Clear Coat is totally F****d up.

All the various droppings, seeds etc... have left numerous marks on my clearc oat, even after careful washing. The hard to see and photograph, they appear as slightly more whitish blobs than the background clear coat, kind of like stains. I have never had this happen on a car before.

Burrcold 10-03-2013 02:32 PM

Why is this under recalls/TSBs?

Razz 10-03-2013 02:42 PM

Because they didn't make a seperate thread for warrenty/recalls.

They added issues to the thread title.

This is an issue.

It would be nice if it was seperate as in most forums.

King Tut 10-03-2013 03:14 PM

Normal.

tech4pdx 10-03-2013 03:31 PM

It is clearly NOT normal, but it is the subpar quality of Subaru paint.

ubersoph 10-03-2013 03:35 PM

Uh... normal. Just clean up the crap/etc before it etches the paint. Only thing you can do to address this.

Normal quality of Subaru paint then. You happy?

ExtremeAutowerks 10-03-2013 03:43 PM

Repaint it, wait a few weeks then opticoat it. Our detailer does an amazing job on Opticoating

Sounds like an extremely expensive solution to a factory issue.

Try taking to the dealership you bought it from. Maybe they will/won't laugh at you.

Repainting isnt cheap, lucky for me i got half my car repainted after an accident, and that paint held up nicely. Another thing you can do is detail it, and opticoat or clearbra it.

Draco-REX 10-03-2013 04:16 PM

Have a detailer give it a full correction. Then, I'm told Opticoat helps with stuff like this, maybe get that done to the car after.

It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Precisely why I don't put woman's clothing on my car.

glorydays 10-03-2013 07:07 PM

sounds like someone's car needs to have an "accident"

I got the full bumper, full hood and full fenders done. All areas look perfect still.

Gunman 10-03-2013 08:30 PM

I had some bird stains on my hood, and roof. Sunday I washed the car, and then used a bit of cleaner wax, which helped, but it was still there. Tonight I hit it with Zaino Z-PC, and the stains are gone.

ronboogieon 10-03-2013 08:55 PM

After reading all the issues with Subaru paint, I knew I had to invest in opticoat and clear bra after I purchased the car.

Well, FRiSson, I wouldn't give up on it just yet.

I'd suggest you wash it with hot water and a dish soap (like Joy), to remove all the old wax.

Next rub it up good with a clay bar.

If you have any spots of tree sap, alcohol will take that off.

Then apply a good quality cleaner/wax.

If it doesn't look good, you might consider taking it to a professional auto detailer.

If it looks good to you, apply a coat of a high quality wax.

I hope you get er shined up ....

If your car isn't garaged/under covered parking, you may consider a car cover.

This type of treatment applies to "ALL" cars... not just subie paint, nor is this a defect from the manufacturer. I've owned 10 cars from different brands and their clearcoat all had issues with environmental contamination at some point in their lives... its all about care, maintenance and upkeep in order to keep it pristine.

This. As I said, normal.

tech4pdx 10-04-2013 12:52 PM

Clear Coat is totally F****d up.

Is it normal for the clear on this car to get gouged just by looking at it the wrong way? I barely had the car for a month and I acquired more chips in that time than I've had on other cars (different manufacturers). Cars that I had driven 2 years or more. Every "body and paint" guy I've ever talked to has stated that factory paint on certain cars is getting worse. Not normal.

If it is normal to the car, then it is normal. I have owned 4 brand new cars from 4 different manufacturers in the last 4 years, and I can tell you that every single forum complained of the same thing. Thin paint or orange peely paint threads are everywhere for every car.

jeebus 10-04-2013 04:34 PM

My paint seems to be holding up just fine? I wash every few weeks, wax every now and again. 23k miles so far. Sleeps in a garage but parks outside each day during work.

Grishbok 10-04-2013 04:48 PM

If you have white spots on your clear coat, thats not a fault of the paint quality, its the fact that acidic contaminents have found their way onto your clear coat.

Easy way to take the spots off is to do the following:

wash it
Clay bar it
wash it
use a rotary buffer and a light cut polish like menzerna power finish.
Buff it till the polish flashes over
wipe it off with a microfiber
inspect the results

If done properly youll get rid of any swirl marks etc as well, it will look like highly polished glass.

Same here. I've owned 4 new cars in 4 years (ranging from Japanese, to German, to Korean) and all had the same issues. Same complaints on every forum, and same recommendations from everyone.

TopGearSolutions 10-04-2013 05:21 PM

A wash with dawn and clay bar should be able to bring it back.

You will want to have the car polished and a wax/sealant applied on top to protect it.

If you need a specific direction on which products to use I can help.

Someone else mentioned opti-coat and that would be a great addition to protect the paint after you correct your issue.

Razz 10-04-2013 05:35 PM

If you don't like it...

There is only one way to prevent it.

Consistent wash and waxing.

Waxing will prevent or reduce the damage to where is is an easy fix.

How much was that? Maybe we could all just take that and pay $500 more on our cars new and Subaru could do a decent job painting them. That way my clear coat wouldn't scratch when I run a brand new microfiber towel over it.

It wasn't cheap, but well worth it. I had full paint correction and opti-coat done at the same time. I think the clear bra portion was about $1k

I do wash and wax the car, and remove bird droppings when I see them. The clearcoat develops marks very quickly.

thill 10-04-2013 08:14 PM

Our 2013 Honda Odyssey has the same paint issues. I think this is an issue with almost all new cars. I wash my car weekly, and more frequently if the birds hit it. You cannot let this type of thing sit.

I went with a clear bra on the front bumper, partial hood, and side mirrors. There are a few minor chips here and there, oath wise the car looks good as new. I am a big fan of Optimum spray on wax.

And i bet you named your car something epic like billy right? Not something stupid like Lola. Cause only something like Lola deserves woman clothing.

DylanFRS 10-05-2013 10:03 AM

Anyone else also have problems with their clear bra scratching? If I get a bug on here and really have to scrub it with a sponge, I definitely end up with a scuffed area on the clear bra.
