America's most thrilling roads
Saw this on Yahoo! and thought I would share. I've never driven on any of these roads (not even tail of the dragon), but after looking at some pictures and videos, it looks to me that most of them would be a blast to drive on with the fr-s.
Anyone have any experience driving on any of these roads? http://travel.yahoo.com/photos/ameri...434236933.html |
Hm, nothing in my area...surprised "gmr" or Mulholland wasn't present. I guess they aren't as scenic?
|
Does it include the road to the airport to get to Europe or Japan?
|
I need to look at this later on my own computer.
|
Hmmmm.......no roads in the Rockies .... ??

I've done 9 out of 10 and the Dragon & Panoramica in PR are the only 2 worth seeing. Far better drivers roads could have filled the other 8 spots.

There are actually 24 on the list, use the following link then use the next/previous buttons.http://www.mensjournal.com/expert-ad...-sisters-texas

I have been on four of the first ten. None of the second group except perhaps Twisted Sisters really appeal to me because I am more interested in looking at my next apex than I am in looking at the scenery. For that reason I tend to drive a lot on some of the great driving roads in SE Ohio. A group of about a dozen FT86 owners will be heading down there on Oct 19th for a day of driving fun.
I have heard talk of an annual meet for the BRZ/FR-S being organized for the Tail of the Dragon. Many car groups already do that including s2000, Mini, Mazda and Mr2 Spyder among others. The BRZ/FR-S is perfectly suited to the Dragon because it is more like driving a 11 mile autox than it is a road. A small lightweight car is the car to have on that road. Unfortunately, traffic can be heavy, motorcycles and a bicyclist are everywhere, the speed limit has been lowered to 30MPH and said speed limit is heavily enforced during the day time. For that reason, many drivers wait until evening and late night hours to attack it. Every sports car enthusiast should drive the Dragon at least once. |
I have been on a few of those roads, but not in the FRS. Some of those choices seemed to be based more on how scenic they are, but that doesn't always mean thrilling.
The big problem is usually speed limit/congestion on many of these roads. For example, Going to the Sun road in Glacier National Park would be amazing/terrifying/thrilling if you could blast up it as fast as possible, but that would never happen. In fact many National Park roads are amazing, but they all have low speed limits and massive RV's clogging the roads. Personally, I would put the Taconic Parkway in NY, I have been on that in the FRS. It's like a roller coaster and insanely narrow for the traffic you can encounter on it (it is fairly scenic too). In addition, the speed limit says 55mph, but during rush hour I challenge you to find anyone going under 75. |
problem with these articles are, these roads are filled with either bicyclist or motorcycles that rarely let anyone pass because they think they're fast as shit on the corners. There are so many nice roads in Cali that are secluded but they're all in the middle of no where lol.

We have highway 29 on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama. Fantastic!
|
The Dragon is a big speed trap.
|
I've driven 8 & 9 many times in other cars, haven't got the BRZ there yet. But they are both a great experience. Plus the roads leading to that area are just as entertaining...if you want real fun and no speed traps, run them at night. But that requires a little more concentration... ;)

I lived down there for a while. Amazing roads. That's where I broke my FRS in, shifting below 5000 of course. |

I really can't enjoy going to the limits on those super twisty roads. You have to have a certain lack imagination to do so. After driving long enough, you learn to anticipate the possibility of all the things that could be just around the bend. In my case, it has been elk, moose, deer, horses, cattle, porcupine, people, accidents, police scenes, fallen boulders and trees, gravel and mud and drivers in the wrong lane. I just can't suspend my imagination long enough to really take the car to the limits without a clear view ahead.

So #10 is tollway 130 east of austin, and I'm honestly surprised by this.
It seems the only thing the editor took into account was the 85 mph speed limit. Yes, this road is fast. Yes, it is a very well paved road that you can go very fast on. Does that mean it's really that fun. Well, I hadn't done it in the FR-S, but I've driven that road other times and can't see it being fun at all in an FR-S. Unless you planned on going significantly faster than posted speed limits.. Plenty of other great hilly windy roads in Austin |

Skyline Drive (Virginia) is 15 minutes from my house. Pretty, but boring in the FR-S. 35MPH is no fun.
But if you get off the mountain, and drive the winding back roads in Greene/Albemarle/Madison counties - :happyanim: |

I've been on a lot of twisty roads in the 86, but one of my favs is the Corvallis Newport highway, especially during a light rain. mmm

America's most thrilling roads
Twisted Sisters: http://www.mensjournal.com/expert-ad...-sisters-texas
The 3 Sister's drive gets it's name from Ranch Roads 335, 336 and 337. Google Map: http://goo.gl/maps/5f7LX A group of us from the San Antonio, Texas area are doing a run again on October 26th. We'll meet up at the Apple Store in Medina, Texas at 9 AM. More info here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25908 Come join us!! Add your name on the last page of the thread. The 3SIST3RS drive is addicting and many of us have been over a dozen times or more! It is beyond fun...gets your adrenalin going and the roads with the twisties are what our cars are designed for. If you live in Texas, it is a "must drive" opportunity. http://extreme86.smugmug.com/Cars/3S...SC_0093-XL.jpg http://extreme86.smugmug.com/Cars/tw...5c7ad_h-XL.jpg http://extreme86.smugmug.com/Cars/tw...MGP9234-XL.jpg http://extreme86.smugmug.com/Cars/3S...SC_0046-XL.jpg Vids by @TEWwild: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...72&postcount=7 |
I've been on some of those. Not in the FRS. Nachez Trace.... boring for frs. Chreohala Highway, the dragon.
|
I'm near the Kancamagus. It's an ok road, but high traffic most of the year. Most of the road is sweeping curves, except one section the engineers went a little nuts on. A couple sharp curves and a tight hairpin all back to back.

Drop off the Skyline Drive at Swift run gap on to 33 east, take a right on 810 (Dyke Rd) and ride that to Crozet - lots of up/down twisty roads and beautiful scenery - hardly any traffic. Stop & have a beer and lunch at Fardowners or maybe do a beer tasting at Starr Hill brewery. You can get back on the Skyline Rockfish gap entrance via 250 or 64, or not. |
I think every american needs to take one of these two roads... and never come back
