Best tires to get for the 17x7 stock wheels

I'm sick of the stock tires, especially in wet conditions. I know the highest width you can run are 225 on these wheels. I need grip. What tires should I get?

DAMotorsports 09-22-2013 04:35 PM

We ran 235/40/17 on the stock rim with out any problems. that size keep the diameter just smaller then stock. the tire we used was Toyo R1R and the grip was amazing. however we did not see any rain. i have ran BFG G-sports in the past and never had any problems with the rain. they held up on the track as well. Tire Rack offers some great information and testing results also.

That's what I sell the most of.

ubersoph 09-25-2013 01:14 PM

Are you racing? If so I would go with Dunlop Z2s (can be noisy on highway but amazing steering feel/grip/etc), Hankook RS-3 (Not great in rain or cold temperatures), BFG Rivals (Not great in rain, best on concrete surfaces or warmer temps) or Toyo R1R (very fast treadwear).

If you are racing and want nice street manners I would go with RE-11A or the Yokohama AD08 R

If you are streeting Michelin Pilot Sports or Continental DW

Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Best street performance tire I have ever had. Worth every penny

CatDaddysBBQ 11-06-2013 01:23 PM

Not tried with this car, but had Hankook Ventus V12 Evo as my summer tire on my last car and was quite pleased with it, also not terribly expensive.

what is the difference between concrete and asphalt in terms of grip? All I know is there is 1 section of road curved where can drive in 4th easily but in the rain it is scary in 3rd. On asphalt I don't feel as much difference between wet and dry traction, i think. This is street driving so it might not even have merit since all roads are in different states of repair...

yokahama advan neova ad08r

yokahama ad08R stock size is WONDERFULLY GRIPPY !! Love my 86 even more now. Next small updates will be tighter / sportier bushings , lower lumbar support insert and that will be all for me.

I will 5th that recommendation. My only complaints are lower MPG and maybe too much grip? There is no more drifting at will at any street corner. The car is more safe but less fun. But in the rain the trade off is worth every penny i paid. IMHO the stock primacies are dangerous in the rain.

I run these in a 225 on 8" rims and awesome tire for these cars. Sexy tire too.

MPSS FTW!!!

ZDan 03-25-2018 04:59 PM

I ran MPSS on the FD for a while. Initially they were OK, after less than 2 years on the car they lost all grip. Weird experience that I haven't had with other higher-performance tires.

IMO, even at their best they're somewhat overrated. Personally I went back to the Extreme Performance category for street usage. Actually on the FD I went to Nitto NT01 DOT race tires for street/track...

On sizing, IMO 225/45 is a bit pinched on a 7" wheel, I'd go 215/45-17.

For street grip width is not as huge a deal anyway. And for street grip in the wet, narrower could be better.

Anyway, me, for street only usage on 7", I'd be looking at Hankook RS4 in 215/45-17. In Max Perf category I'd look at Conti ExtremeContact Sport and B'stone S04 before PSS. Actually I wouldn't even be considering PSS...

I had the same thing happen on mpss, but only about 8k-11k miles/2 years during that time and leading up to that they were sliding all over.
I bought the car with 3k and the previous owner might have used them the entire time of the 3k when je had it or possibly put them on right before selling.
I swapped them out with plenty of life in them at 11k because spinning out doing a u-turn wasn't fun if I didn't have control.

MPSS supposedly excels in the wet as well as dry... How does the Extreme Performance tires you've tried handle in heavy rain/puddles? I'm tempted to just buy a 2nd set of cheap wheels + summer tires, and save my all-season tires for winter time.

Mine were fine *until* they went "off", after which time they were the absolute worst tires for grip I've experienced.

Not bad at all. Of course with less void in the tread they are more susceptible to hydroplaning, replacing before getting to the treadwear indicators is a bit more important. And of course slowing down for standing water is always a good idea! Honestly it hasn't been an issue for me.

DarkPira7e 03-27-2018 09:46 AM

Should keep in mind the unique characteristics each tire has as well. If you just want more grip, you don't need the craziest tire, just something better. I run the Falken Azenis RT-615K+ as long as it's above 50 degrees f. Better than stock in the rain, better than most non r compound tires for flat out grip when heated. I've been running different revisions of this tires since 09. I've had the Dunlop StarSpec Z1 (before they became priced like a Michelin tire), I've ran Nitto NT05 and Yokohama S. Drives. There's one conclusion I've come to. You need to run them to find out the characteristics you enjoy most. I have no doubt that from watching people run the PSS it's the best all around tire. I love the sidewall stiffness on my Azenis for turn in, I also like that it does not gradually give away and slide prematurely, but it's very bad if you don't know the limit of the tire.

I'd honestly recommend going through some cheaper tires with different characteristics, and see if jumping from one set to another, you find yourself noticing nuances you enjoy or don't enjoy. $350 a set for cheap tires that will grip better than stock will be a better investment than $750 for a set you don't like and can't really re sell.

Just got some Bridgestone 225s on mine... well, 2 months ago; and man what an improvement.
It does make the car so much better all around - particularly in the wet!

I’m told these particular Bridgestones are a bit soft and won’t last as long, but I got a greeeeaaaaat price on them (35% discount) so I can live with that.

Nice

Man this thread is old. lol.
I've been running 225 Michelin PSS since the OP. They stick like glue.

jslack 03-28-2018 12:06 PM

OK Group. I can get any tire at 5% over cost and want to spend around 450-500 or so on a new set of summer tires. What you all got out there that you like?? Either a A/S or summer tire is fine too. I'm in the midwest so it does get hot out in the summer.

JD001 03-29-2018 09:06 AM

As the MP4s is unavailable in the UK in our OEM size I have decided to contact Michelin UK to see what's happening...

Response from Michelin:

Unfortunately the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4S is not available in 215/ 45 R17 , and it does not appear that they will be launched in this size any time soon either.

MICHELIN is happy to accompany you on every journey and would like to thank you for your confidence.

Best regards,Dora

I have General G-Max AS-05 245/40-17 size. Winter was just fine, rain traction is great. Summer driving is good too. Price is great, I would buy again.

Had MPSS, just got Firehawk Indy 500's. Awesome value.
