Baby seat in the BRZ!

Okay, so it's a front-facing carseat, not really a baby seat - which most likely won't fit - but I don't think anyone's ever tried this, or have I been able to find any pictures of it. I present:

BRZ by Pelican_Racing, on Flickr

You can see my other pics, and comments, in the Flickr set.

I'm just waiting on the pricing announcement. Dealer was saying they only had 5 cars left, but I'm going to safely assume that's their first allocation and Subaru will make a ton of these cars.

Cheers,
Hong

Nice to know .. now if only someone will come up with a solution
for a BABY seat ... or attempt it ...
I figure it like this ... Baby seat shotgun .. and my lady friend
behind me...

Don't think the car has an airbag defeat switch does it? If not, your plan=fail.

Nice, thanks!

The baby's feet are gonna get smashed when the front passenger uprights the seat.

BigFatFlip 04-03-2012 08:22 PM

Thank you, this is really good to know. I guess the baby stays in the wagon/truck until he's big enough for a to a child/booster seat...

Even though current cars have sensors to control airbag deployment, a baby seat should never go in the front. His plan will also fail unless both he an his lady friend are short.

A plan that will work for normal-sized people:
Driver = him (or his lady friend)
Front passenger = lady friend (or him)
Rear passenger-side = baby
Rear driver-side = empty

I bet for babies it has to be very compact. Sort of like this Porsche: http://shop4.porsche.com/usa/car/chi.../95504480058/#

And I hope to find this booster for out 1-st grader: http://www.vizualid.com/6speed/INBACK01.jpg

Can someone please (briefly) explain what the difference is between front-facing and rear-facing car seats (besides the obvious) and between regular car seats and "baby" car seats...or direct me to the info. Thanks!

It is now recommended to keep children in rear facing seats until age of 2. This is because they don't have the neck muscle strength as older children. In event of a crash, they are safer in a rear seat. Front facing is as posted in this thread and exactly as it sounds.

Infants must be in a rear-facing seat, all the way up until they are age 1 (at a minimum). Rear facing is just safer, especially for babies, who don't have the neck strength to fair well in a rear-end collision. Rear facing seats should never be put in the front seat regardless of whether the airbags can be disabled.

Front facing car "baby" seats are for older babies...really, 1 year and up. Some front facing seats handle children as young as 1 all the way up to 4-5. Front facing "car seats" are most likely what you would think of for a child 4-5 - built for older children but still more supportive than simply a booster seat.

I'm no expert here so others may have more details...

OP - thanks for posting. I for one will be putting one of these in the back for my 2 1/2 year old. I plan on going for this one, depending on whether it will fit or not: http://www.amazon.com/Recaro-Vivo-Hi.../dp/B002NYQYOW

Phaedrus29 04-04-2012 01:40 AM

Thanks for the responses. And I guess the idea is that rear-facing seats take up more room? It's unclear to me why they can't make a rear-facing seat that takes up about the same room as a front one.

Rear facing the kid tends to lie more than sit upright. This helps protect their neck from any potential whip lash. So it is longer in the horizontal axis vs car seat for an older kid is longer in the vertical axis.

Did you even look at the other picture? :sigh:

There is plenty of room with the passenger seat set at comfortable position for me.

I have a Recaro and a Radian seat as well, the Britax is the largest one by far so I know the other two will fit.

It has more to do with bone density/head weight vs muscle, then muscle strength alone. Which means even if you have a very strong kid, my first was picking his head up five hours after birth, you still should wait before turning them around.

But yeah, rear facing takes up a shit ton of room. The baby buckets aren't too bad, but my first kid grew out of that (weight and height limit) at 8 months still four months to go before we could turn him around. My second child grew out of the baby bucket at 6 months and is presently in a rear facing baby seat.

Sportsguy83 04-04-2012 06:58 AM

Thanks for the pics, My wife will be happy :D

ForReal-Someday 04-04-2012 09:42 AM

I was planning on taking out the rear seats altogether and mounting a base for our rear-facing car seat to the seat belt attachment points. Hopefully the little guy doesn't mind holding some track wheels on his lap for the weekend autoX trips.

uspspro 04-04-2012 02:46 PM

I am confident that rear facing will fit fine in the back, without a front passenger (seat scooted far forward).

To me that is acceptable, since if my wife is with me, we would just use her car. The times I would need the baby seat would be if I needed to pick up the (hypothetical at this point) kids on my own.

Fortunate Few 04-04-2012 02:53 PM

Wasnt there a baby seat option on the japanese brz site?

Might be doable if the seat back will lock in the upright position. If it needs to tilt back to lock, it may not work. Ie - car seat fits with front seat folded forwards but can not then lock into position. Problem there would be the potential for the front seat to be slammed rearward into the baby seat (where their head would be) in any kind of impact.

Won't have an answer until someone either brings a rear facing baby seat to the dealer, or wait a few weeks till the first people get their cars.

Btw - a small baby seat like the Combi will probably fit the best in the small space. It is rear or forward facing but doesn't have a detachable base - so positioning the baby into the rear facing seat could be a challenge. I used that seat in my WRX with much success - which for a 4 door has a surprisingly small back seat when trying to install a normal rear facing baby seat.

Quantum 04-04-2012 04:34 PM

We had a rear-facing seat in my WRX wagon. Had to sell it when we had our second child, it really is a small car. Now that both my kids seat front-facing I can consider the BRZ instead of another big sedan/wagon.

A rear-facing seat won't work since the passenger seat does *not* lock the seat angle until it's back on the rail. You could just remove it, but that would mean no seat for the wife alone.

I was going to create a thread but i found this. so i am going to post here and avoid same topic again on new thread.

i recently had a daughter in Dec 2014 and i probably need to carry her with my BRZ occasionally so i am wondering which car seats fits fine. our infant car seat is Chicco keyfit 30 right now but i havent test that out in BRZ yet but i heard that fits in our twins.

I just need to find out more options if i need to buy extra car seats.

irax 02-03-2015 03:55 PM

I have fit forward facing car seat no problem.
