Hatch or Not?

Just wondering if people would prefer hatchback or not...

whaap 03-08-2010 08:19 AM

I would prefer a 2 seater hatchback just like my old CRX.

ft86cbx 03-08-2010 09:20 AM

I think id prefer it as a 2+2 hatch.

mike2100 03-08-2010 10:23 AM

I'd prefer whatever makes better sense from a performance point of view. It seems a coupe could be made stiffer because of the extra bracing behind the rear seats.

Nemesis 03-08-2010 10:35 AM

I said hatch, but only if they can use the current design. I know the current design is a standard trunk, but if it could be made into a hatch and still be stiff, then I would prefer the hatch because the hatch would make much better use of the space in the trunk and rear seats. It won't be the deal breaker for me though. I like the FT-86 as it is.

Midship Runabout 03-08-2010 11:20 AM

dont matter. as long as the looks stay the same

+1 my opinion too.

totally agree. The design remaining as close to this as possible must be a priority for any further developments between now and it's release.

RRnold 03-08-2010 12:57 PM

I would hope for both! A trunk and a fastback option!

zbirdman777 03-08-2010 01:43 PM

I like the hatch on my car, very versitile. It'd be nice to have one on the 86 but I wouldn't be crushed if it didn't have one.

zigzagz94 03-08-2010 02:40 PM

For all the reasons that I've mentioned in every other thread: Hell mother f'ing yeah I want a hatch....but don't change the looks of the concept drastically.

Franisco 03-08-2010 04:45 PM

Not a sportback but a hatch, yes

ichitaka05 03-08-2010 06:44 PM

Either works for me.... change into change, cool. kept it coupe, cool. Win win situation for me. lol

VenomRush 03-08-2010 07:31 PM

if it looks anything close to ichitaka's chop.. then i shall vote yes

About this.

What happened to the "I don't care" option?

NESW20 03-09-2010 12:19 AM

I'm with Nemesis on this.

No hatch for me either.

Lexicon101 03-15-2010 02:38 AM

The rear seats wouldn't work well with a hatch if they keep them how they are.
If they change the seats to lie flat, I'll take a hatch. If not, I don't see a point.

By the way, if I've got four passengers, I don't expect to be pulling crazy lateral gs around a corner, so bucket seats on the rear won't be necessary.

vh_supra26 03-15-2010 02:40 AM

If they can make a good looking hatch then maybe, why not. But I'm already in love with the current FT-86.

But for example, I personal think the Celica hatch (94-99) looked better then the Celica coupe.

In my opinion, that's true for all Celica generations. Toyota even had the good sense to choose a liftback for their 7th (last) gen Celica, and that only came in one bodystyle.

Ironically, lack of a liftback is one thing that may keep me out of this car. Why? Because I wouldn't want to by a coupe and have them come out with the liftback the following year. So every year, I would probably think to myself: "Better wait for the new model year."

fernan2 03-20-2010 12:50 PM

HATCHBACK <3

shaX 07 03-24-2010 10:35 PM

2+2 Hatch FTW!

TRDMAN 03-25-2010 12:07 AM

Fuck no

TRDMAN 03-25-2010 12:08 AM

I would have a new STI now if it wasnt a hatch

Well I guess, someone will be joining NASIOC next year and calling himself STIMAN instead. :bellyroll:

Jordo! 03-25-2010 01:29 AM

I love hatchbacks, but I thought having one added a lot of weight :iono:

Generally a hatch means a lot of rear window glass, which I thought could get pretty heavy :iono:

Then again, I guess there's always lexan :D

VenomRush 03-26-2010 05:32 PM

i thought a hatch added rigidy as opposed to sedan/coupe... maybe just compared to sedan

NESW20 03-27-2010 12:13 AM

i'm pretty certain a hatchback does not add rigidity in and of itself. maybe they reinforce cars that are hatchbacks (read: extra weight) to make up for the hatch. i still vote couple w/ trunk.

What about weight -- or is it difficult to make a direct comparison because of other structural differences between hatch and coupe?

For example, I think the Civic hatch is a bit lighter than the coupe variant, but as a general rule, I was under the impression that hatchbacks tend to be a bit heavier -- am I mistaken?

Of course, if it helps plant the rear wheels (on a FR), that isn't all bad...

dilly-o 03-27-2010 10:37 AM

i once owned a 2002 WRX wagon, which was 80 lbs heavier than the sedan, almost entirely due to the extra glass the hatch needed. but i think some of ya'll are thinking about an RSX style hatch, which I can't think would be much heavier than the coupe alternative.

Vizard424 06-13-2010 03:37 AM

Well as far as I know, as long as it looks like it could have a regular trunk, like the Scion tC, the hatch doesn't add much weight. In general a hatchback is heavier due to the extra glass and mechanics to hold it up, but if Toyota were to maintain the body style of the FT-86, the hatch wouldn't add much weight. The advantages then of having a hatch, besides the obvious versatile trunk space (if they used fold-able rear seats), is that suspension bars can be added to the interior frame of the car. Classic examples are the EG Civics with the interior cross bars that hold onto the hatch. Then you would have a much stiffer frame then compared to a regular coupe. Besides on a personal note, hatches look much better, especially to those that plan to out fit the car with a full audio setup.

Midship Runabout 06-13-2010 10:56 PM

Pics are up showing the concept car has a regular trunk.
