The JZ engine?

Instead of partnering with Subaru, why didn't Toyota just make the gt-86, fr-s , with the Toyota JZ engines? :iono:

tlp 04-06-2012 12:21 AM

They wanted to build a car with the lowest centre of gravity possible.

The boxer engine allows them to do this.

ichitaka05 04-06-2012 12:25 AM

When did AE86 ever came 6cyl engine stock?

toyota partner with subaru because they wanted to change the scion image

Revird 04-06-2012 12:35 AM

Would you rather have 80's technology in a car that would then be priced of 30k? or would you have current technology priced at a reasonable 25k?

czar07 04-06-2012 01:16 AM

because Supra in 2 years

Godzpeed 04-06-2012 02:32 AM

1JZ and 2JZ are both outdated heavy iron block engines thats inefficient and can't even comply with current emission standards

Sasquachulator 04-06-2012 03:53 AM

Because the engine has been discontinued for a long time now?

Great engine but it would have been a bad choice for what they wanted out of this car.

track_warrior 04-06-2012 09:42 AM

Because the car would be a fat ass!! This car is meant to handle if you want straight line power go buy a chevy or ford.

tripjammer 04-06-2012 03:23 PM

The boxer motors are pimp y'all! Just wait till you get to know it! In all due time we will get a turbo 2.0 motor. It will happen....

no it doesnt

Tainen 04-06-2012 04:06 PM

You know... we can overnight parts from Japan for flat 4 motors, too. :)

Linseal 04-06-2012 04:27 PM

They could have used the 2.5L 180HP tC engine. Just needs a little tweaking to bump it to 200 :). or the Lexus IS 250 v6, that would have been nice.

Xdragonxb0i 04-06-2012 05:29 PM

I believe Toyota has some stakes in Subaru. So economically it only make to team up to build a car.

They could but they should and would not.

You ever drive that engine? It's a lazy engine.....

And its actually a CAMRY engine, not a tC engine :D

But im bias since my car has the fun as hell rev to 8400rpm 2zzge.....

Guff 04-06-2012 06:39 PM

Toyota wanted something Lightweight, Affordable, and NA.

Putting a JZ would have broken all three of those rules.

My understanding is that Subaru went to Toyota looking for a joint venture. They pitched several ideas and the one that stuck was for a two door sport coupe. Subaru thought that it would be a slam dunk, but the Toyota engineers determined the design and Subaru did most of the engineering work. The Subaru engineers had to cow-tow to the Toyota engineers and they resented that but had no choice since the money came from Toyota.

You are mistaken.

Toyota pitched the sports car and Subaru didn't want to do it. Toyota chopped up a Subaru Legacy and made a proof-of-concept mule and used it to convince Subaru.

A little off topic, but I just realized this was the 2JZ-GE and not the 2JZ-GTE right?

Mehhhh

I don't think so...

After Toyota had gain aprox. 17% of Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru went to Toyota. They fought because Toyota wanted RWD and Subaru wanted AWD. Since Toyota provided the money, Subaru had to give in.

Old greg is right, toyota approached subaru after they came out of their most recent contract.

2jzge 04-10-2012 08:16 PM

It would be difficult for Toyota to resurrect a dead production line.

because it doesnt have the lowest cog. none of the production cars that come with the boxer do. im not even sure it has the lowest cog in its class

bFreed 04-11-2012 06:10 PM

JZ is just too much for that lil' 86 to handle. :) But no really, it is.

That's why Supras are big and heavy.

I don't know why I am replying to this...

Im thinking that a boxer engine would provide a lower center of gravity vs. an inline 4. Not that the vehicle has the lowest COG overall but again the boxer engine gives a lower COG than an inline format.

Often times an inline or v is more narrow and can sit lower in a car because of its shape

This pretty much, though one would wonder what a real modern "2JZ" would cost them, and Inline 6's are pretty much dead. Emissions and all that.

And HOPEFULLY THIS.

But they wouldn't have went "2JZ-GE/GTE" with this, more so "3SGTE" actually.
