ej25 compatibility with our transmission

I know its a huge longshot, and an incredibly stupid question.

But would they mate without a custom bellhousing?

I know someone selling a jdm ej25 ver 7 for a REALLY good price so I figured Id ask.

Any help is appreciated!

nix 09-12-2013 08:03 PM

nope

Figured as much. If I buy it Ill just look into making a custom bell housing.

I'm still kinda surprised with all the swaps going on no one has done a proper street EJ build here yet. It would be a great project.

fa5tco 09-12-2013 08:29 PM

Yeah I figure it would be a fun route to go and still stay with its roots haha!

Because the EJ engine is inferior in almost every way compared to the FA20?

Captain Insano 09-12-2013 11:15 PM

The ej207 is not inferior from a durability perspective.

you cant really say it is or it isnt the fa20 hasnt seen 5/10 yrs of life yet.

Captain Insano 09-13-2013 02:22 AM

Well, I could easily say the same thing about post #6.

the fa20 is a time bomb the moment you put a turbo kit on it. Its just a matter of time before they pop

I can source a complete ej25 for less than most turbo kits and make reliable 350-400 hp and more torque than a boosted fa20 would make.

The only thing the fa20 is better at is better at is fuel efficiency

Source?

The FA20 is better in pretty much every aspect than an EJ aside from the fact that its an open deck.

nix 09-13-2013 10:45 AM

I was more talking about how cheap and proven street or even full comp EJ builds are. I saw a few teams have run them for drift or drag comps.

Having had a 2011 WRX and being on Nasioc, its pretty safe to say there have been many more threads about blown motors stock on those cars than these.

Given those motors have been around the US for 9 more years I would see how that makes sense, regardless of engine reliability.

The updated engine came out in 08. And those were failing within the first year for most. We have passed the first year of production with this engine and I don't see the same trends.

Well regardless i'm pretty happy with that fact

Luckily subaru seems to be taking notes of things they do wrong.

I am also perfectly fine with logging into the forums and not seeing a registry full of engine failures on this site.

Blown ringlands, IIRC, were largely a tune issue with the STI I thought, rather than a true "engine" issue.

what are you talking about sir? the ej series has seen so many "time bombs" as you say then the fa20, once a wrx or sti gets sold its only a matter of time when the customer brings it back becuase it blew up. lol.

you could say its a tune issue due to the fact that your are no longer having a complete "stock" ecu/engine. but it's the engine that CANT handle it blown ringlands is a weak piston and/or a dumb tuner lol. either way i dont think we should really be having a **** battle between ej and fa/fb engines there both from subaru, different generations. i think if convincing need to be made, go to youtube and watch crawford performance video of the 500lb of torque brz, crawford says it himself, that the fa20 is better in every way compared to the ej series.

Plenty of stock engines blew, it was a problem with the tune and the damage done to the engine WHILE on the stock tune. That's why every major Subaru tuner suggests reflashing the car to a "Stage 1" tune...lots of timing and AFR issues around peak boost with the stock tune.

Thats true, but it still shows that the ringlands were weak. And the discussions were always going on about the tunes. Where you take a risk tuning it and losing your warranty or not tuning it and the engine blows up. :barf:

I believe I heard something to the affect of given the turbo placement next to one of the cylinders it caused excess heat and lead to engine problems.

The problem was bad tune, which caused detonation, caused heat/excessive wear on the cylinders. Hence the ringland failure. However I'm sure weak ringlands was also to blame (speculation from what I read)

youre comparing a forged and blue printed crawford motor with a stock ej motor. Congrats. Rocket science wins. :bellyroll:

xwd 09-13-2013 08:27 PM

You mentioned a "JDM EJ25 V7" which doesn't really exist to begin with.

The JDM EJ207s still suffered from issues like spun bearings, they aren't bulletproof motors, albeit more stout than the US versions. I ran a EJ257/EJ207 combo in a race car some years ago. The EJ255/EJ257 is not really a very stout stock bottom end and very prone to issues with any sort of detonation, I went through one ringland incident and ended up building the next block with better internals. That's not exactly cheap. Even people with moderate power levels have built EJ257s. Then you get things like cracked oil pickups, etc.

The FA20 is just a more modern engine with better heads, direct injection, etc. The FA20 will make more reliable power running way less boost than a EJ engine, that's been shown quite a few times already. An AVO kit with a slightly larger impeller makes close to 300whp on pump gas at 10psi... As for longevity, we are approaching a year and a lot of mileage for some folks running FI at this point. I've only read about a few truly catastrophic failures and a couple were due to wastegate/boost issues where cars way overboosted.

If that's the synopsis you got from my post, then sir you are in fact a "rocket scientist". Congrats.
