are going to let go.

Kimsey47 10-09-2013 04:36 PM

I'm calling insurance fraud! You just wanted a different color! ;)

J/K! Seriously though, glad you're both ok!

In a weird way it is nice to see that the safety features/crumple zones do their job and do them well. Makes me feel safer; however, still sucks to see the poor girl all mangled up.

SubiePig 10-09-2013 04:44 PM

Everyone blaming the cars for the wet handling issues not their driving changes in irregular conditions. I don't see spinning Prius's all over town when its wet. Even with 235's my car it will still kick around if you aren't careful.

Sorry to hear about your lose of the car, I would be pretty devastated. Glad you both are okay, accidents happen. :(

You cant compare a twins over steer with a Prius just because they have the same tires...

Can't blame the tires for drivers steering and throttle input errors either. ;)

Anthony 10-10-2013 09:10 AM

Well, it's like I always say... if you're going to suddenly unintentionally go flying off the road and into a tree, you might as well do a 180 in between so you can be slammed up against the seat instead of the seatbelt and airbags.

Actually, I've never said that, but I'm going to start. That's once.

This. A turn that I make every morning on my way into work caught me by surprise last week. Apparently, the roads were slightly damp, but you could not really see it physically. I made a left turn going the same speed I typically do (a bit quick), with the nannies on, and the front of the car was facing about 110 degrees instead of 90 degrees in the turn. Nannies kicked in... to late (my opinion) and power (to the wheels) was reduced. If the power had not been reduced, then I probably could have power slide through the turn instead of almost coming to a complete stop and having another car almost clip my back end

Oh well, lesson learned. And I am definitely getting some stickier tires when the OEM wears out. I know the car was made to slide, in a sense, but I would prefer to take more effort than this. But that is just me.

@ the OP: Glad you and the passenger are ok. Like you said. Cars can be replaced, lives can not.

ft_sjo 10-10-2013 10:24 AM

I think you guys need to learn how to drive. I've never had the VSC kick in under normal driving. You can't go around driving beyond your_ability/the_car/the_conditions and then complain the VSC didn't save your ass.

Hanni_0176 10-10-2013 02:16 PM

This post isn't directed towards anyone in particular. I've seen quite a few threads and articles so far regarding people losing control of their FT-86's.

I'm not sure how everyone is getting the tail out so easily with the nannies on. Before I started driving around with VSC Sport on, it was incredibly difficult to get the tail end out in dry conditions, requiring me to drive the car recklessly and purposely trying to slide the tail out.

I've read about several people losing control of the vehicle going 20 mph through corners. Really?

Even with VSC Sport, it still requires an effort on my part to kick the tail end out, via extra throttle and sharper steering than necessary for taking the turn. Again, dry conditions.

In wet conditions with the nannies on it gets a little easier, but even then, unless I'm giving the car more throttle during the turn than I should and/or turning sharper than I should for normal/safe driving, I've yet to slide.

With the nannies on, I have gotten the car to power slide on wet pavement, controllable and on purpose, but the nannies usually slow the car down way too much upon exiting the turn (and almost to a full stop on slower turns). Honestly, I feel more comfortable with VSC Sport on in wet conditions because of this.

With VSC Sport on in wet conditions, it is definitely easier to get the tail out. I imagine it's even easier with the nannies off completely. Still, if I'm driving normal/safely, I've yet to slide/skid/etc. Then again, I've yet to turn the nannies off completely (I use VSC Sport). But if you're not experienced with RWD in wet/snowy conditions, why the hell would you disable all of the nannies? Are people stupid, or just naive?

And if people are losing control of the vehicle with the nannies on, with plenty of tread life on their tires, dry or wet, and are claiming that they were driving safely and it was the cars fault, I'm gonna have to call :bs: Oh, and after you collect your insurances, please please please, don't go out and buy another RWD sports car... and NEVER get one with more than 151 ft/lbs of torque unless you plan on taking special driving classes first (like HPDE).

/end rant

Nice to see that the nannies still can't defy physics. OP was going WAY too fast for the road conditions. Don't blame his Prius tires.

You don't need a Lambo to spin like that... had the exact same thing happen to me on a 150hp FWD VW :laughabove: (granted it was raining and I had tires with little tread left).

Takeaway: always drive judiciously.

chulooz 10-10-2013 08:41 PM

So how much would insurance charge you to buy back the car in that condition?

ZionsWrath 10-10-2013 08:52 PM

I'd imagine a considerable amount, looks like the entire front half cut is salvageable for parts. plus a large portion of the interior.
