Cruise Control Max of 69mph?

So yeah, trying to understand, has anyone been able to actually put their cruise control setting to anything higher than 69mph?

I have a manual and some parts of our highways are 75mph, never really go that ways, but did a week or so back, and noticed i cannot set it for anything over 69mph? Is there a limiter or something?

I've been able to set it to 80 something

Something is wrong with your car, or you're not in the top gear. I was able to set 90MPH on a drive back from WY last weekend.

strat61caster 09-16-2013 11:56 AM

I regularly set mine to about 75.

Have you tried not giggling maniacally as you attempt to increase your speed? Might help. Also the manual, sometimes it's something silly that you're overlooking as you drive.

infinite012 09-16-2013 12:05 PM

I set mine daily to 75+ mph.

Hmm, didnt think about the top gear thing, maybe i was in 5th or something? I am pretty sure i wasnt, as i was on a highway driving 75 for like 20 miles, so... I will try it again soon, been raining like crazy here, so have not drove it since that day. And really around the city, 65 is top speed, so never really tried around town.

I will probably drive it tomorrow and test again.

Stierzy34 09-16-2013 12:08 PM

Maybe your car just likes 69 ;)

Put it this way: I can set cruise control in every gear from 3 thru 6. I think in some gears there is a rev limit to what speed you can set cruise control to, and this is not mentioned specifically in the manual.

I had to do this because I was driving through some towns with wide open roads, and speed limit of 35 or lower.

husker741 09-16-2013 12:11 PM

I set it at 88mph. Miraculously, I ended up in a different period of time.

DoomsdayJesus 09-16-2013 12:16 PM

I definitely noticed there's a top limiter. I haven't been able to set it above 85, or maybe 80. I have noticed I can set it at 80 and push it a little higher with the accel switch, though.

G_Ride 09-16-2013 12:19 PM

I haven't had issues with my cruise control. I've only tried setting it to 80 at the highest.

dbrandt01 09-16-2013 02:30 PM

I'll chime in as well, I just set it at 77mph a couple hours ago.

Twin#2 09-16-2013 02:57 PM

I set mine to 70-75 everyday

WolfpackS2k 09-16-2013 03:15 PM

I've read in articles that the cruise control cannot be engaged above 90 mph, but I haven't checked.

The highest I've set my cruise control is 83 mph.

That sounds believable to me - my 2007 Outback has that limitation.

Gosh, what braggadocios speeders we have on this thread.
I often set mine at 25mph since I must go thru several school zones depending upon which direction I take to get out of the neighborhood and I KNOW the area is being monitored at the beginning of school year.

I bet no one can get lower than that!

Cruise control limbo, anyone?

I can set mine above 69 mph without issues.

Bg8780 09-16-2013 04:05 PM

I've been able to set mine to 93 if I remember correctly. It could have been 90. I was just playing around with it and just curious. I could hold the toggle up and the car would accellerate past 93 but once I let go of the toggle it would settle right back down to 93.

^The above poster is correct. I believe the number is 90 or 91 mph.

Actually you can get it down to 23 in my experience but it doesn't like to engage below 25 unless conditions are just right in my experience.

6th gear at 35 mph is my favorite, thing shows ~50 mpg on the instant gauge although it sounds like a diesel truck.

448hpsti 09-16-2013 04:18 PM

Shuts off @93ish

Bg8780 09-16-2013 09:36 PM

Well, I think we're all in agreement? The counting shall be 93. No more, no less. 95 is right out!

crash.1340 09-16-2013 09:56 PM

I think it's funny that our cars won't allow cruise to be set past 90 MPH whereas the Chrysler 300C SRT-8's computers will allow you to set cruise at 170. A couple of their engineers took one out on the Autobahn and realized you couldn't, so they conjured up a voluntary recall that involved "transmission recalibration" just so the owners could set cruise to 170 if need be.

That's what I hear anyway.

Insane.

On my Outback, I discovered the 90mph limitation on I-15 in Utah, which has an 80mph limit. 90 really isn't outrageous there. Even here in CO, interstates run at 80 or more frequently, with a 75mph limit.

I usually set mine at 75-80 when on the highway.

Once the number ninety three, being the ninety third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Cruise Control of Japan towards thou highway, who being void of law enforcement, shall snuff it. Amen.

I had my Tiburon's cruise control set at 130mph for about 30 minutes, uninterrupted, one time. Take that.

ashtray 09-18-2013 04:45 AM

What's cruise control?! (Seriously, mine could be completely broken and I wouldn't know about it for years.). Ok, it's good on the highway when you don't want to worry about getting caught speeding - just set it 3-4 above the limit and let it cruise - but usually I try to be second fastest on the highway, with varying speeds, so cruise doesn't do much for me except probably get me a speeding ticket.

In town? Just leave it in the wrong gear - ie, too high so you can't accelerate fast or too low so your rev to 6,000 rpm if you're above the limit. You'll know either way. Oh, and these cars have a DIGITAL READOUT of your speed, so it's easy to glance and know exactly how fast you're going.

As for not being able to set it above 90 - probably a safety feature so if you fall asleep with the cruise control on, you're "only" crashing at 90 max, instead of possibly 130 or something. At triple digits you should be pretty focused on your driving anyways, including monitoring your speed - but I understand the leg fatigue that can set in after many hours on the road. (I drove 500 mile trips twice a month for 6 years on the east coast - none of my cars had cruise control, or even AC for that matter. One car did have a tape player - my pickup I had a portable radio next to my seat for tunes.)

Guff 09-18-2013 05:05 AM

The cruise control stops at 4k RPM, and in sixth gear, that means about 93 mph.

I don't remember if the cruise control is RPM limited in every gear, but I'm fairly certain it is. Which is probably why the OP could not exceed 69 mph, as fifth gear at 4k RPM is likely around that speed.

BRZfan 09-18-2013 07:56 AM

You may want to travel more and see the Unites States if you haven't already. Ever drive thru:
North Dakota and Montana on I 94 ? How about
South Dakota and Minnesota? 0n I-90 ? or
I-80 thru Nebraska and Iowa ?
Then there's Texas as well as many other opportunities to use cruise control on 400 to 700 mile daily drives.
Sure, one can fall asleep, cruise control or not, but it is certainly less fatiguing. At least that is what I have found and with motorcycling as well.

Sound like some great stretches of roadway! You've convinced me - forget the canyon and ocean side roads of Southern California - I want to drive through Nebraska!

I think you have missed the point at the expense of saying too much.

I have ridden and driven the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) as well as many other parts of northern and southern California canyonways numerous times but rarely with cruise control, the subject at hand.

Nah - I got ya. I'd definitely need cruise control if driving through a flat boring state. Just responding to the "you need to get out more" - no thanks. ;)

What the damn!? That's... That's... It's just so typical of the way modern cars are made. Sure I will probably never have a chance to set cruise on an unlimited speed road, but I still want the capability just in case!

As a teen, I dialed my E30's cruise control up to 120mph and had a most memorable jaunt through the mountains of North Carolina.

Nowadays you probably get sent to a maximum security prison for such things. :bonk:
