What's your STi?

1 Attachment(s)
Until the true STI comes out, what components would you use to build your own "STi"? This means better handling, better performance, better looks, but not sacrificing the former. Also, should look stock - no unmatched parts, wires and cables running around the engine compartment, etc. Last, cost is a constraint - something someone would pay for an "STi".

This is a thought experiment. There's no reason to wait for the STi if you can build it, right?

1 1/2 in lower?
17/18 8.5" front
17/18 9.5" rear - too wide? if so, how to get sortaflush?
Big brakes or just upgraded slotted/steel lines/better pads?
Innovate SC or other turbo?
KW Coilovers or less expensive fixed height coilovers ok?
Effective but not gaudy rear wing
Stylized tail lights
Front splitter, rear splats, side rockers
Side mirrors?
...

strat61caster 09-18-2013 10:52 PM

None because I own a Scion.

campy 09-18-2013 11:02 PM

pretty sure STI stands for Super Turbo Insaaaaaaaaaaaaane

BTW they already made an "STI" version called the "TS" version or something.

Squishy86 09-19-2013 12:05 AM

Chlamydia. Chlamydia is my STI.

Wow. Cant believe it took a whole 3 posts. Lol

Anyway. I think you cant lower it more than an inch. Anything else loses function and wouldnt be on an sti model. I think the ts will pretty much be it, but for the cost its only worth it to "build your own" if you were going to go aftermarket for those itemz anyway. Otherwise the sti is usually the cheaper version.

Diff springs/struts. Bigger sways. Better brakes. More power through intake, exhaust, and ecu esentially. Oh, and a big ass functional wing. Haha

Wise 09-19-2013 12:48 AM

Herpes twice... and the clap.

Burrcold 09-19-2013 12:50 AM

Until the STi comes out? In the form that you posted, you'll be waiting a loooong time.

STi = Subaru Technica International

ts = Tuned by STi

Well if you already knew what I was going to say Mike, why'd you ask?

1 1/2 in lower
18 8.5" front
18 9.5" rear - too wide? / or 18x 8.5 square...
Big brakes with steel lines/better pads...
Innovate SC or other turbo!
fixed height struts
Effective but not gaudy rear wing
Side mirrors...This is street legal, right?

(I could perhaps live without)
Stylized tail lights
Front splitter, rear splats, side rockers

SC or Turbo is a pipe dream, really... no pun intended! :party0030:

m.wood0213 09-19-2013 01:41 AM

This would be my plan:
Buy all legit STi body parts from japanparts.com.(minus the big wing)
Get upgraded catted headers (FA20Club, or Nameless)
ECUTek tune
Get the STi muffler and use the JDM tips.
STi springs
STi strut tower bar.
Wilwood bbk and put STI stickers on them.

BOOM homemade USDM BRZ STi/tS!

Oh really? I have Sciobaru also ;) When I mean STi I mean OEM++ or whatever you want to call it.

BTW, I don't see the STi concept as that far fetched. It's not slammed, doesn't have a whole body kit.. it's just upgraded.

Speaking of upgrades, I was confused looking at brake size:

FR-S/BRZ Specs: VENTILATED DISC 11.6 IN. / VENTILATED DISC 11.4 IN.

BRZ Premium Global: 16" / 15"
http://www.subaru-global.com/13brz_spec.html

Those are pretty big brakes for 17"s no? Is that a typo?

Obja 09-19-2013 01:56 AM

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Tromatic 09-19-2013 02:05 AM

You build is incomplete without several dozen decals.

mike_ekim1024 09-19-2013 02:45 AM

It sounds like people would be happy with a header and a tune if not FI. I don't think there's any options for us in California is there?

I'm happy with my FR-S, but some hypothetical builds... If you start going forged wheels and LSD upgrades.. well, that will just blow the price out of the water :)

Drool

$40,245 Total

$1,000  Tires
$1,000  Exhaust

$1,000  Lip Kit (looks, not $$ track)
  $850  Header

Nice! But aren't STi parts expensive? Well, that would be more of a true STi anyway :)

chulooz 09-19-2013 02:59 AM

$1,000 is not OEM+ coilovers, its junk. Why would you spend $3k on stopping an already light car, but only $1.5k on the cars main highlight, its ride.

I'm pretty sure he know, that's why I was in upper case...like op's first sentence. :D

ZionsWrath 09-19-2013 04:03 AM

The reason people won't take the "why wait, just build your own" is because there is a BIG difference between financing a car and putting out 10k cash on a car that is financed and being up the creek when parts start failing.

Sure on paper you might say hey you can do it all for 5k or something but modifying cars becomes a rabbit hole...

As for my "STi"

Keep OEM suspension, add camber bolt, maybe less than 1 inch lower springs. ~$500
Innovate supercharger when IC comes out ~$5,000
Robispec cooling if it will fit, or some other oil cooler and radiator ~$1,000
Exedy stage 1 clutch ~$500
Cheap 17" wheels and 245 Pilot Super Sports ~$1,500
Front BBK ~$2,000
Gauge + Install ~$500
Dyno Tuning ~$1,500

So there is a BASIC build and it totals $12,000 already and that is installing most of the parts yourself. If you are only on the street you can probably stay OEM suspension and skip the BBK and cooling, but that is still closing in on $10,000

TylerLieberman 09-19-2013 09:35 AM

Exterior:
Upgraded Aero
Small Rear Wing

Interior:
New Bucket Seats (JDM STI Seats)
Different Interior Trim (Gloss black maybe)
Altered Gauge Cluster and Steering Wheel (STI Badges)
STI Push Button Start

Wheels/Brakes/Tires:
17" BBS Wheels
Better/Wider Tires (Maybe 235/45)
STI 4pot/2pot Brakes

Suspension/Chassis:
Stiffer spring rates/struts (1-1.5" overall drop is fine)
Upgraded Bushings
Upgraded Control Arms
Thicker Sway Bars
200lb+ Weight Reduction

Engine/Drivetrain:
Improved Intake Design
Improved Header and Exhuast Design
ECU Changes
Valvetrain/Headwork (rev to 8,000rpm from the get go)
Upgraded clutch and flywheel
Lightweight Driveshaft
Approx. 230-240bhp

Honestly, if you think about it, all Subaru really needs to do is make this:
http://stwot.motortrend.com/files/20...s-1024x722.jpg
Throw on all the optional STI aftermarket parts on a BRZ limited, take off some weight, improve the handling a bit, add some power and call it a day. We're probably never gonna get some sort of F/I standard with the car so instead of pouting over it, focus on something else: weight.

Go from a 200hp, 2800lb car to a 240hp, 2500lb car. Honda S2000 power in a Miata

There are coilovers under $1000.. I didn't go there. Are you sure there's nothing good in the $1500 range? Buddy Club? Cusco? We're not talking adjustable top of the line, just better than stock.

Have you seen the price of the STI coilovers for the Impreza (2.5RS/i, WRX, and STI)?

King Tut 09-19-2013 01:48 PM

Already own my version of an STi, and it wasn't cheap to build:

Sorry, those are all essentially junk on a dyno.

Tarmac Zero's are $1300 and are REALLY good, not junk at all.

How do you know they are really good? The only read way to prove that would be a shock dyno, have you ever seen taramc zeros perform on a shock dyno?

Definitely not, haven't seen them.

I trust Racecomp engineering and their products, based on the KW 3's.

You might know more than me, so I won't try and dispute your thoughts.

ZionsWrath 09-19-2013 05:07 PM

I learned on my last car how difficult it is to dial in suspension, so I'm trying to keep my suspension stock or just mild springs :(

My STI is not exactly price conscious. It's cost me 45 (so far) and I'm not done :bonk:

Sounds like you just about hit the nail on the head with what I plan to do! 18x8.5" F and 18x9.5" R, KW or Öhlins coilovers, different rear spoiler, Vortech S/C, STi Brembos, TOM's tails, and a Chargespeed Bottomline kit. I'm also going to replace the stock seats with Recaros and get some more JPM Coachworks goodies.

Won't take me long to get there. I've got ~$13k in parts after 3 1/2 months and no end in sight! Damn, that just sunk in. I could have my car more than halfway paid off if I just kept it stock :(

Huh, today the thread is in the BRZ section, when it was in the Scion section it was inappropriately placed (imho) hence my comment. Enjoy your Sciobaru.

If there is too much negative camber, how do you plan on bringing it back? LCAs? Adjustable bushings?
