My mom hates import culture?

Ever since I was a little kid, I think my mom has always hated import culture. When I was 8, I remembered I bought my first car magazine and she ripped out all of the pages with models in them. Almost half the magazine was gone :mad0260:

Well, in September, I took my parents and my brother to a DMCC event (Canada's drifting sanctioning body) and it was awesome. It was the first event I have ever been to with cool cars, drifting and such. I had such a great time. My mom, however didn't have a good time. We went to buy T-shirts, and there were the models there. Apparently there was a model there who didn't wear underwear and when the wind blew you could see her vagina and everything. (I didn't see shit. Some family they are!). Buying the T-shirt qualified us for a ride along, which we didn't win but she said she wouldn't let me take it because she thought the drivers would be on drugs and stuff. Well now she hates anything related to import cars and thinks all people who like cars are pimps, drug dealers, or prostitutes. It was a good first experience, but I don't want it to be my last. Can someone help me convince my mom the import car community isn't a bunch of drug dealing scumbags?

Live with it, bide your time. I assume your still living with your parents. Once your on your own it won't matter what your parents think, or at least not as much. As you get older you'll probably even find yourself agreeing with them.

TO OP: Moms hate on things they don't see that benefits their kids in a conventional sense. My mom was the same way but not that extreme because I didn't give a care & did what see wanted me to which was go to school & get good grades.

Buying a car doesn't have to mean becoming obsessed with "import culture". Buy a car, do what you do, and create your own "culture" around you. Trust me, you can waste all your time living in some imaginary world and going to these shows, buying magazines (which is probably what your parents are being naggy parents about), or you can get whatever car you like, and go live a real life out there. That's what really cool people do, as opposed to people trying to be cool. That's part of growing up. And if you have to save up for your dream car, then set a goal, get a job and start saving. Create your own realities, you don't have to emulate some culture that you see only peripherally, that has a perception of "being cool". Define yourself genuinely and people including your parents will begin to respect you.

KaliKev 03-31-2012 11:39 PM

Seriously?

blu_ 03-31-2012 11:54 PM

I've never been a big fan of the "import scene" either. Probably most car scenes really. I think the one club event where I really enjoyed the people was an Alpha club. In general these events, sanctioned or unsanctioned always seemed very image based IMO.

Shes doing you a favor drifting is figure skating for guys who are too ashamed to admit they like figure skating.

Seriously you should watch figure skating... The chicks look good, wear skimpy outfits, and actually have talent.

My mom broke my Live: Throwing Copper CD 20 years ago because she thought it would corrupt me. Wonder what she would have done if I brought her to a car event and showed her some va ja jays.

I'm not obsessed with import culture, the thing is I enjoy reading the magazines although they do get repetative after awhile. It's something to do when boared. The problem is, I find the events fun. It might be because i'm not around preformance cars EVER but I thought it was awesome to be around so many cool cars. Even in the parking lots there were skylines and supras and rediculous S13s. It was actually the second time I have ever seen a Supra in real life EVER. The first time was on the highway when I was 5. I remember it clearly. Sad, I know.

What's wrong with drifting? It was fun to watch and all of the people there except my mom liekd the drifting. Why does an automotive sport have to be a contest of speed for it too be appreciated? It is basically figure skating with cars, but what's wrong with that?

I don't know about your mom... But mine would probably yell out: "hallelujah it's a miracle!"

But that might only be because she's totally blind.

Might be because her sense of smell is better than yours and she can catch the vanilla perfume a mile away. :D

All joking aside... OP sounds like a young person dealing with the growing pains of having a protective parent. We've all known someone in that position. You just gotta be patient and understand she means well, but she might not always be right.

There is nothing wrong with drifting, it takes amazing skill to be successful at it.

But if you want your Mom's approval to look at scantily clad hot chicks then figure skating is your only choice.

Female anatomy 101: vagina != vulva. This protip may help you with the wimmens someday. ;)

For one, girls and vehicles just seem to go together. Not just import culture. Look at hot rods, motorcycles.. almost anything with wheels and an engine. I find the big flashy meets boring most of the time though. I went to HIN one year when I was 16 and that was it. Most of the vehicle owners were arrogant or assholes, or both. I enjoy normal auto shows and small local meets where people aren't being d-bags. More sense of community, and less of "OMG BEWBS." I'd have way more fun at Cars & Coffee where I can chill and talk to someone about his new Lambo/Ferrari/Porshe/etc than something like HIN or NOPI.

If you are hell bent on convincing your mom to support your fascination with cars...

1.) you already failed

2.) try looking for more positive sides of the sport/scene to involve her in/expose her to, those cars shows and drift events are outdoor daylight hour raves, bad music, stupid crowds and skanks are not gonna get mom's :thumbs up:

try finding drivers who support charities or drifting for jesus or some shit, you have to realize that your mom hates your music and thinks you are going to hell, if you want to do what you like, convince her YOUR motives are good, and since i assume your mom is a female, don't try explaining car things to her....just DON't

- Lol

- This guy is right on the money.

It's probably best you try to ease you parents (mother) into your interests in anther way.
My parents didn't care, but respected my interests even if it was the import scene as well. At 15 I just wanted learn what the hell kind of crazy mods people were doing to their cars and of course check out the models. I didn't see any reason to convert them to like cars, so just do what you like man and not worry about the rest.

Just fyi, you'll never win an argument with a woman (sisters, friends, MOM especially, etc); no matter how logical you are.

To respond to the OP, sounds like you've got an extremely conserative mother or at least one which is very controlling. I'd love to know how old you are just so we sort of know where your coming from.

To make a long story short, you're going to have to find out why she's so against you even being interested in this stuff and why she has such strong feelings. It seems strange to me that she wouldn't even let you do a ride a long even if you won the prize. Why not? Because the driver is on drugs? What kind of logic is that? Driving Sideways = on Drugs???

It sounds to me like she has some major concerns with you somehow being corrupted by the import/drifting community. Was there a smell of weed in the air as you we're walking around? What triggered this reaction?

It's not like the drifters are sitting in their cars after doing a run and taking HUGE bong hits like Michael Phelps!!

Hey! Maybe you should tell her you want to take up swimming!!! Girls in bathing suits!! Oh yeah, and the bong/drugs!! :party0030:

I totally forgot about competitive swimming. Which is sad because I used to swim competitively. Well I wasn't actually competitive, I was just there so that no one else would have to come in last.

Yeah, a mom is not going to think about the fine tuning and engineering of the cars or skill of the drivers; she's going to notice the dope-heads, hard music, smell of alcohol, and scantly dressed show girls. To be honest, it's not a good atmosphere IMO and from my experience. A lot of people are there for the party; not the cars.

GrimmSpeed 04-03-2012 09:46 PM

I seriously need to start hanging out at the car hangout spots you guys chill out. I'm use to no girls, bunch of car nerds(myself of included), and freezing cold weather lol
