Faint Honking sound

Just starting to notice a faint Honking sound comming from my engine bay (I think) when accelerating from a stop at around 4.5/5k consistently. Sounds like a car horn almost. It's pretty quiet.

When I was at Toyota of Tacoma getting an oil change the service lady there was very well informed on all the recalls and TSB's for this car. She said that she had a customer with an FRS that honked when she shifted (m/t). It was the first I had heard of this but apparently it's real. However, she said there's simply not enough instances of it occurring, there is not TSB for it, in fact they have no idea why it's occurring.

Visit your dealer, have them drive the car.

Is it this: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19308

Raven604 09-30-2013 03:14 PM

yep its definitely that noise... doesn't seem to be a solution for it yet. thanks

BRZNutt 11-11-2013 08:29 PM

I had noticed the faint honking sound during acceleration once or twice when the weather was warm. Now I get it every day. Any updates on this? I can live with this goose and the crickets as long as I know it is not causing any damage to the engine. I really don't want to take my car to the dealer (ever).

edward 11-12-2013 11:45 PM

I have this issue intermittently. So far nothing has fallen off the car...

Bad Habits 11-13-2013 01:20 AM

Yes! A goose!

It makes me laugh. :)

Nobody at the dealership is touching my goose, either.

andrew20195 11-13-2013 02:39 PM

I had the "honking" noise for awhile, probably between 1000-3000 miles or so (I don't remember exactly). I'm at about 7000 miles now and it doesn't seem to make that noise anymore. It's definitely clutch related.

Possibly just a funny wear in noise on the master cylinder or clutch linkage is my bet.

Edit: Then again, could be temperature related. I'll have to see now that we've had a cold front come through.

Burninator 11-18-2013 01:35 PM

I have my FR-S in the shop today for the same exact problem. Same noise as in http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...05&postcount=4 .

Funny thing is, I was able to get the noise while parked, gear in neutral, and the clutch pressed all the way in and revving to 3k RPM - not just while driving or accelerating /shrug.

Burninator 11-25-2013 04:34 PM

Just wanted to post back here with what the dealership found. After 5 days in the shop with the transmission disassembled they replaced the throwout bearing (iirc in the service ticket it was labeled as a release bearing actually) because it was "slightly deformed".

I haven't heard the noise again since I picked it up, so I guess only time will tell at this point whether or not this was truly the problem.

I'll put up a scan of the service ticket when I get home later this evening.

radroach 11-25-2013 04:48 PM

I get goose honk / car horn sounds sometimes when shifting

rice_classic 12-21-2013 03:51 AM

bump

I have a goose under my hood now too. 29k miles. Manifested itself on a road trip through the Siskiyou mountains when it was 15F outside (very cold). Now it does around it around town sometimes.

It is definitely when the clutch is being engaged/disengaged in my situation.

I'm going to make an appt for after the 1st of the year to have it looked at. I was hoping it was something like the hydraulic valve or clutch delay valve but the throw out bearing? Damn. That sucks.

Mikem53 12-21-2013 09:54 AM

Lol.. I too get the faint horn honking sound as the clutch is being released..
Not all the time.. But it's there.. Doesn't feel or sound like anything is malfunctioning.. Just another weird ass noise from this weird ass little car..
I'm used to noisy sports cars.. And I don't mind hearing and feeling all the "feedback" this car has to offer... but this thing makes more strange ass noises than all my other cars put together.. :iono:

Luna 12-24-2013 12:10 AM

I have the honking noise too :( Only intermittently though and only when starting from a complete stop. You think the crickets are embarrassing...until you get the goose

I'm at 7k miles and I hadn't noticed it until recently.

Notso 12-24-2013 04:45 PM

any update on this? I'm just now getting this, annoying as all hell

So was the throwout bearing definitely the culprit?

If you are getting the same noise as in the video I linked in my first post, it seems to be the throwout bearing. I haven't had the noise come back since the dealer took the transmission apart, replaced the bearing, and put it all back together.

Mine doesn't honk, it makes a whooosh sound when I shift at 4500-5000 rpm. Might have something to do with my Perrin cold air intake and tune though.

That's how mine is too. Only from a stop, when shifting into 2nd or 3rd gear (sometimes both), and only when it's been 40-50 degrees outside. When it has been any colder or any hotter it doesn't make the noise. Normally it's only when you press the clutch in, but I actually had it make the noise when I was letting off the clutch the other day. I HATE THE FUCKING GOOSE.

Oh, and with the warm temps, the crickets are back. But really, the goose is worse.

Jesse36m3 04-09-2014 07:37 PM

Ok, so I'm not going crazy.

This is hilarious. The first day I got my brz I noticed this; I thought I had hit the horn when making a turn.

I thought I was going crazy, too. Just noticed it last month. Didn't know this was an actual thing haha

I also had the faint honking sound and this is what my dealership is repairing as well.

What? It's not an electrical problem.. It's a mechanical issue within the bell housing/clutch

Crap, i guess i shouldve read the thread first. I said that because when i first got mine i would honk the horn and it sounded faint. So i took it off sanded at the grounding point then threw it back on so it went away.:slap:

I get this sound when the clutch is fully pressed. At around an inch from the floor there is that faint honking like sound. It doesnt always do it but its starting to do it more often now.

Liebot 04-23-2014 07:40 PM

Well, my dealership fixed the throwout bearing and replaced the clutch...and still get THE GOOSE.

It's a mystery at this point...more details to follow tomorrow.

Any more details on this? Mine is doing it at 18000 miles and it's making me crazy! I always think someone is honking at me.

Well, I had it replaced again, still have the honking noise.

timfacchin 11-02-2014 03:30 PM

Just picked up a Certified Pre-Owned 2013 BRZ Premium. Having this exact issue...thought I was getting honked at my whole ride home. I have 22k miles on it.

Jond63 11-02-2014 08:21 PM

Will this cause any damage besides being annoying? I get the noise from time to time, figured it was just another quirk in this car's personality. And I'd rather not have my dealership take it apart if I don't need to...

Monogram, don't suppose you have any paperwork or write-up from the repair, do you? I'd love to go to the dealer armed with some decent information rather than let them rip everything apart to find their own fix.

Thanks!

timfacchin 11-05-2014 09:41 PM

Appreciate the advice. I'll probably show them this thread when I go in...I've only had the car for four days and am already sick of it.

Honk!

Ozzman 11-06-2014 11:15 PM

Mine started making this noise when the weather got cooler. First time I heard it I thought it was my horn honking. Usually happens when shifting from 2-3. After playing around with the timing on the throttle and clutch, the noise doesn't happen if I completely lift off of the throttle before depressing the clutch. I wonder if there is some lag with the electronic throttle allowing a little bit of rev when releasing the clutch and timing the throttle like normal. This slight rev causing the sound. But I could be completely wrong.

timfacchin 11-07-2014 12:00 AM

Sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing, Ozzman. I see it a bit from 1st-2nd too but more so from 2nd-3rd.

Complained about this, they replaced the spring clip. Went away for the whole of two weeks, now it's back again. :mad0260:

Thunderfox, going to go back?
