One year after my FR-S

It has been exactly one year to date that I purchased my FR-s MT. I have logged approximately 16k miles on.I have to admit I was in love with this car when I purchased it.Even though am disappointed on the overall vehicle quality,I feel the car was fun to drive and had plenty of power for highway commute.

I have not had any CEL or DI problems and I can honestly say that I flog the FRS more often than not.I am very cautious when it comes to potholes and my rims are flawless. But, i have noticed things aside from the goldfish tail lights or how poorly the paint holds up on the front valence. The exterior body panels including front and rear valence and inner fender wells are loose. It appears subaru utilized expanding plastic pins to secure a lot of the plastic panels. These pins are now worn as I can move my plastics around enough to hear a clunk. The passenger side mirror detent will allow the mirror to move enough that it throws me off and it makes a little clanky too.

The interior panels are no different, they vibrate like crazy and i find my self turning down the bass only to find its already lower than i thought.

I still love the look and feel of the FR-S,but Verses driving this thing another winter,I feel its time to move on.Looking at AWD platforms like the Golf R or Evo X.

Just thought I would share my personal experience with everyone considering my FRS did not suffer any issues other than a damp tailight. It was a great little car, just built like they did not give a ****

Not normally a poster but learned a lot on these boards, thanks

So you found out you like AWD because winter?

Have you thought about winter tires? Honestly in most ordinary driving winter situations you'll just as like to crash as you will in AWD car. AWD car in the winter with all season tires isn't as great as we are all led to believe. I've had my own experience in 4X4 vehicles and the Audi Quattro system.

BTW, EVO has horrible paint as well. I don't know about rattles but those paint jobs are just as bad this car.

But oh well, nice seeing you on the forum. Bye.

Did you try getting snow tires?

Yea,last year. Not to mention disabling the auto down feature as the windows are stuck if it even frosts. Its definitely more summer than winter car.

Which snow tires, out of curiosity? What were you finding to be the problem with the car in the winter with snow tires?

thebus 09-17-2013 08:54 PM

Sad to see it go, I don't plan on driving it in winter I have a LC for that, but my god the doors rattle like all heck and I'm only at 2232, my fj was off roaded and it did not rattle this much :( just don't forget awd will aid in the none sliding but you will still have it there! 4x4 is definitely great for going up hills and deeper snow but turns still have to watch out :happy0180:

FRyeS 09-17-2013 09:00 PM

AWD is more dangerous because it inspires false confidence. Just sayin'

Thanks for your review ....;)

19000 miles and just over a year

Not much rattles, maybe the rear deck and with radio bass but thats it

tail lights, yes

bumper paint chips, yes

Don't let the door hit you on the way out

This seems a bit uncalled for and very unfriendly, I didn't know this was turning into an elitist forum, I sure hope not.

Didn't you get the memo?

You don't know jack shit in till you have over 20,000 miles, numerous auto x days and heavy wheel modifications.

Elitist? Hardly. OP says the car was fun but he wants something with a better build quality, although he hasn't had any mechanical faults.

I'm glad he had fun but I am not too concerned with a member of the community selling their car because it has a few arbitrary rattles or perceived build quality issues.

Thanks buddy me too! Car is nice so hopefully won't take too long to sell. Really wanting a 6mt firestorm red frs :)

Kelbyat07 09-18-2013 09:11 PM

I still drive hard in the winter. You can put bags of sand in your trunk if you want.

Steve 09-18-2013 09:17 PM

I look forward to the winter with this car, unlimited drifting when it snows, with a fraction of the wear and tear, if any at all. Very controllable when I need it to be, with winter tires.

wbradley 09-18-2013 09:30 PM

Well at least if the OP switches cars his name will be true compared to most on this forum.

I have had 3 taillights swapped, tons of crickets with no offer to fix, paint chips galore, a few small scratcbes (my fault), slightly folded window rubber...but Iove this car!

It has TONS of character flaws and all. Perhaps the Subaru characteristics arent what some Toyota customers expectected.

What you mean a car that doesn't have fogged taillights, tons of crickets, or rattles everywhere? Nah I wasn't expecting it at all.

gily25 09-18-2013 11:15 PM

Paint and build quality on our Lancer is lower quality than the BRZ, FYI.

Not really sure why we need these kinds of threads...reminds me of chicks who want to play games...you don't like the car then go...there are plenty of car owners (any make model) who trade cars after 18 months...I don't get it but hey whatever your money. *2 cents*

Nor did I want to come across as being spiteful or attempt to deter anyone from considering an FRS.It's an awesome car and still leaves a grin on my face.Im new to Scion/Subaru,looks like some of it should have been expected by the commentary.oh well.

raven1231 09-19-2013 06:44 PM

who cares? He enjoyed the car but wants to move on. No need to flame him for it. By the way my EVO is a 2005 and the paint is immaculate.

Ive had my car for a year and a half, and I have not experienced any of these except...................................The paint. I agree.

Stunned at the number of posters on this forum who hate their cars. Never run into any other online car community quite like it.

My wife's got one - I have the truck - and that little car is a flat-out blast. And the price? You gotta be kidding me. Sleeper sports car of the century.

Count me as one satisfied customer.

Anthony 09-21-2013 12:33 AM

What is snow?

BRZPDX 09-21-2013 12:49 PM

We're going to see more people fall off from the honey moon stage and dump these cars. They are the best kind of consumers with their never ending quest to find the perfect car, getting distracted to other models, feeling the buyers remorse rest of their lives. Its what keeps the economy going!

I will fall into this category when the new Supra comes out I suppose.

thill 09-21-2013 02:54 PM

I think the problem you will find with this car is that there is going to be a percentage of drivers who only bought it based on all the over the top reviews of the car and all the hype. Some of them did not even test drive the car before they bought it, nor did they drive many of the competition. I love my BRZ. But I did not buy all the hype, and I drove everything out there under the sun. I knew what I was getting, flaws and all.

Honestly, this is the third RWD sports car I have owned in the snow, and snow tires and adjusting your driving habits have always worked for me. I have more confidence driving my BRZ with dedicated snow tires than I do driving our FWD minivan that has all weather tires, and my wife agrees as well.

As for build quality, I have had zero complaints but have not owned the car a year yet. I added some sound deadening material for the doors and trunk and it really seemed to help with noise. I have zero rattles. I added a clear bra to the front bumper, hood, and mirrors and have not had issues with paint chips.

At the end of the day, the car is a pretty inexpensive sports car. I don't expect it to not have flaws, and I deal with them as they pop up.

I will say that trading a Toyota/Subaru for a VW is not going to help with reliability. Having owned two VW's, good luck with that.

forzajuve 09-21-2013 02:57 PM

Interesting result with your experience. I am in my 6 month of owning the car and I haven't notice any of these issues. I'll be curious to see what happens in the following 6....

Rattles bother you but youre considering a mitsu, and reliability concerns you but youre looking at a VW. God bless.
