Anyone into folk metal?
 

Korpiklaani, Turisas, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Equilibrium, etc. etc. etc.?

I'm usually alone on this, but thought I'd ask.

Alestorm is great. Amon Amarth is probably my favorite in the genre.

Oh hey. Didn't really expect a response, especially not one that quick. Yep, I'm familiar with both of those bands.

I haven't really gotten much new music since 2007. Yeah, I've cherry-picked new albums from bands I already liked, but I haven't gone on a big downloading/discovering spree since then until this week. Rush is my favorite band, but this is my favorite genre. So I've just been downloading some new metal in general, when I discovered Orphaned Land. I like them a lot! They're not technically "folk" metal, I guess, but they're quite similar to Turisas, I think, in that they blend an old very distinct sound with metal. In their case, it's Middle Eastern/Arabic.

So... I'm wondering if anyone knows of some other bands I might like, based on this. Like I said, I'm kind of stuck in 2007 as far as having discovered any new bands since then. Orphaned Land has been around since like '92, but I'm just finding them.

If this is more helpful, here are some specific songs of the sound I'd like to find more of:

Those are just ones off the top of my head. If I was at my computer I'd have access to my
music and YouTube wouldn't be blocked. That should give you an idea of what I'm looking for. Some nice dramatic, epic, culture mixed metal with a healthy dose of traditional instruments or at least keyboards trying to sound like traditional instruments.

I love Alestorm. Don't really get into any of the other folk rock bands. But a buddy turned me onto Alestorm and I have a few of their songs on the iPod.

Shit makes me want to run around skyrim slaughtering anything I see.

I'll give those a listen and look through what I have when I get home. I've been listening primarily to EDM/Dub/Chillstep lately, but I had a decent bit of folk metal. I'm thinking off the top of my head... Lacuna Coil and Enslaved. But I think Frost has some elements of black/doom metal to it as well. Lacuna Coil maybe not quite the whole viking aspect, but more instrumental.. Nightwish lite, I suppose.

Oh, and uh.. Who can forget Dragonforce. :D Although I suppose that leans heavily toward power metal too.

Oh, here's a suggestion too. Dump those bands into Pandora. Sure it'll spit out some generic stuff, but occasionally it'll find something great that you can bookmark for reference later.

I heard a band from NY called "Ganstagrass" perform in Durham....blue-grass style music with someone rapping along with the band. It was actually really good.

I listen to Elvenking. They are pretty good.

Oh man, I love Dragonforce. Been a fan since way before Guitar Hero. I love me some Progressive Metal. But I wouldn't put them into the Folk/Viking genre. I wouldn't even count Amon Amarth as a Folk band at all, they're purely Viking Metal in my opinion. Most bands in this realm are a bit of both Folk and Viking, but some are more purists to either side. I'd definitely say Amon Amarth is too heavy to be considered Folky. Which is fine, but not the sound I'm searching for right now. Watch those videos I just posted when you get home, and that should give you a good idea.

The Profugus Mortis song doesn't really fit perfectly, I just threw it in there because it's one of my all time favorite songs. The violin is infuckingcredible, and the girl that plays it is stupidly gorgeous.

Oh, good job! I know I've heard of them, but to my surprise I actually don't have any of their stuff on my computer. Off to discover!

I really like their album Heathenreel. Skywards is one of my favorites.

I'm not into rap or bluegrass, but I might would like them. I like rich-sounding diverse music. I'm actually not a hipster, it's just the stuff I like never seems to catch on in the US. Even when it comes to more regular metal, I still don't like very many bands from the US. I can't name a single metal band that has a preposition in their name that I like. Or anything considered ______core.

Awesome, I'll look for that one first.

Anyone who says Dragonforce is anything other than power or prog metal is smoking crack.

Oh, nice! Man, this reminds me of the list I'd made on MySpace. It was similar to this. I created a MySpace account called Heavy Folking Metal and it actually became really popular. It had thousands of friends and bands from all around the world were emailing me asking to be added to the list. I had it divided up by countries. It was pretty thorough. Son of a bitch! I wonder if that still exists...

EDIT: Well, the account still exists, but of course dumbass MySpace ruined it. I may still have the list on a hard drive somewhere. And apparently the account still has 1,100+ friends. Oh, I don't want to say it's not a fun show. They definitely have stage presence. But they don't tune, lose the beat, and as mentioned, are drunk a lot of the time.

Just because a band sucks live doesn't mean the whole show sucks. :D

I've seen Finntroll live 6 times. Dragonforce 0 times. Even with this bad review, I'd still be excited to see them. If they were sucking a quarter of the way through the show, there's a simple solution for that: alcohol. Now they're the best thing ever for the second half.

I haven't been able to see Amon Amarth live, but since it's been mentioned I might as well give my story..

Friend of mine went to a big metal show years ago, and they were playing. He comes back and says "that's the most fucking metal dude ever. He growls even while he's talking."

I saw Cannibal Corpse live for the first time, and we were a bit late for the show. We walked in after the first song was already going. As we were walking in, I was thinking, "Ok. This is it. This is going to be the most metal metal ever!" As I was squeezing my way towards the front I got to the border of the rear of the mosh pit, and some dude was making his way out of it frantically. His face was basically made out of blood at this point. No doubt his nose wasn't obliterated. My thoughts, "wow, I've seen that before but never within the first minute of a show! This is going to be great!"

I like to be up front, and I'm also all about shortcuts, so I cut through the pit to get there. Just before I was out, some dude directly in front of me took an accidental elbow to the face immediately proceeded by a House of Blues slab to the face. Out as fuck. "YES!!! This is going to be CRAZY!!!!!!" or so I thought.

The rest of the show was pretty disappointing. It was the gnarliest first 30 seconds of a concert ever, followed by about an hour of, "meh..."

Can't explain it.

Amon Amarth is on my list of want-to-see's-but-haven't.

I have no desire to get my face kicked in at a concert, nor to kick anyone else's face in. Never understood what was so metal about senseless violence.

Most of the time I go to shows, it's for the music. I'm not really into mosh pits.

But... sometimes... I just like to have a completely ridiculous experience. You don't see Cannibal Corpse casually.

Only if it falls into the black metal side, all of the time its get to cheesy for me.

It's pretty much the Dungeons and Dragons of metal. Not for everybody, and definitely pretty nerdy most of the time. I love the hell out of it, though.

Hahaha Swashbuckle. The first time my friend and I saw them, we thought they were saying, "high five! White guys!" every time they said, "high five! Plank dive!" So everytime they said, we'd high five. We were the only ones in the whole venue doing that, and we thought everyone else just didn't get it.

We were talking to the singer after the show and told him what we were doing, and that's when informed us of actual lyrics. We made sure to high five during that song every other time we saw them after that. It's high five, white guys, as far as we're concerned.

I was pretty into folk metal at one point. Eluveitie is def one my favs. But I'm hearing a lot of female vocals in folk metal nowadays though - not really into that.

Ah! I feel your pain. There have been so many songs I've heard for the first time and for the first minute or so, I'm all, "yeah!" then the singer(s) just ruin it. I'm fine with female vocals and/or the choir sound, but there are just some times when it doesn't work. That's most of the time in these situations.
