Gear display & shift up indicator on/off (manual trans cars), tach sweep on/off (on startup)

S is for the tach sweep. G is for the gear display & shift up indicator.

The shift up indicator isn't the shift light, it just tells you when to shift for the best fuel economy.

G is for gravity, really a cool mode for doing stunt. You can do a lot of new things with no gravity.

S is for suction. Basically the car gives you a blowjob.

I bet you want a BRZ now.

Must be happy hour for some of us ;)

By far the funniest post I've read not counting the random images...

This, and it all this is in the owners manual linked elsewhere. I think its kinda cool that you can turn on/off tach sweep, set a shift light and when in the rpm range it comes on.

Enemies 04-06-2012 06:01 PM

S off is an abomination. Who in their right minds would turn the tach sweep off?!

Get out you two. Get out now.

Bristecom 04-06-2012 06:37 PM

Does anyone know if it will have average MPG and miles until empty on there?

ashtray 04-06-2012 06:40 PM

I like how you can do a tach sweep while you're driving, there's a control switch on the floor by your right foot. :D

If S mode is only for fuel eco thing then no, I don't need car to tell me when is best time to shift to get best MPG

No, pretty sure it's just when you start the vehicle. A full sweep of the tachometer. Has nothing to do with telling you when to shift. That might be G Off.

When I think of people using S Off what I'm really thinking is F Off... J/K. :)

Ah~ gotcha... either way, it doesn't matter to me IMO. sweep is cool and all... but it doesn't effect my driving one single bit lol

RRnold 04-06-2012 08:15 PM

Good thing the FR-S doesn't have a gauge sweep! It got old really quick with my motos.

Draco-REX 04-06-2012 08:50 PM

Not sure why someone would shutoff the sweep. I have it on my STI and while it's cool, I hardly notice it on startup now.

The Gear indicator is neat though. Yeah, it does the upshift thing, but that's easy to ignore. I just think it's really cool that it will display the current gear for the manual transmission.

Veloist 04-06-2012 10:05 PM

So the FRS doesn't come with tach sweep but the BRZ does?

I like the tach sweep, it's sort of inviting. my mom's xD has it and it's like starting a video game aha.

Draco-REX 04-06-2012 10:28 PM

I would be surprised if the FR-S doesn't.

Jeff Lange 04-06-2012 10:52 PM

I checked the manuals, and they only list the G-on/G-off function, no S- modes.

Doesn't seem like the Scion has it.

Me too. Turning both the sweep and the gear number/shift up indicator off are the first things I plan to do.

To me it's one of the most harmless things in a car... Like, hey look this thing has full range of motion. I can see people not caring one way or the other, guess I'm just a little surprised people would care enough to disable it. To each their own though!

Being able to turn these things off and on when you want -- that's the best part. So cool!

stateless 04-07-2012 09:36 AM

According to the manual:

The rev indicator (red line shift light) is different from the shift-up indicator, which I think is where some confusion comes in. By default the rev indicator is enabled and so is the sweep, but the shift-up indicator is off.

The shift-up indicator does not have a sound and it does not use the red line shift light by the tach, it just displays a gear number with an arrow where the gear number is normally shown and indicates which gear you should be in for the best fuel economy. Each time it changes it flashes three times.

On both the manual and automatic the current gear is always shown and this cannot be turned off. This is a separate function from the shift-up indicator but displayed in the same space.

The rev indicator flashes and there is a buzzer when the red line is hit. It can also flash and play the buzzer at an rpm before the red line (2000 - 7400), which can be customized. Even if it is customized, it will still flash at the red line. The buzzer can be turned off with the rev indicator light still activated, or both can be turned off.

Tach sweep sounds fun but pointless. Shift light at redline is cool, but I will definitely turn off the buzzer. My RX-7 had a buzzer and it drove me insane!

The gear indicator blinks three times to show you what gear you should be in for best efficiency? That sounds annoying. My Audi shows the efficient gear in green next to the actual gear in white, but it doesn't blink at me... I imagine the boxer will be loud enough so you know what gear you're in most of the time, unlike the Audi which is so frikkin' quiet I can be doing 80mph in 3rd and not notice.

Did I miss the FR-S manual? I have the BRZ manual but where do we get the FR-S one? Thanks.

He has access to Toyota employee/dealer network TIS which has it posted.

My Defi gauges in the ITR do it and it annoys me every time I drive the car. To me it's just pointless movement and motor usage, or whatever moves the needle on oem gauges I guess :)

It's definitely interesting to get varying opinions on it. I guess it's best to never take anything for granted. You never know when a certain detail will bother somebody in some way.

dori. 04-07-2012 10:31 PM

Personally, I think the fact that these things are included in the car and can be turned on and off at the user's discretion is great.

I know I'm going to leave all that shit on. I like the tach sweep, and will probably use that 'shift up for best economy' light for the first couple hundred miles

FitchAlcyone 04-07-2012 11:06 PM

I wonder why they opted to only have the sweep on the tachometer, though. My Legacy has a sweep for all gauges, so this will be an "adjustment."

I don't even notice it in my STi anymore (I've owned it for about 2 years now).

To be fair the Defi's also do a bit of a light show, which definately makes them even more annoying. There's probably a chance I wouldn't notice just the sweep without all the lights.

Either way, they let us turn it off so I won't even need to worry about it :)

zohare 08-25-2012 11:10 PM

Mine came on after setting the shift light. I thinks it's kinda cool. Don't care too much either way. I like it though. And most of the time, the engine is too loud at WOT to hear the shift beep... so to those who find it annoying, shouldn't be a huge issue, especially with an exhaust.
